Reports: Berman exits Fox for Paramount
By David B. Wilkerson, MarketWatch
Last Update: 4:45 PM ET March 22, 2005
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Gail Berman has resigned her post as president of entertainment at the Fox broadcast network to take a job at Viacom's Paramount Pictures, according to published reports Tuesday.
Berman, who took the Fox job in 2000, will become one of the first executives hired by new Paramount Chairman Brad Grey, Dow Jones Newswires and Broadcasting & Cable reported, citing unnamed sources.
A Fox spokesman declined comment. A Viacom spokesman was not immediately available.
Under Berman's guidance, Fox developed the hit drama "24," as well as the critically-acclaimed sitcom "Arrested Development."
Most recently, the network boasted of its first-ever February sweeps win in total households, while also garnering the most viewers among adults 18-49, 18-34 and 25-54. Its telecast of Super Bowl XXXIX and the strength of the reality program "American Idol" fueled Fox's victory.

Posted this in the AD thread... but worth saying again...
FUCK! The biggest supporter of AD is gone now. Not saying there is not a chance to get it renewed... but it just doesn't look like a lock anymore.

That is bad news.

Ah, but what if Fox gets somebody in there that actually supports new shows? Fox seems cancel crazy if shows don't perform after 3 episodes, and the fact that one show out of a hundred got saved for a second season is beyond the point for me. For every episode of Arrested Development we got, there is a cancelled show that should have continued at Fox.

Like what? Johnny Zero? Lone Gunmen? I know fox cancels a lot of shows. But you have to admit that a lot of shows are total crap to begin with. It's pilot season and it's still unknown if she will stick out through it and into may for fall schedule set up. If she does, then there is a chance she would keep AD on.
The main reason shows get canceled is for mainly good reasons. sure, their is some that just get terrible luck.

Lone Gunmen, Wonderfalls, Tru Calling, Firefly, John Doe, Undeclared, Greg the Bunny, Futurama, Freakylinks (I liked it at least.) Family Guy (Coming back only since Fox saw how the error of their ways via DVD sales)...
The prolonging of the X-Files, specifically Seasons 8 and 9 were under Berman's watch. A shame about AD, but they can get someone that would cancel AD a dozen times over if that someone would have handled an amazing show like Firefly better.
And Wonderfalls and Firefly both got royally screwed by Fox by no fault of their own. Wonderfalls was just a mess in the promotional sense, being advertised as another Joan of Arcadia, and Firefly by doing absurd things with the episode order. And Tru Calling... Never giving it a shot with The OC as a lead-in in favor of North Shore and Point Pleasant wasn't exactly the best decision. Good riddance to Berman.

the network has idol, 24, house, simpons, and The OC.., not a ton of stuff to work with..
AD is one of there very few gems, I can't believe they would axe it, the ratings may not be there, but I bet you the demographic #s are pretty decent

FOX is constantly in the bottom rankings of networks overall because they continuously monkey around with their scheduled programming. (How many times do they replay That 70's Show in one week?) Tonight [gasp] American Idol will be repeated because of a phone number flub, pushing the premier of Life on a Stick opposite the NCAA tournament. Smart move...

a new head of programming can only help at this point right? I know Berman pretended that she was a fan, but the programs on that network right now are pretty awful, they can thank Idol for hiding a lot of problems.
If you are going to come in and assess what the quality is, its a verys hort list.
AD has a better than 50/50 chance of landing on another ntwork, there are too many people power people associated with the show that can find it a new home...

And a new replacement is in FX's President, Peter Liguori.
Peter Liguori Ascends Fox Throne
liguori-reid.jpgWow, that was fast. Guess the folks at the top of the Fox food chain were terribly afraid that all of the little chicks in the pilot season incubator would fall ill if neglected for too long. They’ve already named FX head Peter Liguori to take over for the bolting Gail Berman, ensuring that they have someone to shepherd such promising shows as Dirtbags, Don’t Ask (not the John Goodman project that eventually became the short-lived Normal, Ohio—but very close), and Marriage 911. A hint for the new guy: They keep the Xanax in a Ziploc bag in the top left drawer of your new desk. Take a handful before you even consider picking up Pool Boys, then order seven more seasons of American Idol instead. That should get you through the first day on the job.
