The 50 Best Episodes of 2004

I remember that one of our Forum member (I believe it was Das Monkey) did the unthinkable and watched the entire TV season of 2002-2003 and came up with his best 50 dramatic episodes.

I'm paying a little homage to that thread and with the help of Thefutoncritic.com, I'm posting a list that the website came up with below. Also the list was compiled in January.

SPOILER WARNINGS - Please note that on some of the episodes recaps, there will be spoilers indicated.

What do you think? Agree/Disagree. What did they missed?

50-41

40-31

30-21

20-11

10-1

I haven't seen the vast majority of these shows, but I completely agree with #1. Easily the best episode I saw last year, and one of my favorites of any show.

Hmmm...
50-41: Only saw the Frasier finale out of all of them. Though I wish I had started on Scrubs the more I hear about it.
40-31: Finally getting into something I know, esp. Curb, South Park, and that ep of Chappelle...put it in the museum along with the Wayne Brady one.
30-21: Haven't seen a one of these, though House tempts me. I am a big fan of Hugh Laurie back through all of his BBC stuff.
20-11: Saw the Sopranos ep, none else...but there's Scrubs again...damn...
10-1: Couple more Sopranos that I saw, nothing else.

I thought I watched some TV, but I saw only 8 of these "Top 50," and 3 or 4 were from one series (Sopranos).

Okay, I looked, but I didn't see Boston Legal: Hired Guns.

For those who will remember....
Spoiler:
There is a hostage situation with Alan. Denny Crane finds out, and instantly puts his rifle together. Talks about how he was a sharpshooter "or was it a pilot" in the navy, and goes on to talk about how he just shoots trap now. Yells "pull" and the door is opened and he shoots the hostage taker. Calmly walks over to Alan with his rifle in hand and simply says, "Denny Crane".

I loved Lost and I love The Sopranos and many others mentioned in the list of 50, but this one episode was so incredibly good. Not only was there drama and excitement, but no other tv show ever had such a good release with the one liner at the end. I had to rewind and watch it several times and laughed my butt off. And in the final scene, we get wisdom of the ages...

Spoiler:
Something you, DEMOCRATS, will NEVER understand. Americans were “homesteaders” … we want a SAFE home … keep the money we make …and shoot bad guys. And, save the life of someone you love. Well, big day! Even for Denny Crane.”

If I could only watch one episode over and over, it would have to be this one.

When I first saw this thread, I had to immediately look who the poster was. I was so disappointed it wasn't das. That being said, this list is terrible. There's lots of great series listed, but with the exception of the 2 Lost selections, he chose horrible episodes.

I'll never understand why people so often choose to honor pilots of series and there's way too many pilots on that list. Once again, with the exception of Lost, most pilots are mediocre stepping stones from which a series will grow and flourish. For instance, the DH pilot was quite possibly the worst episode of the series. There were a couple dramatic moments in it that I really liked, but the comedy was really bad. Since then, they've better managed the balance of comedy and drama and it's rare that you'll find a moment as bad as some of the comedic moments in the pilot.

I will admit I liked the Jack and Bobby pilot, but it definitely wasn't the best episode of the series. Looking at the rest of the top 10, I've always felt Mamet is overrated and his work on the Shield was no different. There were so many good episodes of the Shield last year, it's a shame that the mediocre Mamet episode gets the recognition. OTOH, he did manage to put 2 of the best episodes of Angel on the list. The episode of SFU he chose had so much potential, but there were so many little things wrong with it, that it totally took me out of it emotionally. The season premiere of SFU was definitely the best of last season, basically because it was really the finale of the amazing season 3 and had little to do with the pathetic season 4. The other 3 HBO shows on the top 10 are shows that I've always had trouble getting into, so I don't really have any comments on them except I felt the first half of Sopranos last season was better than the second half.

The more I look at the list the more I find wrong with it. Why did he choose a second season ep of OC when season 1 was so much better? Why did he choose a season 1 ep of AD, when season 2 is so much better? Why did he choose one of the dumbest episodes of South Park from last year? There was exactly 1 episode of 24 last year that was really good and he didn't choose that one. He did choose a great episode of Scrubs, but then again they're all great. I'm used to having pretty different opinions than people, but this guy is like the bizarro version of me.

You too? It's definately not as well thought out as Das' list (I'm still bitter at your computer from croaking on you...or was it the hard drive? Whatever, GRRR! Is what I'm saying) but I am a sucker for lists like this so thanks to the OP for sharing.

This list is a bit wonky. But to each their own. As much as I enjoy Lost I wouldn't put that ep above The Wire's or The Shield's best. It's cool to see Angel placed so high. Can't wait to watch the eps again when my dvd set comes.

I can assure you that the anger and frustration I feel is beyond anything words could ever begin to describe. (It was a combination of TiVo drive failure and PC drive failure, the latter being the proverbial straw)

I'm happy to see "Touching Evil" (which I would buy in a minute) and "Rescue Me" eps on there.

I stopped watching Rescue Me after bout 5 episodes specifically because I liked it so much. The FX broadcast looked so terrible that I thought I'd gamble on it coming to DVD (and anamorphic) and see it then. Hopefully it does come out eventually.

And beign such a big fan of Lost I can't say I dislike that top 10!
