When was the last time the SNL monolog
was actually a monolog?!
Seriously - in the 'old' days the gueststar would usually/sometimes do a monolog like a standup comic.
Now it seems like there is a gimmick every time so they can involve the cast or some other thing. 'Best' case they sing a song or something.

Having some of these celebs act in skits is hard enough, sometimes it's just pointless and scary to have some of them attempt a regular solo standup monologue too.
Take a look at the hosts from this past season. Only Spade and Ferrell have any real experience in standup and live comedy. Can't leave Tom Brady on his own.
Ben Affleck
Queen Latifah
Jude Law
Kate Winslet
Liam Neeson
Luke Wilson
Colin Farrell
Robert DeNiro
Topher Grace
Paul Giamatti
Paris Hilton
Jason Bateman
David Spade
Ashton Kutcher
Cameron Diaz
Tom Brady
Johnny Knoxville
Will Ferrell

Apologize for my misspelling of monologue was late!
Its just weird, because I was thinking back to episodes w/ Richard Pryor hosting and others with hillarious monologues and I miss it.. They always start out like they're going to do one and then 'something' happens.

"Use the force Luke" old but that was a good one. (luke perry hosting)
the only other one i recall was with Jamie Fox and they did a few Oliver Stone jokes, "cue the helipcopters!" and then that one guy, who is annoying, came out as Al pacino in Any Given Sunday, "You're tearing this team APART!" Imho his best appearance.

The last one I remember doing a straight out monologue was probably Chris Rock, who, if I remember correctly, just did a bit of stand up.
They were showing an older rerun with Malcolm Jamal-Warner that had Mitch Hedberg come out in the middle of the show and do stand-up. It was a weird show format wise though, they had Spike Lee on just to introduce Run DMC as far as I could tell.

I think it was the 15th Anniversary speical where Tom Hanks did a bit on what the monolog includes. Ever since watching that, I've noticed everyone says the same stuff:
Tell them how great it is to be in NYC
Say something about working with the 'crazy' people on SNL
Plug your movie/album/show/etc in an indirect way
Say "we've got a great show for you tonight"
Tell them the musical guest
The Tom Hanks thing was pretty funny...
