Tournament Shmournament...old fashioned Sci-Fi throwdown

I was poking around some old threads during a search and stumbled across those old tournaments from back in the day, and it seems to me that they were done all wrong.

What we needed was for somebody to better define the genre, give some choices, and see what happens. Surely somebody will think I left something out, but I think most folks will find their favorites here.

The genre is sci-fi...the traveling to other planets and having adventures type of sci-fi pioneered by Flash Gordon and the original Star Trek

Reasons why shows were left out:

Buffy, Angel, Smallville: Just not sci-fi. Maybe action, maybe fantasy, but NOT sci-fi.

X-files, Twilight Zone, Quantum Leap, Roswell: Sort of sci-fi, but still not what I'm talking about.

Battlestar Galactica, Voyager, Enterprise, Earth 2, Buck Rogers: Eliminated due to lack of space. If they are your favorite, please watch one of the above immidiately.

I will abstain my vote until I finish Babylon 5, but I suspect it will get my vote, just BARELY edging out Farscape.

I'm not into any of the show, but I have seen an episode of Dr. Who on PBS late night and it was one of the most surreal, nonsensical thing I've ever seen. It was pretty fun to try and follow.

Dr. Who varied widely in its 20+ seasons. I used to watch it on PBS on Sunday mornings when I was a kid.

I think whichever Dr. Who you grew up with was *your* Dr. Who, so mine was the guy with the curly hair and the scarf. He was a cool MF traveling around in a phone booth.

At any rate, it won't get my vote, but I think it's pretty highly regarded in this genre.

Space Disco?

Anyway, I got Dr. Franklin and the Reading Rainbow guy in there, so I think I'm OK with the NAACP.

There are so many good ones to choose from, I don't think I can pick just one. I like them all for diffrent reasons (except for Dr. Who but that's b/c I've never watched it).

Wow, lots of love for Firefly! I must admit that it started off more polished than ANY of the other entries. But to me, the story with Firefly is a "could have". It could have turned out amazing and was certainly headed that way, but it also could have fallen apart. Too bad we'll never know, though I'm really looking forward to the movie.

Personally, I finished Babylon 5 tonight, and I'm tempted to vote for it...but I'm still leaning toward Farscape. I shall sleep on it.

Who?

Sorry, DS9 was never my thing. I think I was just sort of "over" Star Trek at that point. I just put it on the poll because I know a lot of folks hold it in high esteem.

I still like how SG1 continues to build on it's history but not so much that you have to watch all 8 years. Other shows have arcs, but SG-1 still has repercussions from stuff that happened in the the first few years.

Original Star Trek. Sorry but every other choice just wants to be as exciting, interesting, and socially important as ST was and still is. IMO none of them are. Not even close.

Farscape, though on a different day I might have picked Babylon 5. I also like DS9. And I agree with the comment about Firefly being a could have been--I loved it, but it didn't go the distance like Farscape, B5, or DS9. If we were just comparing first seasons though, it would definately be in the running for me.

What I like best seems to vary with what I've watched last between Babylon 5 and Deep Space Nine. Right now that would be DS9 and it's the one that gets my vote. (Although you caught me: I planned on going with a "Wham!" viewing of B5 shortly and doing it that way would sway my vote back )

If the box sets weren't so prohibitively expensive, I'd probably give DS9 a go. Maybe I'll put them in my cue or something. I recall watching the first few, but then I just saw it occasionally in passing and it never seemed to make any sense.

So far a virtual 4 way tie between TNG, B5, Farscape and Firefly. I'm still amazed at how well Firefly is doing. It was AMAZINGLY polished for it's first season, but it was so short lived. Was I the only one who thought the "western" angle was a bit hoakie?
