G4/techtv no more (now just G4)

http://www.g4techtv.com/html/about/p...release_key=64

LOS ANGELES, CA, January 11, 2005 - G4, the only 24/7 television network dedicated to video games, screeches into 2005 with announcements of a new name, look and feel as well as two new series, "Formula D" and "Girls Gone Wired." Charles Hirschhorn, Founder and CEO of the network, announced the channel's official name as G4 - video game television - earlier today at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour. The name change and new network look and feel will take effect on February 15, 2005.

Pretty much dropping the whole Tech TV name and going the route of cars as well. ugh. Oh well. Good bye tech tv. You've been gone for a while. It's only fitting that your name die already as well.

It was only a matter of time. Oh well - I guess I'll get my tech info solely from the Internet now.

they should have just done this as soon as the channels merged instead of killing off the techtv programming slowly. thank you comcast for killing techtv with your stupid gay4 crap channel.

No problem here. Hopefully they'll focus more on video games now, like G4 used to (but it doesn't sound like it with "girls gone wired").

I'm not into PCs and other tech stuff, so I never wathced those shows, or much Tech TV period before the merger.

I like to catch a little X-play, judgement day and cinematech everyonce in a while though and wouldn't mind some more shows reviewing and previewing console games.

ust wait till they screw up X-play and then decide that they needed nothing from Tech Tv but just wanted to run them to the ground.

Judgement day has to be the worse rating game show around. G4 was never really much of a decent video game tv network anyways. They either were so focused on just one video game (LOFFA VICE CITY) and considering PC gaming is a big aspect to gaming, maybe your preference of non pc gaming, josh, accepted that. But considering that is like a sports network not covering football or baseball simply to focus on the other sports.

The network will still get worse and worse.

Damn. Read the title and thought the whole station was gone. It's dead to me, but would have been cooler if the whole thing went under.

I never understood the idea behind a TV show about video games - if I'm into video games, why would I watch a show about them, when I could just be playing my many unfinished games instead?

I too thought the headline meant the channel was gone- It should be. What a waste of channel capacity- I hope Dish drops it when the contract is up and replace it with another network- This is another case of a network that has lost it's identity.

Handwriting was on the wall about this one.

Take care Yoshi!

Icons and X-Play are the only two good shows on the network.

Pretty much. and even x-play is starting to sag with all the anti-adam ads on all the time.

Oh, I'll miss the tech tv booth at e3 this year.

I totally lost hope when they fired everyone for the second time, I guess this is just the nail in the coffin. Good luck Kevin & Sarah. I will just keep watching Leo on Call for Help.

I actually like Judgement Day more than X-play b/c the hosts are less annoying, and we get two reviews instead of one for each game, and the two guys tend to have vastly different tastes and as such they tend to do a good job of presented all the potential pros and cons of each game.

Don't think I'm saying the show (or network's great) I think all the shows on tech tv/G4 pretty much sucked. It's just the only option for TV game reviews and previews, which are a nice suppplement to magazines as you can see the games in action.

While I agree that sometimes Adam Sessler can be a bit spastic on X-play, I can think of few more obnoxious people on television than Tommy Tallarico. I actually like Victor Lucas alot, but Tommy makes that show almost unwatchable for me. I've also noticed a bit of an anti-Nintendo bias from Tommy. There are rumors that he had done the original soundtrack for Metroid Prime and had all his work removed, so maybe there's some bitterness behind that.

Count me in the Adam>Tommy camp as well. While Adam's schtick was more annoying in older X-Play episodes where they did more little "comedy" skits, lately they've been doing more reviews, which I find a LOT more tolerable than Judgement Day's. Like you said, Victor is pretty good, but it seems that practically every review on that show involves Victor trying to make a point while being constantly interrupted by Tommy, which gets old fast.

I agree. Like I said, I didn't "like" any of the shows, I just found JD more tolerable than X-play. At least Victor was good, whereas both the hosts are annoying on X-play. Plus, X-play seems more concerned with just making fun of games, rather than giving good reviews. And even though I can't stand Tommy Tallarico, I still like getting two peoples take on a game rather than just one review.

Tech TV was good
G4 was complete shit
G4/Tech TV was mostly shit
G4 is still shit... can't see things changing on that.

they should've just kept both channels - why absorb and destroy something better?

I agree that the idea of having two seperate reviewers is a good one, it just seems that (besides generally being obnoxious) Tallarico just tries to be contrary for no reason. Unlike music or even movies, good games generally similar marks from all publications, as do bad games and average ones, so while once and awhile I can see him and Lucas disagreeing, it seems way too often to count as a legitimate view point. As for Xplay, I'll admit that I actually find Adam and Morgan amusing for the most part so maybe I have a bias, but I can't really think of any reviews they've done that weren't right on the money. Yes, the reviews are jokey, but they cover all the relevant parts of the games, show tons of footage and are scored in a fair manner.

G4/Comcast weren't interested in TechTV or its content at all. They were interested in aquiring TechTV's distribution deals, which placed G4 in many more homes.
