what state do the Simpsons live?

I know that it never was revealed on the show (or was it?) and that Springfield can be in any state but i do remember that there was revealed info on the actual state the Simpsons really lived in, i forgot the state but it is in the South, and touches the ocean.

Mano 12-30-04 10:42 PM

As far as I can remember they have always only teased the actual location.

Mano 12-30-04 10:44 PM

If I had to guess I bet the model for Springfield would be the one in Illinois or some other midwestern state.

Mr. Salty 12-30-04 10:54 PM

It's near the mountains, dense forest, desert and ocean.

In other words, they have gone out of their to make it a place that doesn't exist.

Although Illinois does have a Shelbyville.

TheMadMonk 12-30-04 11:23 PM

Kentucky.

outer-edge 12-30-04 11:28 PM

There are multiple episodes that list the states they are not in or now allowed in, so it might be possible to narrow it down or see if all 50 states are named.

duff beer 12-31-04 12:49 AM

It's definitely in the southeastern quarter of the country.

vaporware 12-31-04 12:59 AM

I could have sworn there was an episode several years ago where they were traveling around the US. At the beginning of their trip they showed a US map and the dotted line showing their course. The starting point was in Illinois.

If I remember correctly, it was missouri in the original brodcast, and it was changed to kentucky for the reruns.

Anyway there is no one state, there can't be because Springfield's geographic surroundings can radically change between episodes.

IMRICKJAMES 12-31-04 01:55 AM

if you had to pick an actual place, which is impossible because the Simpsons Springfield has contradicted itself so many times during the show I'd say its modeled after Springfield, Oregon. If I remember correctly isn't Matt Groening from Oregon?? Plus, Springfield and Eugene, Oregon have a Springfield vs Shelbyville thing going on in real life.

But most likely the 'real' location is left purposely ambiguous

Me007gold 12-31-04 08:09 PM

actually Matt Greoening is from Maryland. Towson area i belive. i think he mentioned it on the season one dvd commentary.

my guess is that springfiend is in maryland. maryland has MOST of the features of springfield, minus the desert....

He might live there now, but he was born in Oregon, which is what the other poster was referring to.

As for the topic question, it is purposefully not any state in particular. Lots of people like to claim it for their state, though....

Artman 12-31-04 09:10 PM

There was an opening gag where they did a zoom-out from their couch to outer space. Anyone remember?

Scott27 12-31-04 09:21 PM

Well, the hurricane hitting the town in one episode would mean Springfield would have to be in a state along the Eastern seaboard, Gulf of Mexico, or West coast.

MasterCXtreme 12-31-04 09:54 PM

I remember one episode where Homer or another character returns a bottle to the Kwik-E-Mart for 10 cents... Michigan???

...probably not.

goLUCKY 12-31-04 10:38 PM

IMO, It's Illinois.

jaeufraser 12-31-04 10:44 PM

IMO it's nowhere. It's ambigious, and it's supposed to be that way. Recall the episode where Lisa points Springfield out on a map. Except, Bart walks in front of the camera just as her finger reaches the map so all we see is the back of Bart's head. So, in the end, we can suppose all day but there's no correct answer, as I'm sure it's not supposed to be in any specific location.

Dabaomb 01-01-05 12:00 AM

I always thought that it was Springfield, NJ

Cameron 01-01-05 12:04 AM

Behind the Laughter says Kentucky....thats the only time its been mentioned....where does that place capital city

Crazy Aoshi 01-01-05 01:47 AM

Well there is a statue on the Univeristy of Oregon campus that looks exactly like Jebediah Springfield.

duff beer 01-01-05 02:15 AM

Yes now i remember, it is definitely either Missouri or Kentucky.

Jeremy517 01-01-05 02:17 AM

It isn't either.

If you still don't believe me....

If you still insist it really is in a real state...

The section about "Behind the Laughter":

What's the explanation? This episode is not canon.
It portrays the show not as a cartoon created by Matt
Groening, but as a live-action sitcom originally written by
Homer and starring his own family. None of what happens is
part of the main Simpsons continuity... just like any
Halloween Special.

jeffkjoe 01-01-05 02:58 AM

There is one episode where Otto gets his drivers license revoked. As Selma is stamping it "VOID" you can freeze-frame the part where they do a close-up of Otto's driver's license, and the state abbreviation is a made-up concoction:

Springfield, OT, I believe it reads.

I was just about to mention that. IMO it is Springfield, OR. But the whole idea behind not knowing which state the Simpsons live in is a running gag which they'll probably reveal in the final episode of the show's run or not at all.

benedict 01-01-05 07:14 AM

In an alternate cartoon world there might be alternate cartoon states not 100% analogous with our own.

Big Boy Laroux 01-01-05 04:03 PM

also, one of the more recent episodes had a local volcano erupting... pretty sure there are no volcanos that close to any of the springfields in the US. closest one to a volcano would probably be Oregon.

Never been to California, huh?

duff beer 01-01-05 08:17 PM

Sure there are lots of crazy kooky things made so Springfield cannot be in any state, but if you disregard such on-the-spot plot devices like a volcano you can narrow it down on Kentucky, or Missouri.

duff beer 01-03-05 02:34 AM

I just watched Marge in Chains on Simpsons Season 4 and on the part when Snake steals the Kwik-E-Mart driving toward New Mexico, the freeway sign has Shelbyville, North Haverbrook (the delapitated town in Marge vs. the Monorail- victim to the fraud!)and New Mexico City reading 678 miles. So Springfield is anywhere 678 miles off the radius of New Mexico City.

Well it's definitely in the South somewhere.

fumanstan 01-03-05 10:03 AM

It's not in any particular state. It's rather silly trying to pinpoint it :)

devilshalo 01-03-05 11:11 AM

At the San Diego Comic Con last year, during the Simpson's panel with Matt and everyone else, they would not say.

Now we just have to figure out where New Mexico City is.

kantonburg 01-03-05 12:39 PM

It's Kentucky. I've rarely watched the Simpsons over the years but my college roommate was a huge fan. I remember watching an episode with him where I heard them mention Springfield was in Kentucky. I asked him if it's really in Kentucky and he said that was the first time he's ever heard them say it. I made a thread on here about it asking the same thing several years ago. I doubt it's even still available.

Jeremy517 01-03-05 12:45 PM

It isn't Kentucky, Misssouri, or ANY real state. Read these two posts in this very thread:

beencrazier 01-03-05 08:40 PM

Until reading this thread I'd always assumed it to be in Illinois. Now I know the error of my ways.

duff beer 01-04-05 12:22 AM

It is somewhere in the South.

For awhile I thought it was South Carolina, but I could also see it being either Tennessee or Kentucky. If you watch the intro where they show it from outer space, I could swear it looks like South Carolina, but it's so it quick that it's tough to tell.
