Rockstar: INXS Discussion thread
So I'm checking this out as I'm curious to see just who INXS will pick. I'm a fan of their work and I personally don't see how they could ever replace Michael but I'm interested in the concept. Plus, it seems like since it's about rock music, most of the performances will be of rock songs (with possibly a healthy dose of INXS tunes too) it should be interesting.

There were a few people I was pretty impressed with, a few that had me scratching my head as to why on earth they were there.
It'll be interesting to see who goes and what the rationale for it is.

Ty Taylor is one hell of a nice guy. I've met him on a few occasions and I wish him the best.
And he's probably the only reason why I'm watching this show, because I couldn't give a flying cluck about INXS.

I'm suprised you guys are watching this show even though you don't like INXS. I'm just the other way I guess, I've enjoyed INXS' music over the years and am wanting to see who of this group can do it. It's really hard to judge at this point though unless they do incredibly well or incredibly poorly at singing other band's songs.
As for all the Ty Taylor love, he was very good but I'm not sure I thought he was the best.
There was something that I can't quite pinpoint that just wasn't working for me during his rendition of "Cult of Personality". I will say though that he was probably top 3.
since it's obvious that some of the viewers don't really give a crap about the band, do you think the contestants do or do you think they just see it as a ticket to fame? I'm hoping this will be fleshed out in later episodes where we will also hopefully see them doing renditions of INXS songs.
Edit-Forgot to add, I completely agree with their choice for who to kick off this week.

"I love/miss my Daaaddy" eeeeeek. Bring on the cheese.
Despite running into that scary campfire stuff, I found the show interesting. Yeah, as Cardiff mentioned, it has a lot to do with this band. I'm not a fan of their music post "Kick", but I adore their first few albums, so it's simply interesting for me to see INXS. The other stuff is icing.
I liked the first girl the best.

There's something about Ty's personality that didn't work for me, but at times, he's electrifying on stage, but I wasn't all that impressed with his phrasing on his song.
Brandon was good, definitely a larger than life presence.
JD was just a horny guy on stage. I LOL'd at his "oh no he did not just do that" moves.
Will's voice is too weak, but women do like him, reminded me of Chris O'Donnell.
Jordis might be too young to do the job.
Heather was too funky, can't see her fronting this band.
Suzie's voice wasn't that special for someone who forgot the lyrics.
Dana was a mess vocally.
Daphna was a little too weird to be fronting this band.
Mig wasn't that impressive.
Neal was a little spooky channelling Mick Jagger.
Deanna has a strong voice, but will it mesh with INXS's sound?
Jessica was okay, probably relied a little too much on her lack of wardrobe.
Tara's voice was too low to listen to easily for rock songs.
Marty's performance bordered on rock star karaoke.
I'll keep tuning in for the energy of the performance, should be fun to watch.

you could tell some of these guys were the "easy" vote offs. there wouldn't be much of a show if they had started with only the 5 best.

I'm a fan of Mig's, but his song choice tonight was completely terrible.
Ty, Brandon, and Neal all did damn well on the first night.
JD was decent, but as Pat said, his moves were hilarious.
Daphna and Tara are the only two females on the show who might make it to the final few. And on that note, John Entwistle and Keith Moon were rolling in their graves after Jordis' raping of "Baba O'Riley."
And everyone else was awful or mediocre.

Nothing really happened past them looking at the songs. I thought this was pretty good. I also think that half the singers were better than Bo Bice. I think Ty is a nice guy even though I haven't met him. The problem is that he comes off a bit fake. I doubt that he is fake, its just a little too much. I did like his performance. I think Jordis had the most stage presensce. It was like she belonged up there.

Agreed. She did great and I love the original. I personally don't want to hear someone sound exactly like the original because this isn't karaoke.

show looks like it could be ok, but I am getting a little tired of having to follow the backstory of these characters...
Tough to evaluate the singers on 15-30 seconds snippets..

I thought the show was fantastic and most of the contestants have incredible voices. I thought the remaining INXS guys were class acts (first saw 'em in concert in 1986) as was Navarro. I think the show has great potential and to me beats American Idol hands down.

Just a reminder that there is a new episode on tonight and tomorrow night too.
It'll be interesting to see them have to "choose" a song out of a small number of songs. This will hopefully show who actually has vocal range and who's just a great mimic.
I'm not suprised this show didn't do well last night, it doesn't have the appeal to the masses that American Idol does (though I personally can't stand that show). Let's face it, most people in America can name 2 or 3 INXS songs (most off them of one album, Kick) so there probably isn't that much of a name recognition with them.
As for the format itself, I wish they would show more full songs. I'm thinking that as more people get cut, they'll show entire songs but right now there's just too many to cram into a 1 hour timeslot. I was initally a bit turned off when I found out that Dave Navarro was on the show (I don't really care for him outside of music) but he actually seemed to be a pretty good fit. Plus, with his whole speech about having to be thrust into a prexisting band, I think it'll be interesting to see his take on how well the final few contestants would mesh with INXS. I was also impressed that the INXS guys were honest without being harsh on the girl that was asked to leave.
I'll be tuning in tonight. I wonder who's going to end up doing "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" tonight.

Heather - pretty good, locked in on the song well.
Marty - reminds me of Jim Caviezel, but brought good vocals and energy.
Daphna - got a little raspy in her upper register, but she's interesting to watch as she works the stage.
Suzie - vocally thin at times, okay, but doesn't have a chance of winning.
Jordis - liked her performance, her vocals, the whole package (well, maybe not the dreds).
Brandon - owns the stage once again, good vocals, not great.
Mig - wasn't as impressed by his performance as INXS was.
Deanna - this lady is at the head of the pack, she's good good stage presence and a huge voice. Not sure if she's got enough charisma, though.
Will - sucked, and still has a hard time not playing to the ladies up front.
Jessica - got too loose in her upper registers, still playing up the sex card, average in this bunch.
Tara - way too country, way too safe for this competition.
Neal - still channelling Mick Jagger, but has a typical rock voice, but manic enough to be entertaining.
Ty - another powerhouse performance.
JD - redeemed himself rather well, took it up a notch with a new arrangement of his song.

Early rankings from me (very good/good/not good enough):
Very good:
Deanna
Jordis
Ty
Brandon
Good:
Marty
Heather
Daphna
JD
Neal
Mig
Not good enough:
Jessica
Tara
Suzie
Will
