80% chance this season of Alias will be its last!

kind of sucks,

"
The fifth season of the hit ABC spy drama "Alias" premieres Thursday September 29th, and in a recent talk with TV Guide, ABC president Steve McPherson revealed that "it's 80 percent likely that this will be the show's last season" and despite her pregnancy Jennifer Garner will appear in every episode - even if that means producing fewer episodes. The maternity leave will result in a longer-than-usual winter hiatus (end of November through til March)"

spoilers here http://www.darkhorizons.com/news05/050804f.php

Sad news i was hoping it would go for a few more years, i dont want the last season dealing with her being pregnet

I guess this is good news imo. I was thinking of not watching Alias this season, but if this is the last season, I might as well see it through to the end.

Didn't click on the link because I don't really want to see spoilers, but did they give any more information why it's "80%" sure it's gone?

I guess if Garner or any of the main cast wants to leave, they should end it, but they didn't give any indication of that in the article...

This is also good news in my opinion. The quality of the shows are going down with each season. I'm quickly losing interest and they need to end the series in a high note.

for the lazy, here are teh spoilers for this season
Spoiler:
So what's in store for the fifth season? ABC has released an official synopsis: "After they [Sydney and Vaughn] both survive the car crash, she learns that the man she has known as Michael Vaughn is under investigation and suspected of being a double agent. She questions whether their business and personal relationship over the years had all been a lie. When Sydney discovers that she is pregnant with Vaughn's baby, she is determined to uncover the truth about him.

Meanwhile, because of Jack's past betrayal by Irina, he begins to worry that his daughter may suffer the same fate as he did. He will also have to deal with the fact that he will soon become a grandfather - while still learning how to be a dad. Sloane will have to do some soul-searching of his own, as he makes an unholy alliance in his desperate fight to find a cure for Nadia - who is still in a coma. New agents will be introduced and a nefarious organization will come to light in Sydney's life as she fights to protect her unborn child -- all the while traveling incognito, outsmarting the bad guys and keeping the world safe."

Anemic ratings and creatively-bankrupt scripts?

Seriously, it doesn't say, but I imagine the reason is ratings. The viewership for this show has always been mediocre, despite advertising the crap out of it and moving after the powerhouse that is Lost.

I think this show jumped the shark with the first mention of Rambaldi. I've never understood its appeal.

I love Rambaldi and wish that there was more of a coherent storyline that deals with it.

And for those of you who don't know, the following is a major spoiler for the upcoming season (if true, of course):

Spoiler:
Michael Vartan is out. This was rumoured for a while and basically denied. This is being reported in a number of places now though.

From eonline:

Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow... Heartbroken. Shell-shocked. And just, well, sad. I've never approached a column feeling quite like this, which explains why I rewrote this paragraph nine times before I realized there's no easy way to say:

Someone is leaving Alias. A main, integral character.

It's happening early in the season. And many of you will be devastated.

Now, I'm sure some of you will hate me for this, but I'm not going to name this person. For the sake of the fans (and you know I'm the biggest) and for the sake of those who work so hard on this show, I can't bring myself to ruin what is sure to be a fantastic, mind-blowing twist--the very reason we so love Alias in the first place.

To this end, I've actually sat on this for a while now, and I planned on keeping it a secret. So, why am I opening my big fat yapper now? Because, over the past few days, it's become evident the word is out. Not only has my trusty Batphone sirened five times from different sources telling me the exact same news about this actor's departure, I know reporters at weekly magazines who are thisclose to breaking it.

It's coming.

That said, as the show's biggest cheerleader and the first card-carrying member of Aliasaholics Anonymous, I feel compelled to prep you with an early (and hopefully, helpful) forewarning, along with a request to keep in mind two things when you do hear the news.

Leaving by Choice: Whatever salacious spin these mags may put on this person's exit, the truth is, this AWOL Alias star is leaving of his/her own will. So, let's try to keep the bitter rage to a minimum, mmm-kay?

However, Kristin updated her board shortly after contradicting how she ended her story with this:

Spoiler:
Just had a long chat with a trusted Alias source who gave me a different take on the situation with the AWOLAS (AWOL Alias star).

According to this source, this departure actually may not have been at this person's request. I'm told s/he was informed s/he would be leaving the show for creative reasons ... that the character had run its course.

I find that, um, shocking, if true.

Given the direction the show was taking, I am kind of happy. Better to have it go off the air when it knows it's outstaying its welcome than staying for way longer than it should.

Certainly interesting stuff. I have been wondering which show to watch at that time period this year since every network has put something good up against each other on Thursdays. Smallville, Alias,The OC. Tivo only records 2 and Thursday is Gym night. What to do, what to do.

Very well put. And I agree 100%.

Last season was a bore.

What a fitting end for a positively crappy show.

Although, to be fair, I really liked the first two seasons.

Actually...
Spoiler:
No. Greg Grunberg is out, by his own choice because he feels his character has run it's course creatively. He wants to go back to doing comedy.

Spoiler:
Yes Grunberg is out and he has gone public with this and it is of his own choosing. Vartan is out as well, early in the season, but not of his own choosing.

Spoiler:
actually, you're article specifically DOES NOT name anybody so I fail to see how you can be so certain it is Vartan since as you also pointed out, that particular rumour has been outright denied. For all we know it could be sloane, or far more likely: Dixon since they haven't figured out what to do with him since "Phase One"

Spoiler:
The article I posted didn't mention any names, but there are a number that do. Eonline has an article from Ted Casablanca specifically mentioning Vartan.

Another thing:

Spoiler:
One of the clues given on the site said that the actor was "broadsided", no doubt a reference to the end of the season

it's better this way - otherwise fans will be saying things like "Buffy was great except for the 7th season" or "x-files was great except for the 9th season"

Alias started out great, then just kept getting worse and worse. I watched season 3 on fast forward, and quit even bothering to Tivo it by season 4. Not gonna miss it, but it did have its day.

season 3 was pretty good to me, season four was okay in the beginning but got good as it went, some people quiting or not even bothering to watch it, are acting like it was the worst show ever. I think if they got back to what they were doing in season one or two, dealing with her being an agent and dealing with her friends i think this show has a few years to go.

I've been meaning to get this out for a while.

What was so bad about season 3 (haven't yet seen season 4)

I actually really enjoyed season 3. It entertained me a whole lot more than season 1, when I almost gave up on the show. About 10 episodes in, and nothing had really picked up yet. However, I stuck it through, season one got better by the end, season 2 rocked, and season 3 was quite decent.

Sure season 3 got a bit confusing, and the stuff with Rambaldi was kind of out there. I didn't have any idea what was going on throughout the middle episodes, but by the end, I'd mark it down as a decent season

This is fine news to me, I have been losing interest in the show ever since last seasons bore fest, glad to see it going out "on top" LOL

Thursdays is a log jam for me, Smallville, Survivor, Alias, The Donald, so I will be skipping Alias and just renting it when it hits DVD.

I hope Weiss gets to finally bang Naudia

I don't think it was the worst show ever... just that it was really tight, well-written, and *fun* to watch for two seasons. Then it just fell off a cliff. In some ways, it's worse than being a bad show. I could ignore a bad show. But a show that started out great and then instantly went from great to mediocre is painful and sad.

I agree if they got back to what they were doing in season one or two things would definitely be looking up... unfortunately, they've had two years to do this, and have shown zero sign that they're going to. And the leaked spoilers about Season 5 show that they are moving even further away.
