Star Trek New Voyages. Koenig is going to do it

http://newvoyages.com/news.html
I'd heard of this but avoided it figuring it was lame ubergeek fan stuff. Until I saw this article.

Koenig has agreed to be part of it and DC Fontana, a professional writer that has been doing Trek stuff for ages. I figure if they've agreed to work on it it must have something going for it, so I'm going to give it a shot.
So far it looks like 2 episodes are out.
this mirror seems to be best

Easily the best fanfilms I've seen. You can almost say they have higher production values than the original they're being based on......almost.

Looking forward to Koenig!

Wonder how long it will be until Paramount shuts this little operation down with a big 'ol lawsuit.

Why? Nobody is making money off it. The 2 episodes so far are free to download. It's not any different than any other fanfilms, only they're actually kinda good.

But it still dilutes the trademark. In Paramount's eyes, they could see the potential that someone would rather watch this for free than go out and buy that spiffy new First Contact dvd or catch a rerun of Next Gen or DS9, thus costing them money.

I don't buy that at all. It's not requiring money that might be spent elsewhere on DVDs. As for reruns: Paramount gets their money when they sell the repeat rights to networks. If anything, Spike would be making that complaint.

Well, Spike and Paramount are both owned by Viacom, but the argument is there. If someone can watch something for free on the web, why would a network want to pay millions a year in licensing fees for the same/similar program that they have to put advertisting on to support? It's up to Paramount to protect their franchise from misuse.

As has already been pointed out, you don't have to make money off of something to violate a copyright.

Chekov was the Wesley Crusher of TOS.

Downloaded both; watched the first one last night, and wow... that was bad. From the way everyone was talking, I had at least hoped for something approaching semi-professional acting, directing and writing. Basically the only good thing about it is the retro-graphics and modelwork. The script, actors and camerawork were just sad. I suppose it's good for the convention crowd.

I never said it was West Wing material. It's good for what it is: a super low budget nonprofessional fanfilm.

Check out the Starship Exeter fanpics. They aren't the greatest, but I enoyed the one episode they did more than any of the New Voyages one. The first episode, "The Savage Curtain" at least had a plot that had focus, which is something that I can't say for either of the New Voyages episodes. They have a preview for their next episode which according to it should be out tomorrow.

Not really. But perhaps it's good for a super low-budget nonprofessional fanfilm that didn't try to find talented people...

I am enjoying New Voyages far more than Enterprise, I can honestly say that.
