The Simpsons needs to be put to sleep.

I adore the classic episodes, and can watch them till the cows come home, but it went downhill after the "Who shot Mr Burns" saga. Aside from a couple of exceptions (like the episode where Homer thought Bart might be gay), the show is now dire.

I can recall an episode where Homer got his car clamped because he left it in a restricted zone while looking for a toilet. Several minutes seemed to be dedicated to him finding a lav, and relieving himself when he was victorious. This whole episode had to be THE most unfunny thing on TV EVER, and was an insult to the show. It was round about this time that I lost hope in the Simpsons, and haven't been a regular viewer since.

Matt Groening should be satisfied with the millions he's made, and put the show out of its misery - for all our sakes.

Umm, OK... I guess it's different because you say they have "simple senses of humor" and refer to their tastes as "mindless"... :lol:

I guess I just agree more with Charlie Goose: :thumbsup: Gave up on Friends a few seasons before the end (at the show where I caught myself thinking "I can't keep track of who's sleeping with whom..." :rolleyes: ), but I never questioned why it was still on the air; it was because a bunch of people whose tastes are different than mine (perfectly fine by me, just different) still loved it. If it's "what shows have jumped the shark or have passed their prime" (like someone suggested), that's a different question! :D

That explains the first few weeks of AI. Anything after that is utterly useless. elevator music sung by boring singers. They may occasionally display a singing talent, but between the vapid music and unbelievable amount of commercial interruptions, the show is tedious beyond description.

I think it is a common mistake for people to compare a show to itself. A below average Simpsons episode is still far better than most of the dreck listed in this very thread. Compare any Simpson's episode to the best episodes of "The Swan" and see what you think. And "The Swan II" might be what goes in the slot opened by a recently cancelled Simpsons.

Also, the episode you cite had some extremely funny moments, such as Homer's battle with the wheel boot, and the great throw-away quote, "Less chat, more splat."

From your critique it sounds like you only enjoyed the first few seasons, making me wonder why you are still watching 10 years later? -wink- No offense meant, I just hear a lot of "fashionable" Simpsons bashing from people who, when pressed, don't miss an episode. I can certainly understand wishing it was better. But hey, what show couldn't you say that about?

'House' can be pretty entertaining, but some of us may have come to these conclusions:
how long is it going to last?
every episode: some person will faint, or do something and then they are taken to the hospital. house's team will try to do something. he will break in and with a witty remark, but endearing sarcasim tell them that they are killing the patient. each episode, we learn a little more about House himself as he talks to the patient or family, but just how long can this last?
I've seen about 5 episodes I think there's been about 12?

"Why is ____________ still on the air" is a question that was first asked when the first TV knob was turned to the first station airing the first broadcast. You might as well ask why there are so many crappy books/movies/cars out there; the answer is Ted Sturgeon's Law, "90% of everything is crap". Also, you can fill that blank in with shows like Gilligan's Island, Gomer Pyle USMC, Sanford & Son, Three's Company, too many to list - shows that are fondly remembered today, but were Proof That There Was No More Room In TV Hell Anymore way back when. Bad shows are not a recent invention, and criticism of what's on the airwaves is not new either.

The problem seems worse today because 1) the networks go for cheap, meaning reality shows; 2) the networks realized that they can manipulate ratings for shows that are cheap and keep them on the air longer; 3) the networks realized that any publicity is good publicity; and 4) the networks have been bad for so long they look good by comparison. This is why Arrested Development struggles and The Simple Life returns; why According To Jim runs for years and Wonderfalls doesn't; why The Littlest Groom gets a shot but Miracles is shot down.

I'd like to think that the people here are a little smarter than the average viewer and have more of a discriminating palate, or else we wouldn't talk about shows we do and the way we do - we can see through the crud and we reward anything that breaks the mold or didn't fit in the first place. But our tastes are not what the networks are looking for. We rave about Lost, but did you know that Lloyd Braun, the ABC exec who greenlit the $12 million dollar pilot, got fired for doing so? We loved Firefly, but there's a lot of evidence that Fox bought it just to kill it. With actions like that, the only choice we slightly higher than average viewers here have is to ignore the tube completely and let the networks rot - or else pool up our money and buy our own network, post a sign that reads "If you think Will & Grace, Yes Dear and Married by America are great TV, keep walkin' - we don't want your kind" and make our own shows. The problem with your rant and others, is that you take the topic seriously. This was just supposed to be a fun thread to post about shows you used to like that have gone over the deep end, or just totally ignorant from the outset(AI). Nothing more. We know the tube is run by execs and not creative people. It is like pointing out that the sun is yellow. Just post a show, pretty simple concept.

90% of what's on Fox and the WB....and reality tv.


But I must say that Funniest Home Videos is hilarious....i guess i'm a sucker for a guy falling in a pond trying to hit a golf ball...cats falling off of stuff....old ladies losing their pants....performers falling off a stage...burley men screaming like little girls because of a spider....it never gets old! :lol:

My only complaint with the show is how they consistently manage to pick the three lamest videos on each episode for the prizes.

At the risk of offending Letterman fans (yes, all two of you ;)), I cannot see how this guy manages to draw the crowd and popularity he does. IMO he's about the unfunniest person on TV and the only person he seems to parody well is himself.
