This is from "Watch with Kristin" chat transcript on eonline.com:
What's the deal with Mario quitting Idol!?
Apparently, it has nothing to do with his family! The press was originally reporting that Mario left the competition because he needed to take care of some family issues, but Mario insisted to us this afternoon that it has nothing to do with that. "Nothing with family. This is myself. This is a decision that I made for myself. I don't think that I won't have a career in this business because music is my passion. I love to do it. I'll always do it. But there's just things I need to take care of right now, and I'd like to keep that private. It was a very hard decision to make. Basically it comes down to my intuition. It wasn't time for me to do this now. There were certain aspects of my life that I needed to take care of first. My priorities, I needed that balance and for some reason, I wasn't putting myself first. I'd like to apologize if I've disappointed fans, and just know that this is not the last you've heard of Mario Vazquez."

I don't think being gay would be a reason to quit....I mean, it is pretty obvious a finalist from previous seasons likely is. No need to name names!
It's more likely a much worse skeleton in the closet....

I am sure we will hear about his new record deal in about 10 days, then his album will conveniently hit shelves about May 24 the Idol FInal.

Its the only thing that makes sense, an offer he couldn't refuse.

Are you comparing 3 days on FOX5 news and the NYPost with the publicity of WINNING American Idol?!?!?!?
Tonight Show appearence?!?
Morning talk shows?!?!
Radio?!?!
TV?!?!
WHY DO YOU THINK THE NEWS IS COVERING HIM?????
If he quit his job at the GAP would he be on the Post cover and Drudge?
ITS BECAUSE AI IS SO HUGE...and the next 12 weeks, it only gets bigger.

While I still think Mario is being highly overrated and overhyped by almost anyone here, I will say that he probably would do better on "Latin Dance Party" week than Nikko will.
Than again, maybe not.

I saw Mario on Regis and Kelly this morning.
He explained why he dropped out and compared it to going out with someone for awhile but realizing "you just aren't in love".
Regis was like "You were only on for a week!"
He also said he hadn't had time to call his mom yet since the AI schedule was so hectic. But he had time to go on Regis & Kelly?

I am going to revise my prediction and say that Mario will be forgotten within TWO weeks. He's had his 15 minutes with this ridiculous move. It was a pretty big deal this week and everybody is talking about it. By next week, no one will care. By the end of the show, people will wonder what the fuss was about and won't even remember his last name (maybe even his first).

Mario retained Clay Aiken's lawyer before quitting Idol:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Mario Vazquez is no longer contending for the "American Idol" crown, but he's following in the footsteps of one of its most famous alumni -- Clay Aiken.
Vazquez has hired Aiken's lawyer, Jess L. Rosen -- the man who sprung Aiken from the contract binding him to the 19 Entertainment, the management company owned by "American Idol" creator Simon Fuller.
19 Entertainment oversees not just the recording deal for "American Idol" stars, but also merchandising, touring, sponsorship and movie deals. The "Idol" contracts are considering among the more restrictive in the industry.
Aiken is now managed by leading management group The Firm.

It would be like Pixar not holding to the Disney contract after they became famous/loved after Toy Story 2.
I hope AI wins this one!

After a year, Clay must have been tired of the contract. He did appear on AI a year after he came in 2nd. So, he did go on Tour, make singles and at least one CD for 19 entertainment.
I do not know what the contract says, but after 2 years - there has to be an end to it. AI did there part and Clay did his.
I never knew that Clay had to get himself out of the contract with 19 Entertainment.
Here is a quote from a news website concerning Clay and get out of contract:
"After losing "American Idol" to Ruben Studdard, Aiken realized that he was stuck with a management contract that kept him with Fuller, the show's owner, for years to come at a very high commission.
Rosen got him out of it and moved him over to Jeff Kwatinetz's behemoth agency, The Firm."
The problem I have with Mario is that he did not do his job, some agent must have waved some money under his nose and hit took the bait.

Uh... if Aiken signed the form, then why is he allowed to renege on the deal? I know the contract is very restrictive, but the performers should know that going in, and AI is really what gives them the spotlight... the enormous amount of publicity was really the only way Aiken was going to make it so fast. If you don't want to be stuck in the contract, don't sign the deal!
Of course, the lawyer should have an easy job of convincing AI to give Mario up for some petty sum... I mean, who cares?

I would bet that all of these kids going in are not savvy with legal contracts and long-term commitments. This should be a wakeup call for future AI wannabes.
As for Aiken, I read somewhere that there was a conflict of interest with management and that is how he was able to get out of the harsh contract. I think AI wanted him to downplay his success causing Clay to forgo some attractive opportunities. In that same article, it mentioned how Simon Fuller takes up to 50% out of earnings from all the signed idols. This includes merchandise, touring, recordings, and pretty much everything with their name on it. In addition, I believe the idols are responsible for paying their own expenses. I think Aiken did his time as a runner-up.
If N’Sync can break away from Lou Perlman than why can't Aiken?
