DS9 changed their theme for the later seasons as well.

Keeping on the sci-fi circuit, Farscape changed themes after the second season. Not a radical shift, but definately a more charged theme.

Unhappily Ever After - Their own theme song (Sample here) and later changed to "Hit the Road Jack"

The UPN Twilight Zone changed themes mid-way through it's only season. I thought the first theme fit the opening titles much better. The second theme was "harder" and more "rockish".

Which will probably revert back to the original theme for it's DVD release (curse you, music rights!).

Didn't South Park change mid run as well?

Don Homer 03-17-05 08:53 PM

Get Smart changed its theme song when it entered its final season, though it was a different version of the original song.

they modified it a bit but enterprise has always had that song

and I'm 99% sure the other treks only had minor changes but the overall theme was the same

resinrats 03-17-05 11:38 PM

Beverly Hills 90210 had a theme change. Only some of the first shows had the origonal, then they went to the one they used for the rest of the series.

By the rules stated: DSP, Alias have not changed their songs. It may have been played differently, but it is still the same thing.

No, Kenny just says something different about halfway through the run.

I thought the 'Motown' opening used in the Cosby Show was different? and the first season?

How about the Sinbad show? Didn't last very long, but I think it had three songs.

Growing Pains I think had a different first season theme.

You know, I haven't really ever tried to listen to his line in the newer theme. The one in the old one took me a couple episodes to determine.

It's entirely possible that it's DS9 I'm thinking of and not Voyager. I have the memory of a hamster.

DS9's opening changed when it became a busier station. The theme song's tempo was increased a bit, it sounds a little more exciting. But it's not really a new theme.

Well, it's the same song, but they've...revamped it a little. It was a little faster/harder when they went to 4th grade, then later on (can't remember what season), didn't it get all twangy? It's still pretty much the same song, though.

I agree. The Hank Williams stuff isn't so horrible, it's just that the original opening, along with perhaps Wide World of Sports theme, is one of the most recognizable and best intros in TV history IMO. Occasionally hearing clips of Cosell doing the opening intro over that music still brings chills.

paulringodaman 03-19-05 11:02 AM

I don't know if this counts, but the Wonder Years changed segments of the song played for its theme song. I can hardly remember..i know in the midseasons they extended the song and I think near the end they just played the 'rockin' part of Joe Cocker's song.

Bell65 03-19-05 02:18 PM

Salute Your Shorts changed slightly when they changed a couple cast members

also didnt the Cheers theme change a bit from the coach to post-coach years??

like it started off all quiet and slow int he early years but in later years picked up from the beginning???

But, it was funny when they did a show talking about another show changing it's theme song.

Joe Molotov 03-19-05 04:43 PM

MST3K always had the same tune, but the lyrics changed depending who was on it.

kcdny 03-20-05 03:23 PM

Roseanne

The theme changed a couple of times but all in all the same instrumental with different variations. Up until the near end when Blues Traveler added lyrics and sang an actual theme song.

Still crossing my fingers for a dvd release.

Actually just found out that a dvd release is forthcoming later this year by Anchor Bay

Where did that quote from your signature come from? It struck a little too close to home for me... :)

"Top Gun...The sad thing is there's like a million better movies out there. How could one group of people, guys have you, like that movie that much that they know every line and every scene from it...and they were straight guys, cause they were hittin on that Beth girl...It's a sad day for America"- Dave Ulrich(My Drunk Friend)

Back on topic, none of the Star Trek themes have changed other than to speed them up a bit.

Also, I just watched the complete UPN Twilight Zone on DVD and did notice a different theme. The only one I remember was the one done by Korn.

The Infidel 03-20-05 08:06 PM

Obviously haven't seen it in a long time, but I seem to remember Bosom Buddies changing its theme. I remember Billy Joel's "My Life" being a theme song, but don't remember if that was the first one, or the one they changed it to. Ring a bell with anyone else?

Jericho 03-20-05 10:11 PM

Not really much of a change, but I always remember the extended version of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air song. What was the deal with that, it was just used very early on I believe. Guess it was too long...

one of my roommates had this quote for real when he got drunk, it was gold!

majorjoe23 03-20-05 11:09 PM

Didn't Martin change theme songs? Or maybe it was just what happened in the opening.

RoQuEr 03-20-05 11:35 PM

scrubs had a shortened intro theme for a few eps in season 2.

According to IMDB.com, a different theme was used on the USA Network reruns. The theme,"Try To Shake Me Loose", was performed by Stephanie Mills.

Also, the Billy Joel theme song was sung by the cast, with Tom Hanks on lead.

redskull47 03-21-05 01:58 PM

"I Dream of Jeannie" changed themes after it's first season. The original theme was pretty strange sounding, full of fits & starts. The second theme, the one we all know & recognize, was much better IMO.

The Dick Van Dyke show also kind of changed themes. The first season had a more jazzy theme which would occasionally stop for a bout of synchopated drums (while they'd show "snapshots" of the cast) before they switched to the more familiar theme with the "couch tripping" gag.

Jboone 03-21-05 05:47 PM

I believe That Girl changed its theme in its last season.

Both Family Guy and All in the Family rerecorded their opening songs.

Buttmunker 03-22-05 05:25 AM

Alice changed the lyrics to its theme song, even though the music was essentially the same.

1st & 2nd Season: Early to rise, early to bed. In and between I cooked and cleaned and went out of my head.

3rd & 4th Season: Used to be sad, used to be shy. Funniest thing, the saddest part is I never knew why...

The Valeyard 03-22-05 12:41 PM

Didn't V: The Series change themes toward the end of it's short run?

Andrew

Ayre 03-22-05 12:55 PM

oops

digidoh 04-09-05 04:50 PM

The Urkel Sho--er, Family Matters originally had a short version of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World", before they settled on the familiar "As Days Go By."

uli2000 04-10-05 01:12 PM

CHiPs changed from a theme featuring a great brass band sound to some disco electronic crap for the last 3 or 4 season. BTW, any news about this on DVD? I know Ponch could use some cash.

Rex Fenestrarum 04-10-05 10:10 PM

This is perhaps not what you were looking for, but the theme song for the first episode of Popular was different. The show opens as the singer is sitting on wall (IIRC) and singing the song, as if it's a music video. The camera then pans into Sam McPherson's house and the episode begins.

The song actually survived as the closing song for every other episode; it was replaced with that Kendall Payne song for the opener.

Tscott 04-10-05 10:53 PM

Going back a ways, Double Trouble (84-85) revamped the show completely between its two seasons and changed theme songs. Both songs can be found as .wav's at the linked site (it's true you can find anything on the internet).

klandersen 04-10-05 11:53 PM

Enterprise. The newest theme rocks. And by "rocks" I mean "sucks ass."
Again, it is not a different song or words added to an instrumental as the Original poster points out.
