The Contender New Episode 3/10/05 @ 10 PM

It looks like NBC is having the second episode of The Contender tonight at 10 PM right after The Apprentice.

If you miss it, it seems like they replay it on CNBC a lot.

Looking forward to this one. Finally got to watch the first episode and it wasn't bad. Hopefully it will find an audience. I think the time slot and starting on the half hour hurt it last week.

Wasn't there some other boxing show on another channel? What happened to it?

Jonathan is one ripped SOB. I think Jesse is going to get schooled.

It was on FOX a long time ago. I don't remember the name of it.

I guess I was wrong.

Jonathan was in total boxing shape and other than the first round, he got schooled. Props to Jesse on that fight.

It's either edit it or make the show 90 min. 90 min wouldn't fly in prime time.

Seriously, I really like this show, but the editing is just plain frustrating. It's hard to be focused on the fight when the editors seem to have ADD.

I loved it when Stallone was so winded for his big scene and the guy says "You need some Gatorade, man?"

you gotta remember that Sly is almost 59. He looks like he's in his 40s and he keeps his body in shape like he's still in his 20s or 30s. I'll tell you this much, Sly is in 100 times better shape than Ah-Nold.

This show is great. Props to Jesse - 2 weeks in a row the underdog made the challenge and got the win.
I liked Ishe last episode but I thought he was a real bitch this ep. Shoulda taken the fight and called out Ahmed.

dunno. i think that little "chat" foreman had with them and Ishe's comment about how it made him think was his reason for not taking the fight. Then again, it might have been an excuse for pussying out. I don't like him either way, especially when he punked out on his own team and was chearing for East. That's just lame.

This was the first episode that I watched and came away surprised at how much I liked it. Sure, it's as badly edited as The Apprentice (I don't watch Survivor, so I can't attest to the editing there), but it held me more after one episode than this whole season of The Apprentice had.

One question: Who is the boxer that committed suicide? I know it isn't Jonathan only because he's married and I remember hearing that the one who did it wasn't married but had a girlfriend and child.

It was Najai that killed himself.

Man, sly's got those friekish veins popping out everywhere!

Surprised by the ending, and it felt like the fight was trimmed even more than the first (probably due to the 60min runtime) but all in all, a pretty decent ep.

it's the juice. I'm not sure if he's still on it but I'd be shocked if he didn't use it in the past.

didn't sly say something about him now going to have a heart attack. Man that was funny

Anyway, I wasn't surprised at the ending. The white dude Jesse was narrating the whole time and we didn't see the other guy Jonathan and he hardly said anything. So I figured from the editing that Jesse had won.
The whole show looked pretty bad so I am going to pass on this.

These voiceovers during the challenges are so annoying. "Come on guys, you need to move faster" -- spoken in a normal volume while the guys are half a stadium away. And then "East Coast, you're at the mercy of the West, again" in a normal voice while the other team is loudly celebrating their victory... Mark Burnett actually thinks the viewers would believe that the voiceover was done at the same time as the actual challenge? (It's worse than the blatant voiceovers on the Apprentice.)

Oscar De la Hoya stole the idea from Sly and put it on TV first. I think he called it "The Next Great Champ" or something like that. I don't think it lasted 1 full season. Sly threatened to sue over it but I don't know what happened with that. This one is more well put together, I think.

The problems from the first episode were more pronounced and annoying this time around: the voice-over in the challenges, the fake ambient noise during the fights, the spastic editing during the fights, etc. Just show them boxing, damn it. And I reiterate my desire for the first 45 minutes to contain something more than just repetitive human interest stuff and a challenge. This show would be the perfect chance to educate people about the sport of boxing, but it's being wasted. I still enjoyed it, but I can see myself getting very annoyed if every episode is the same as the last.
