And if anyone is in this boat, I recommend getting the movie collection. I made the mistake of getting The Gathering/In The Beginning as just a flipper disc, and now I'm finding out that it's damn hard to find some of the other stuff individually on DVD. Like Thirdspace.

Actually, it's impossible. As far as I know, only In the Beginning was ever released on DVD before the movie collection.

Well, that explains why I'm having such a damned hard time finding anything lese. I guess I have to double-dip on The Gathering/In The Beginning now.

So how many things would I have to buy to get everything on Babylon 5?

I would not worry about "The Lost Tales" as it was really bad. Seemed liked they were just out to make a fast buck, that is my take on the DVD.

On the plus side you get commentaries on The Gathering and In The Beginning which I don't believe were available on the initial release.

Well, I just finished season 5. Perfect finale. Getting this show on DVD was some of the best money I ever spent.
I still have a few things to watch... River of Souls, A Call to Arms, Crusade, Legend of the Rangers, and Lost Tales. I think I'm gonna read the books, too. I know a lot of this stuff isn't that great, so I'll probably wait a while to see some of it. Don't want to taint the finale.
Thanks to everyone who's been bumping this thread over the last few years, and keeping the show in the back of my mind!

Glad to hear it. Such a great show.

A few of the movies are good, a few are just OK. I liked the Lost Tales better than most of the movies.

I finally finished season 5 myself, what a special show. I now can appreciate when you guys talk about how you envy those starting the journey for the first time. A couple of quick questions:

1. Is it worth watching Crusade, or is it a weak spin-off?

2. S5 finale spoiler
Spoiler:
What was the purpose of intentionally blowing up Babylon 5 at the end?

Crusade was ok. I think when it was originally on it was shown out of order though

Yeah, I enjoy Crusade but you wouldn't really be missing much if you skipped it. Imagine if B5 had ended after 13 episodes.

Crusade was just a'right but I wouldn't have wanted to miss seeing it just to have a little bit more of that 'verse.

from a JMS interview:

B5's seemingly needless and useless destruction?

Neither needless nor useless. It was built cheapest of all the stations, and it takes a lot of money to maintain it. With trade routes now going around it, there isn't enough income to support it. So do you leave it intact, for others to occupy or raid for weapons systems and other systems too difficult to yank out? Or take it out, the same way we implode buildings now?

Spoiler:
The destruction of Babylon 5 was seen in a vision by the Centauri seer in the season one episode "Signs and Portents."

What's interesting, though, is that at the time the first season was in production, the station would have been destroyed under very different circumstances.
Spoiler:
With the station still under the command of Sinclair, it would have been destroyed by the Minbari warrior caste in the final episode of the series and set up a sequel series called "Babylon Prime."

As much as I loved the series, I have to say that the "River Of Souls" movie was a total borefest. I'm hoping the last movie in the set is more interesting because ROS seemed really pointless.

Heh, so here it is 10 years later, starting my first rewatch. I’m glad that it’s available via Amazon Prime now since it’s much more convenient for me than DVDs.
Anyone else considering a rewatch? Unfortunately they don’t have the movies available, just seasons 1-5.
Maybe I’ll make this a decade event. See you all in 2028!

I did a B5 re-watch last year. the good episodes hold up extremely well and the bad episodes just don't. I know it would be a crap load of extensive and expensive work but I wish they would remaster this series.

Too bad Prime doesn't have the movies, the series starts with the pilot movie, The Gathering. The proper viewing order:

Movie: The Gathering
Season 1
Season 2
Season 3
Movie: In the Beginning
1st 2 disks of Season 4
Movie: Thirdspace
Remainder of Season 4
Season 5 (all but the last episode)
Movie: River of Souls
Movie: Call to Arms
Season 5 (final episode)

re: Starting Babylon 5 for the first time...

Prime does have the expanded TNT version of The Gathering. Scroll left from S1E1... it's listed as S1E0.

Rewatching for the umpteenth time... already almost done with S1.
