Conan O' Brien/Tonight Show question....

Since Conan will be taking over the Tonight Show in a few years, will he have to relocate to LA? Also, wether he stays or goes, does he still stay with The Max Weinberg 7 or does he have to host with crappy Kevin Eubanks and his crappy band?

I'd assume He staysin New York unless he wants to move the show and he'll stay with Max Weinberg. That would deffinately be in his contract to choose who he does his show with.

I thought it was already said that he will relocate himself and his family to los angeles and the band will come along.

Los Angeles just proved a more viable location for the type of show he runs because everyone is already in Los Angeles and it's an easy trip to burbank after filming to plug whatever project. One of the many reasons why Leno got the tonight show instead of letterman (though the list to that goes on and on and on)

He'll move to LA. NBC likes having it in LA b/c you have more stars living there than in NY.

I have a feeling that Max won't come along, though.

I wish "The Tonight Show" would go back to its root and be back in NY when Conan takes over.

Personally, i couldn't care less what city he's in. Conan is Conan. I hope Max remains though.

I think the Max Weinberg is a great part of the show and I hope that continues. The Tonight Show used to be in New York, and I think it would be a bold move to keep it there. It would be an excellent statement to the studios. Although putting the show in Des Moines, IA would be even bolder...

Jack,

This is incorrect. Letterman was never asked about his preference as to where to do the Tonight Show until after the job had already been given to Jay Leno. NBC learned that Dave had been willing to move to LA, "because that's where Johnny did it", only after Peter Lasally contacted Dick Ebersol to try and pull the rug out from Leno at the last moment.

Two things

1) Throughout the 80s, Dave had a home in Southern CA (Malibu, I think) and there was never any question that if he became host of the Tonight show that he would do the show in LA.

2) The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien will be done from LA (actually Burbank) in the same production facilities that Carson used, and that Leno now uses.

Unless Conan improves over the next 5 years I don't think the New Tonight Show will be as enjoyable as the current Leno years. Of course it will never be like it was back when Carson was doing it or even during it's early years with the Steve Allan and the Jack Parr days. I'm too young to have seen the Pre-Carson years so I grew up with Carson as the Tonight show host. I have to admit that I watched the Carson Years more often than I do the Leno Years. I think in about 5 years I will only watch it very occasionally. Lately I've watched late night Sci-Fi Channel over any of the late night talk shows. I Guess I'll watch the Conan Tonight Show when he has guests that I absolutely have to see (which now a days are very few).

Conan is infinitely better than Leno, no matter what era Leno is in.

Conan would have to have a major drop in quality(funny) to end up at the same level as Leno....and I actually like and watch Leno, but Conan runs circles around Leno in bits, interviews, charisma, etc.

After tonight's ER, the announcer plugged Joan Embery's appearance on the Leno Show with "Johnny Carson's favorite animal expert"...

That's it guys, try to ride the sentimentality train..

It's been confirmed on the Springsteen boards that Max goes with Conan. Bruce is putting his quieter acoustic stuff on hold and pushing ahead with the full ESB stuff (CDs and touring) because it's the last go-round with the whole band.

On the lighter side, my wife and I now get to tell people we had the Tonight Show band (well, most of them) play at our wedding..........

I hope it stays in L.A.

The whole world does not revolve around the East Coast.

Interesting. I figured Max was one of those lifer East coasters and wouldn't leave. I'm glad to see him go w/ Conan, though.

I just want to remind everyone that all this is more than four years away.

In 2009, Max will be almost 60 years old. That's 60 years old!

He may not want to uproot his life at that age.
He may not want to continue drumming on TV after 15 years of it.

Or NBC, always seeking younger demographics, may not want Conan making jokes about how his senior citizen band leader is addicted to porn and hookers.

Of course not. Everyone knows "the west coast is the best coast"*.
