Exactly. If every sitcom on the air was excellent, I could buy the idea that there are even more excellent sitcoms out there that are being pushed out by reality TV. But if there's some great sitcom being pitched to a network, why don't they put it on in place of one of the crappy sitcoms they air now?

Sitcoms I've really enjoyed:

Arrested Development
Scrubs
Coupling
Sex and the City
Frasier (and Cheers with Diane)
Wings
Mash
The Black Adder

Not a lot, so, no, I don't miss the days of sitcoms. I watched a lot more sitcoms in the 70's and 80's, but seeing reruns makes me wonder why I liked them.

Is the Tivo mentality making us ignore sitcoms to the point that we never even START watching them in a season?
I don't know about that. A lot of people avoid shows like 24 and Alias because missing an episode means you have no idea what's going on. In fact, that's why Alias this season has mostly converted to storylines that are wrapped up in a single episode.

The most popular shows like CSI and Law & Order are all like this, the kind of thing that you can tune into, and not need to know what happened in the previous episode, just drop in, watch the show, and be done with it. This is exactly what sitcoms are usually like. The problem is that there just aren't any really good sitcoms out there anymore.
