I was just about to mention that. IMO it is Springfield, OR. But the whole idea behind not knowing which state the Simpsons live in is a running gag which they'll probably reveal in the final episode of the show's run or not at all.

In an alternate cartoon world there might be alternate cartoon states not 100% analogous with our own.

also, one of the more recent episodes had a local volcano erupting... pretty sure there are no volcanos that close to any of the springfields in the US. closest one to a volcano would probably be Oregon.

Sure there are lots of crazy kooky things made so Springfield cannot be in any state, but if you disregard such on-the-spot plot devices like a volcano you can narrow it down on Kentucky, or Missouri.

I just watched Marge in Chains on Simpsons Season 4 and on the part when Snake steals the Kwik-E-Mart driving toward New Mexico, the freeway sign has Shelbyville, North Haverbrook (the delapitated town in Marge vs. the Monorail- victim to the fraud!)and New Mexico City reading 678 miles. So Springfield is anywhere 678 miles off the radius of New Mexico City.

Well it's definitely in the South somewhere.

fumanstan 01-03-05 10:03 AM

It's not in any particular state. It's rather silly trying to pinpoint it :)

At the San Diego Comic Con last year, during the Simpson's panel with Matt and everyone else, they would not say.

Now we just have to figure out where New Mexico City is.

It's Kentucky. I've rarely watched the Simpsons over the years but my college roommate was a huge fan. I remember watching an episode with him where I heard them mention Springfield was in Kentucky. I asked him if it's really in Kentucky and he said that was the first time he's ever heard them say it. I made a thread on here about it asking the same thing several years ago. I doubt it's even still available.

Jeremy517 01-03-05 12:45 PM

It isn't Kentucky, Misssouri, or ANY real state. Read these two posts in this very thread:

Until reading this thread I'd always assumed it to be in Illinois. Now I know the error of my ways.

It is somewhere in the South.

For awhile I thought it was South Carolina, but I could also see it being either Tennessee or Kentucky. If you watch the intro where they show it from outer space, I could swear it looks like South Carolina, but it's so it quick that it's tough to tell.

Guess I missed this

=[ "Behind The Laughter", and why it doesn't count ]========

In the first airing of [BABF19], "Behind The Laughter", the
narrator gave Springfield's location as northern Kentucky.
For the second and some later airings, this changed to
southern Missouri. But neither of these are admissible
locations for Springfield, for the many reasons listed later
in this document.

What's the explanation? This episode is not canon.
It portrays the show not as a cartoon created by Matt
Groening, but as a live-action sitcom originally written by
Homer and starring his own family. None of what happens is
part of the main Simpsons continuity... just like any
Halloween Special.
Personally i'm glad they did change it. I hope they never give it away.

dick_grayson 01-04-05 02:15 PM

I thought I had heard it was definately Springfield, VA. The mall looks exactly the same, too.

The Isotopes play in Albuquerque. Las Vegas is only 2 hours away from Albuquerque. But 678 miles will take you to Sturgis and beyond.

No, NT is Matt Groening and James L. Brooks' way of saying: "NOT TELLING"
