There was recently a woman who had a similar tumor (weighing several hundred pounds that developed over decades) removed - and she lived to fight another day! But I can't remember what show that was on.

George is a clueless moron.

The whole Sandra Oh-in-her-underwear storyline isn't working for me.

You knew Alex would fuck that situation up one way or the other.

I liked the Parkinson's storyline.

Meredith should have called the Nazi a bitch.

Red Dog 05-02-05 08:47 AM

Painful to watch the George character.

Legolas 05-02-05 08:33 PM

They turning Bailey into another "Weaver bitch" on ER?

Patman 05-02-05 09:00 PM

Bailey's been a bitch since day one.

They just have to reinforce that fact every other episode.

STRONG MEDICINE A real-life surgeon gives ABC's Grey's Anatomy a clean (enough) bill of health
*
It's an epidemic: Networks can't stop with the medical dramas. The latest entry in the tumescent genre is ABC's Grey's Anatomy, which follows a group of attractive but clueless surgery interns working at a Seattle hospital. But what does Hollywood really know about the sleep-deprived, pressure-filled lives of fledgling doctors? To find out, we asked Dr. Pippa Newell, a second-year surgery resident at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, to diagnose Grey's Anatomy: Is it creatively stable or terminally cliché? — As Told To Kristen Baldwin

Before I saw the first episode of the show, I was worried that there was going to be a lot of sex in the call rooms, and I was going to have to say that was really inaccurate because it's never happened to me. But fortunately, there was no sex.

I love the diversity of the intern characters. There's the cocky jackass Alex (Justin Chambers); the pushy Cristina (Sandra Oh); the pretty, timid Izzie (Katherine Heigl); and the dopey George (T.R. Knight). Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) seems really believable — tough but not overly assertive. I've heard stories of interns and attending physicians getting together, like Meredith and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), but it's very hush-hush. Most attendings are old and married and gross. If they were as hot as Patrick Dempsey, maybe it would happen more.

It seems like Anatomy is all about competition and the surgeons' egos, but hospitals are not about ego. The patient comes first. The scene where the interns are heckling George during his first surgery, taking bets on whether he's going to fail — that kind of thing doesn't happen. And if somebody's spilling stool into the abdomen, the attending isn't going to taunt the intern — like ''What the f--- you gonna do?'' — the way Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) does to George. It's training, not harassment. But the first time I watched the scene where Meredith's patient has a seizure and she doesn't know what to do, honestly, I felt nauseated because I've been in situations like that where I've felt just helpless. It was too accurate.

There's a lot more downtime for the residents on the show than in real life. And no shifts are 48 hours. It makes for good TV, but it's against the law in New York, fortunately for me. At the end of the shift, Meredith looked way too good to be post-call. If I'm really going to respect this show, by the sixth episode I want to see bags under the eyes; I want to see yellow teeth from drinking too much soda on call; I want to see a unibrow on somebody. Still, I think it's a great show. I'm totally hooked. Accuracy: B Entertainment Value: A-

Grey's Anatomy 5/8/05

5/8/05

Can't quite put my finger on it yet, but this show continues to be eminently watchable week after week.

Can you lead a relatively normal life with the left side of your brain removed? Too bad George probably doesn't know how to play his hand when he turns out he was right about the bourbon on the doctor who fell asleep at the wheel of the happy gas/juice.

Too bad (Leon from Playmakers) died from all that nutty painful leisure time activities, like voluntarily getting shot, or getting tattoos.

Will the girl with the short bowels now have to eat small meals all day because she can't eat much or store much in her intestines in order for her stomach to process the small amounts of food she can ingest at a given meal? No more buffets for her.

I would have punted the Ever Carradine character out of the room for all that nagging during the extraction by Dr. Model.

Looks like Christina is in for a bumpy ride (though it was telegraphed early by her flu-like symptons).

MrX 05-08-05 10:25 PM

It'd be funny if Christina ends up getting knocked up by one of the Doc's when Merideth is cathing so much shit.

This was the first time they've made Alex a somewhat decent human being.

Poor George. He should do the smart thing and make a run at Izzy.

B.A. 05-09-05 07:24 AM

The little girl storyline was hard for me to watch.

I was hoping Izzy would give Ever Carradine a swift kick to the jaw.

C'mon, George - everyone knows there is a code! Duh!

I could care less about Christina...

runner001 05-09-05 07:59 AM

that was amazing with the brain surgery! I mean taking out half of the brain, that's incredible!! has anyone every heard of this actually being done? was this artistic license or is this actually possible?

did I miss it or did they not show the pregnancy test results?

beavismom 05-09-05 08:56 AM

I don't know about half, but I do know someone who had a fairly large portion of their brain removed to deal with severe epilepsy.

Phil L. 05-09-05 09:54 AM

Anybody know what the song was that played throughout the opening scenes?
It was also used in a Delta Airlines/Fly Song commercial.

Excellent episode last night. Despite the fact that I initially started watching due to my wife's interest, this show is really growing on me.

another solid episode. I think if you check out adforum.com
adforum search they have sections on commercials and music for shows that are discussed.

Legolas 05-09-05 11:48 AM

I hope they don't go with conventional TV plot lines with relationships, i.e. the breakup, the hate, the dating others, the getting back together in the end, etc. There can be good stories to be told in keeping Meredith and Derek together. They didn't drag out George's crush out for a billion episodes (like Smallville), so that's a start.

Believe it or not, it's real. I remember seeing a documentary about it on The Discovery Channel a few years ago. Although it's rare enough it would have been a much bigger deal than the way "Grey's Anatomy" portrayed it, and no way would the girl's parents have OK'd such radical, life-altering surgery without getting a second opinion. I imagine Shepherd would have insisted they get a second opinion as well.

Here's are a couple of excerpts from www.encephalitis.info:

Rasmussen’s encephalitis (RE; also called Rasmussen’s syndrome) is a progressive inflammation of the part of the brain called the cerebral cortex, which is made up of a right and a left hemisphere. The disease starts at one site in one hemisphere and spreads to adjoining areas on the same side. Curiously, it does not spread to the other hemisphere. The inflammation leads to loss of nerve cells and scar formation and usually results in severe disability. Although RE is most often diagnosed in children under the age of 10 years, it can also start in adolescence and adulthood. It is a rare disorder and probably affects one person in every 500,000 to 1,000,000.

(Surgery) is the traditional treatment for advanced RE, and is used mainly to improve seizure control in patients with established disability. The extent of the surgery is determined by the severity, duration, rate of progression, and site of the disease, and the age of the patient. In patients with severe disease, all of the affected hemisphere may be removed (hemispherectomy).

excellent use of "hummingbird" by wilco to close the show.

Big Boy Laroux 05-12-05 12:51 AM

finally got around to watching this. this show has grown on me, too (i missed the first episode).

but isn't it a little early in a series to go down the pregnancy route?

Red Dog 05-12-05 02:01 PM

It is a good thing that the characters are interesting on this show because these plotlines have been used zillions of times on other shows.

I wish Christina would get hit by a bus on her way to work or something. I can't stand that character one bit.

Izzy was cute this ep, to say the least.

I agree

Good to see George moving past Merideth with the nurse.

Patman 05-15-05 11:26 PM

This is such a chick show, but I'm okay with it.

Christina needs a personality transplant. STAT! It's weird I have no strong reaction to her plight, no matter which way she goes on the pregnancy issue.

Alex's patient, Devo, had some good lines, I see her tenure on Buffy wasn't wasted.

Good to see George with some starch in his scrubs now.

Meredith almost pushed a little too hard, both on the professional and personal fronts.

What I wouldn't give for a Cricket Cup Cake...
