Degrassi

Any news about the new upcoming show, Degrassi High: The Next Generation (the new version of the old Canadian show)?

DJLinus 03-01-01 08:48 AM

No news, but this thread reminds me of Jason Lee's character in "Chasing Amy." He liked the girls on Degrassi High.

"What can I say? I have a thing for girls that say 'aboot.'"

thejammy 03-01-01 03:27 PM

Degrassi HIGH, I thought I was the only one who watched that show.

That is one with Wheels,Joey, Snake, SPIKE! I can't believe I remember the names, Kaitlen!

apchrist 10-14-01 10:21 PM

Eh! the first episode of TNG aired this evening did anyone else catch it I thought it was pretty good and stayed pretty much on par with the Junior High Series.

FWIW, sometimes they play episodes from Degrassi Jr High on TRIO, the canadian network on DirecTv

ViewAskewbian 10-15-01 04:05 PM

Saw the first ep. last night. Not bad but, it could have been better. I am sure the show will build although I am glad it is centering around the older classes kids and not them. Surprised, however, to see that, despite past news, Kevin Smith did NOT have a cameo. It appears his character was replaced by local actor/director Don McKeller...

Seeing that the show switched networks from CBC (a quasi-public broadcaster in a vein similar to PBS) to CTV (a commercial network), don't expect it to be as gritty or realistic as the old Degrassi shows. Last night's pilot confirmed that. It wasn't terrible, but the inspiration and high quality-level just weren't there. Another factor is that those of us who grew up with and loved the old series (beginning with the wonderful KIDS OF DEGRASSI STREET in the early '80s) probably have a hard time relating to today's spoiled generation.

Degrassi : Next Generation

being a kid from detroit i became a big fan of the original DJH and DH that aired on CBC. can anyone describe what the new series is like? i don't have access to watching it since its on another Canadian station.

Charlie Goose 01-31-02 12:53 PM

I wasn't aware there was another DH, so I don't know what the new show is all aboot. ;)

No Wheels? No Snake? No...kid with the hat? Outrageous!

Sparrow 01-31-02 08:40 PM

Sorry, but I haven't seen the new show, but did a query on IMDB and saw this listed last week which peaked my interest. I asked my cousin in Canada to keep an eye open and start taping!

theprophe 02-01-02 03:37 PM

I seen an episode about a month ago, they are in junior high i believe, pretty much like the orginal degrasi, spike is actually in it with her daughter emma from the older degrassi, that was kinda cool, So far it just isn't the same for me, i miss all the old characters, kaitlen, joey, wheels, etc..

Tanaraq 02-01-02 04:40 PM

The first episode of this series was a reunion show of the original cast. Even Wheels showed up which is a shock cause he's totally faded away since Degrassi ended.
Joey is a used car salesman in Toronto and has a daughter. Caitlin is an actress in LA and dumped her big time director boyfriend (Who was rumored to have been Kevin smith at some point but somebody else played him).

Now the regular episodes center around a new group of kids. Their only connections to the old class are that A) they're at Degrassi Junior High B) Spike's daughter Emma is one of the main characters and C) Snake is a computer teacher at the school.

As for how good the show is...that's questionable. I watch it and keep hoping for some of the magic of the original, but I think it's lost the fun LAME factor the orignal has. It may appeal to the kids of today (as Degrassi did to the kids back when it was first aired) but to myself (I'm 23) it's just not as much fun.

Plus nobody's dropped acid and jumped off a bridge yet which is what made the original.

Any Degrassi: The Next Generation Fans? Did you see last night episodes?

mrglass 11-13-03 11:16 AM

I catch it pretty regularly...didn't really think I would like it because I grew up watching the original series, but it's not that bad. You might want to try the "drama" forum over at televisionwithoutpity.com. It has a pretty large following over there.

HotThang 11-13-03 05:58 PM

I never miss it! :-) Kinda cool seeing the kids from the originals all grown up.

Degrassi 31/01

This Monday's Episode of degrassi start's the character arc featuring Kevin Smith. I haven't really watched this series much but I think I'll try to catch the next few episodes. Just thought I'd post this for other Kevin Smith Fans out there.

flashburn 01-25-05 08:06 PM

What channel is this show on?

apchrist 01-25-05 08:16 PM

It's on CTV in Canada but I'm not sure who airs it in the U.S.

AndyCapps 01-25-05 09:39 PM

Cool. Noggin(aka The N) has been showing it in the US. But it's at least a couple months behind CTV. The episode after the school shooting was the last new episode they showed.

movieking 01-26-05 05:59 AM

I was addicted to the different incarnations of this show growing up, starting from Kids of Degrassi Street (if anyone can remember that far back).

What part is Smith going to be playing?

Charlie Goose 01-26-05 07:20 AM

I remember Snake and the PitA kid with the hat. Wheels went to jail on vehicular manslaughter, and the fat bully got HIV.

Well, that's what the show was aboot years ago anyway.

AndyCapps 01-26-05 08:23 AM

Now Snake's a cool teacher who's married to one of the kid's mom. There are a few people from the original still around in the new one.

movieking 01-26-05 11:18 AM

They had a reunion show a few years ago on Jonovision on CBC. It was pretty interesting to see.

movieking 01-26-05 11:18 AM

BTW, Wheels did not show. Not sure why. The rest of the major characters were there.

From what I know the plot is that Kevin Smith comes up to Toronto to scout out locations for the next Jay and Silent Bob movie. The Plot of which is Jay and Silent Bob have been banned from going to school anywhere in the U.S. so they have to go to Canada to Graduate High school. I'm not sure whether Jason Mewes will appear in these episodes or not.

Sure do. That series was the most amateurish, but unassumingly charming, of the bunch. By the way, the kid who played Billy is in shitloads of trouble these days (acquitted of manslaughter and an unrelated assault; I think he's up on a charge of robbery now.)

I saw that too. Unfortunately, Caitlin didn't appear:drool: I believe Wheels didn't come because he was angry and disillusioned. It's my understanding that the kids' contract with the CBC precluded them from any residuals. At the time, I heard Wheels was working at a Money Mart or something.

movieking 01-26-05 06:33 PM

Caitlin

HAHA! That "kid's mom" is Spike from the original series! Emma is the daughter that she had with the guy that was on X and had a bad accident in which he suffered brain damage in the original show. Emma actually found him in the new series (he was played by the same actor).

So far Spike, Caitlin, Joey, and Snake have had major roles in the Next Generation and Lucy and Wheels have both made appearances.

Great show and I can't wait for the DVD's of the original series to come out next month!

Yeah, I knew she was from the original series too, just forgot her nickname(never watched the original series except in passing).

LB: Actually "Shane" was played by a different actor in the new series. A show hosted by that actor has been mentioned in this topic. Yes, "Shane" was played by Jonathan Torres, host of "Jonovision" and was a cast member on "Joe Schmo 2".

So far Spike, Caitlin, Joey, and Snake have had major roles in the Next Generation and Lucy and Wheels have both made appearances.

LB: Yea, Snake (Archie) and Spike (can't remember her non-nickname) are married. Snake teaches computer at Degrassi, I think Spike is just a stay at home mom, caring for their child. Joey owns a car dealership and is dating Catlin who is a big time TV news producer. (In the Kevin Smith episodes, she is doing a feature on him-oddly enough, its been told that Kevin Smith was a huge old-school degrassi fan and had a "crush" on the person who played "catlin" and based some of his girl characters in his films on her.) Lucy has appeared in a couple of episodes, a reunion one and Snakes/Spikes wedding. Wheels (Derrick) appeared in an episode where Snake was down because he just got word of having a specific type of cancer. Snake, Joey and Wheels hung out at the bowling alley.

LorenzoL 01-27-05 11:49 AM

I only watch the Next Generation once in a while but I'll catch this Monday episode because of Kevin Smith.

AndyCapps 01-27-05 01:08 PM

Looks like 4 new episodes start 2/18 on Noggin. Probably be awhile before the Kevin Smith episode shows up there.

I would have liked to see Wheels/Derrick again. Thanks for the update.

So how was Shane 2? Wasn't he brain damaged? What about Wheels? Did it say how much time he served?

He was still brain damaged and sort ov violent. Emma found him in a home. I can't remember if she contacted him or he contacted her. Spike was none too happy that Emma located him. For a better synopsis, you can click here to read up on it at TV Tome. It's the first episode of Season 3.

They didn't say too much about Wheels time but I know it was mentioned. Check out episode 44 in the link above.

More on the upcoming Kevin Smith episodes. Beware of Spoilers...

Spoiler:
Alanis turns hoser for 'Degrassi' spot

By ANN MARIE MCQUEEN -- Ottawa Sun

Alanis Morissette has an outrageous cameo in an upcoming episode of CTV's Degrassi: Next Generation where she spews Canadian stereotypes and makes out with Jay and Silent Bob actor Jason Mewes.

It's all part of a three-story arc her pal, director Kevin Smith, stars in starting Monday. In the episodes, Smith and Mewes stumble on Degrassi while researching a sequel to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back called Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian, Eh?

Morissette did the Degrassi cameo as a favour for Smith after appearing in his films Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Morissette's cameo, airing Feb. 7 at 8:30 p.m., ET begins with her playing a school principal in the Jay and Silent Bob movie-within-a-show.

Wearing a Maple Leafs jersey (boo!), plaid lumberjacket, full fur hat, fringed suede skirt and mukluk-style boots, the show opens with Morissette screaming at Mewes, who plays Jay, and Smith, who plays Silent Bob. Canadian stereotypes from poutine to the belief we say "aboot" instead of "about" fly.

"You want to get oot of Grade 12?" yells Morissette. "You've got to start learning what the metric system is all aboot!"

After the scene wraps, Morissette replies to a joke Prime Minister Paul Martin might revoke her citizenship.

"Where am I going to hide out for four more years of Bush in the States?" she says.

Smith got hooked on Degrassi Junior High after catching the show on duty at the store which inspired his breakthrough cult hit Clerks. He writes about his long-standing obsession in a Canada-friendly article in the new issue of TV Guide.

Smith said he loved the show because it featured kids with real problems, "not that 90210 kinda TV problem crap."

"Yes, yours truly the guy who cast Alanis Morissette as God (more local pandering) was tear stained in the middle of a new Jersey convenience store, thanks to Degrassi," he writes.

Smith went on to name a Clerks character after his favourite Degrassi leading lady, Caitlin Ryan. He spent $2,000 from his first Clerks cheque to buy up episodes from a scholastic video supply store.

He put Shannon Doherty in a Degrassi jacket in his film Mallrats and also had actor Jason Lee eating pizza and chatting with Ben Affleck in front of an episode of the show in Chasing Amy.
