Couldn't have said it better. I think this is the feeling of all us disgruntled former X-Filers. I bailed once they tried to bring in the Terminator. Ivantod's list is pretty comprehensive though I also liked the ep in which a man needs to keep moving after his wife's head burst from what seemed like an anuerism. I also enjoyed Mutato, with J.Pederman as a mad(?) scientist.

Was there really ever any doubt how this poll would turn out?

Hmm... this is "The Drive" from season six, right? If so, then it should definetly be on the list of my favorites, just forgot to include it.

Generally, the standalone episodes written by either Darin Morgan or Vince Gilligan are pretty much always good, the rest of the writers (including Chris Carter) are more of a hit-or-miss affair.

I also think that the show's quality started to suffer noticeably after the move to Los Angeles--suddenly almost every other episode seemed to be set in California, ultimately resulting in such bottom of the barrel episodes like "First Person Shooter" or "Fight Club" which is just appaling and has got to be the worst episode of all.

All this talk makes me want to go back and watch the show from the beginning.

I was a fanatic of the show in the beginning and as the whole conspiracy thing grew and grew(in what i thought was a convoluted mess) i lost interest in the show.Love the stand alone eps though and still like to catch certain ones from time to time.

Like I said, I missed the show during its broadcast run and just caught bits and pieces in syndication.

I really remember friends being disappointed when "this weeks episode" wasn't advancing the mythology.

I'm actually just kind of glad I'm not alone on this.

I do like that episode, but it might be the most blatant ripoff I've ever seen on TV.
Funny, I saw Ice as a great variation on and homage to The Thing. It was the very first episode I saw and remained my favorite throughout the nine year run. Felicity Huffman's being in it was a big plus. Almost as good was Eve.

I have to disagree with the almost universal opinion about Home. To me it was simply disgusting for the sake of being disgusting rather than creepy. One of the very worst in my opinion.

(I voted for standalone.)

The standalones are better simply because they retain credibility throughout the whole show

I own X-Files season one because it's self contained and pretty rocking

You know, I just watched Home again, and it has lost a bit of its charm but is still one of my faves. The dialogue between mulder and sculley is just classic.

"Find a man with a clean genetic makeup who doesn't mind being second guessed all the time and start pumping out the little uberscullies."

It's the second episode of the fourth season, and the first episode was a mythology episode. It was sooooo dumb. Bees and icepicks. Sigh.

As far the Ice goes, I remember at some point thinking that it was meant to imply that they were sent to investigate the circumstances of the film...which was a cool thought.

One episode not mentioned is "Triangle"...not necessarily for the story, but mostly for the way it was shot/edited (there are no shot changes except for commercial breaks until the very end of the episode).

^^ Ahh yes, Triangle, when they started to pump out gimmick episodes. On one side of the coin, this was was one of the better ones. On the other side of the gimmick coin you have X-cops.

Wasn't Triangle hyped to have Mulder & Scully kiss?

Yes, that was the big tease for that episode. It was also broadcast in 16:9 (I think the only episode of The X-Files shot/aired in that ratio).

Was that the one that came out aweful on the DVD?

No question for me but I figured it completely backwards.

I was a huge "X-Phile" during its run and my initial attraction to the show was due to the monster-of-the-week episodes. I loved 'em! But I remember reading the X-files boards throughout its run and most people liked the mythology episodes much more. They seemed to view the MOTW eps as momentum killers. I still like the monster eps much better, especially since the later seasons spiraled out of control (as has been mentioned before).

So anyway - count me surprised. Maybe the people on this board were more casual viewers?

Do they repeat that dialog? Because it's originally from Clyde Bruckman.

Clyde Bruckman and Humbug are my favorites along with some of the other one-offs here. The mytharc is ruined for me by the path the show took in the final seasons. Something like that is dependent on the outcome. This is why Lost is such a big risk. I love it and I love that the questions are unanswered, but if the show turns lame in the end it'll kill the whole concept. At least with the X-Files there are countless good stand-alones to watch. (And don't get me started on the finale of the Prisoner.)

Damn. I actually managed to mix it up completely. You are right, that dialogue is from "Clyde Bruckman" and what I really wanted to say about "Tithonus" is that it has a surprising follow-up and even an "explanation", if you will, for that bit of dialogue from "Clyde Bruckman". It's very subtle and easy to miss, but here it is, the way I see it:
Spoiler:
Towards the end of the episode, Scully has figured out that Fellig, the guy who takes pictures, is basically immortal. They are talking and he is explaining to her that it happened when there was an epidemic in New York many years ago and how had fever and basically managed to "see" Death who couln't take his life and took someone else instead and he was "left behind" to live forever. Later on in that conversation, it becomes obvious that he is hiding something from her and she thinks it's because he took her photograph and she is going to die. He tells her to "make her peace". Soon after another FBI agent shows up and fires a shot and the bullet goes through both Scully and Fellig, but the end result is that he who is immortal, finally gets killed and she is wounded but alive. Add in the way this last part is visually presented in the episode itself and to me this is a clear indication that now he has been taken instead of her and she is the new immortal. However, this, like many other things has never been mentioned again after this episode.

Just wanted to comment on something else that somebody said about "Triangle" being the start of gimmicky episodes. I wouldn't go that far, but it's true that at the beginning of season 6, "Triangle" and a couple of episodes that follow (such as the infamous "Dreamland" in two parts, no less, and "Ghosts that Stole Christmass") indeed are very silly and gimmicky so one can easily get that kind of impression. I do like "Triangle" from a technical execution standpoint, but as a story it's almost a complete bust. There is almost no story there at all, in fact; the whole episode revolves around audio-visual gimmicks and that's all it is.

Actually, seasons 5-9 were all shot in 16:9, but this episode is the only one that aired in 16:9 for SD viewers as well and still airs in 16:9 in syndication.

I prefered the alien conspiracy episodes, but was dissappointed that it was never resolved.

The monster episodes and what not were sometimes great, and sometimes too cheesy, but I liked them for the most part.

I know they first tried this gimmick in "Small Potatoes". It could be this ep as well, it's just that I'm not all that familiar with anything in season six or after.

I agree with an earlier post that said the MOW eps were a hit or miss thing. But to proclaim "Ice" as the best ever? Personally, "Kill Switch" was my fave (as else already mentioned). It is almost a precursor to The Matrix (who can forget Scully "knowing kung fu" ). The Gibson story, the action, the characters all in peak mode.

Another excellent one that just came to mind: Wet Wired (?), where Scully goes all paranoid and thinks Mulder is out to get her.

After all this talk I had to pop one in last night. Watched the Erlenmyer Flask. Season 1 finale.

I had been re-watching all the MOTW eps because my wife enjoyed them. I thought I would start the Myth-arc with her with this episode.

I Prefer the standalone episodes.

'Ice' was the first episode I ever watched during X-File's original run, it's still one of my favorite episodes. I only own the first season on DVD...I'm hoping for a price drop before I pick up the remaining seasons.
