I had the pleasure of meeting him on two occasions and at each event he was just the nicest and most genuine person you'd ever want to meet. It's no surprise that "Scotty" has always been my absolute favorite Trek character.

I too, was one of the lucky ones who got to meet Jimmy on a number of seperate occasions...he was as outgoing and nice as others here have already posted. Just a great guy.
We all knew this was coming (he stopped making public appearances about a year or more ago), but it's still sad to hear.

Jimmy really was a hero...
At 19, James escaped the turmoil at home by joining the Canadian army, becoming a lieutenant in artillery. He was among the Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. "The sea was rough," he recalled. "We were more afraid of drowning than the Germans."
The Canadians crossed a minefield laid for tanks; the soldiers weren't heavy enough to detonate the bombs. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: one that took off his middle right finger (he managed to hide the missing finger on screen), four in his leg and one in the chest. Fortunately the chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case.
Once again, thanks for the memories and the sacrifice in WWII

The thing I liked best about Doohan is that when he went to a Star Trek convention, he played to the crowd. He knew that he was there for Star Trek fans, and he went as "Scotty". He would answer questions about warp engines and mechanics and he just generally had a blast playing it up.
Meanwhile Shatner would say "I don't really want to talk Star Trek. Let's talk about horses", Nimoy would say "I would like to talk about real world events..", Nichols would talk about Blacks in hollywood. Keonig and Takei would also talk trek but not with the same fun as Doohan.
I still think Takei is the most friendly of the cast. I've at one point or another met them all and George was the only one who treated me more like a person than just another fan.
