I have a question about UPN.
Is it a network or what? Because I've heard of shows being on a network called UPN yet my cable company doesn't carry it. Niether does Direct TV or DISH. And it isn't an over the air network at least not in my part of the country. So who does get it? Major cities or what?
|
It is an OTA network. Barely. Have it here in Baltimore and Washington.
I would guess your smaller markets may not have it. |
You can get UPN via dish network with their super stations package.
|
I think in the biz UPN and the WB are sometimes referredto as "netlets". They are anetwork, but not a major network since they aren'tinall markets. The WB has more coverage than UPN though. I think in some markets, UPN and WB shows are carried on the same independent stations (usually UHF channels).
In Detroit, we had two long-standing UHF independent stations who were each able to take on WB and UPN programming for prime-time. I'd imagine inmarkets that didn't have multiple stations outside the 4 networks, there wouldn't be a station to carry the programming, |
Ok that answers my question.
|
The UPN is also the old WWOR (ch.9) in NYC. At one time that was the home of NY Mets baseball and they also showed movies.
The only thing I ever tune into now on that channel is re-runs of King of Queens and COPS. |
It sounds like I'm lucky I don't get it.

After which, I'll be joining the crowd and not having a clue what they play anymore. Stupid UPN affiliate can't seem to broadcast steady HD either. -ohbfrank- It's a good thing they don't play anything more interesting. |

I also kind of like KevinHill. My husband enjoyed that Missy Elliott American Idol-type series. I still watch Enterprise (I'm sticking it out for the rest of the series.) |
Oh yeah that's right, I forgot about Enterprise. For some reason I was thinking that was on the DoubleU Bee.
|
I watch Enterprise. But it's on NBC. Of course it is on Saturday nights at 12:30am.
|
Veronica Mars is the reason to watch UPN. It is one of my favorite shows. It is very hard to describe so watch it and you'll be hooked. It is about a teenage girl who works part-time with her private investigator dad. Watch it on UPN Tuesdays 9/8C.

I also kind of like KevinHill The really strange thing out here in Sacramento at least is the ads that get played on UPN.. at least for the primetime HD stuff. Off cable or none HD you get the normal blitz of lame ads. At the same time, during the same commercial break, the over the air HD feed really has no ads, at all.. They just loop and loop and loop the same promo's for other UPN shows. Sometimes playing the same ads for, Kevin Hill and Veronica Mars back to back.. I guess they can't get the national ads being the network is not everywhere? No idea, just sort strange and a little annoying.. On the plus side, they do have a very good HD signal.. Much better picture quality then even the bigger networks in many cases.. Depends on the show and also show just how little FOX network cares about HD when a smaller network like UPN puts out a much better HD broadcast as far as over all look. |
direct tv in chicago has it. i think its a local channel here...i only watch it for the king of queens and becker reruns. is fear factor (reruns)on there also? thx to tivo i dont know what channel half of the shows i watch are on!

C'mon... Veronica Mars. Veronica Mars. Veronica Mars. Veronica Mars. http://wwwimage.upn.com/shows/veroni...s/bio_bell.jpg
Watch this show, people! Tuesdays at 9/8c on UPN |

Do a TiVo or channel guide search for Veronica Mars and Kevin Hill, I'll bet you find both, also at weird times.
|
I'm thinking that in areas not covered by UPN, they probably shop the shows around for other local stations to carry, and your NBC affiliate bought the rights to air Enterprise.

UPN does have 180 affiliates, so there likely aren't that many areas without UPN (though a small handful are cable-only affiliates). Certainly neither the WB nor UPN have had as much success building their networks as FOX had building theirs (we're ten years in on both the WB and UPN. FOX's ten-year anniversary would've been in 1997. By then FOX was far more established and successful than either the WB or UPN). |
UPN = America's Next Top Model
Blind Date The Mets games that aren't on MSG or FSN are now on WB 11. |

UPN is as much of a network as WB is, or rather it's less of one. It's the #6 network for a reason.
For cities that don't have enough commercial local stations to carry the WB or UPN, usually their shows will end up getting syndicated on the main stations. |
