ah THIS is the ep my rant goes into.. not that other one where I was one date off and then blamed mike here for no good reason.. ..

cut paste rant from thread to here now:

First few eps I caught were pretty good.. errrr but this one was just brutal for me to watch due to the non-stop "talking it out".. I get they have to say what the are doing and so on.. errrrrrrrr but this ep at least it was: "....and now I'm looking at the blue thread, I will now compare it to see...."
"....ok now we check the tape for finger prints and see who it was that touched the tape..."
"....oh and palm print, lets run this and see who........"
The did that for almost 20+ min worth of lab time..

geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.. Who ever wrote that stuff needs to have a pen jammed into his hand a few time to remind him it's not all that interesting to just ramble on about doing stuff I'M WATCHING the guy do.. I felt like I was watching bad DVD commentary.. Ya know the sort, where the director just sits there telling ya what is going in his movie as if you are blind..

again, I know they sort of have to cover why this and that is being done.. Some how the other csi shows make it interesting to cover details..

OK my CBS affiliate pre-empted the end of the episode. Can someone tell me what happens when they start to question the boyfriend?

CBS cut off the end here too because of Arafat's death and it came back on right when they were showing the previews.

This show started off so well and has gone down hill pretty fast.

Agreed that this show is sub-par at best (and has been since the beginning, IMO) and last night's installment was no different.

It's too bad that CBS scrapped the idea of having CSI:NY being a character-driven show and sticking with the "forumula that works".

I think that was an ill-advised move by CBS to do that to many of its Eastern and Central time zone affiliates. Why didn't they just wait until the episode ended to make the announcement?

I have this feeling that CBS will make a public apology and reshow the episode this coming Saturday night and/or show it on one of Viacom's cable channels within the next week.

I complained on CBS' web site, and got the following reply:

-----------------------------------------------

Thank you for writing to CBS regarding CSI: NEW YORK.

Please be advised that Wednesday night's episode, "Outside Man", will be
repeated Friday night, November 12th, at 10:00pm Eastern time (9pm Central;
8pm Mountain; 10pm Pacific) in the slot where CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION
was originally scheduled.

Cordially,

Ray Faiola
CBS Audience Services

-----------------------------------------------------

So, watch those last minutes again (for the first time) on Friday night!

I totally agree. The characters on this version are the least-memorable of the three shows. This episode was slightly better than last week, but overall the show is really lacking something.

They fired the producer

CBS News Fires Producer Over Arafat Special Report
Friday November 12 10:11 PM ET

CBS News has fired the producer responsible for interrupting the last five minutes of a hit crime drama with a special report on the death of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat , a network source said on Friday.

Word of the dismissal came a day after CBS apologized to viewers for breaking into "CSI: NY," one of its top-rated shows, on Wednesday night.

"An overly aggressive CBS News producer jumped the gun with a report that should have been offered to local stations for their late news. We sincerely regret the error," the network said in a statement on Thursday.

The network, owned by Viacom Inc., declined comment on a report of the dismissal posted on the Web site of trade publication Broadcasting & Cable.

But a network source told Reuters that CBS fired the producer who decided to break into "CSI" with a report from "Up to the Minute" anchor Melissa McDermott.

According to the source, the producer failed to follow standard procedures that require a senior CBS News executive to be consulted before interrupting regular programming.

The fact Arafat already had been reported near death for several days also figured in the network's decision. The source said the producer disregarded explicit, advance instructions that breaking news of Arafat's death -- if it occurred during prime time -- was to be reported with a news "crawl" at the bottom of the screen.

"Arafat had been literally on his deathbed for a week. Everyone knew he was going to die. It was just a matter of when," the source said.

Neither of CBS' two biggest rivals -- NBC or ABC -- interrupted regular programming to report Arafat's death. NBC said it ran a crawl for affiliates in the Western states and Rockies, while leaving the story for local news in eastern and central time zones. ABC said it ran a crawl on the West Coast.

CBS News has been under intense scrutiny since veteran anchor Dan Rather ran a controversial report on President Bush 's military record based on documents whose authenticity came under fire.

you know, considering that breaking news was 10 minutes before most places local news, and that he'd been "dead" for a week, I agree it was stupid to interrupt the show
plus hadn't arafat been pretty irrelevant for the last year or two? he was blockaded into his compound

While I agree CBS overreacted I'm not quite sure the poor producer deserved to be canned. Oh well. Caught the last five minutes of the episode last night so I'm happy. Still enjoying the show but I agree, I wish they'd go back to being more character-driven.

I caught this last night and once again was not exactly captivated.
The characters continue to be dull and are not drawing me in.

If I have to leave the room to take a whiz or get a beer, I don't even bother to hit Pause.

Here's the problem: CBS News and CBS Entertainment are completely separate entities with just about NO management overlap. People forget that CBS Entertainment is a moneymaker for Viacom, while CBS News isn't; when CBS News interrrupted of the last five minutes of CSI: NY, it essentially interfered with a TV program seen by potentially HALF the US population in the Eastern and Central time zones. Small wonder why viewers complained loudly, CBS Entertainment was forced to reshow the episode last night, and the CBS News producer was fired.

This episode just plain stunk. The guy killed 5 people just because his girlfriend was moving to Albany with their kids? Huh? They nailed him by matching the perforations on bags? And I agree with DeadLamb - I could have done without the running dubbed commentary in the lab, too.

I was really pissed about this. Luckily I just happened to be watching it on Friday and was able to catch the last, what, three minutes? I'm glad they offered an apology but not sure if the guy deserved to get fired.

Overall the episode was kinda weak. Sometimes I just really don't buy the motive which is cruicial for such a horrific crime. Contrast this with the same weeks L&O SVU.

To be fair to the show, as a junkie of Forensic Files and other like shows on CourtTV... there's a bunch of real-life cases where people were caught by matching perforations on bags (or on duct tape), and there've been much stupider reasons that people have had for killing other people.

True, but they failed to show a reason why that particular character cared that much. They weren't even moving out of the state! He had a car! There was no real indication they were not getting along in the first place. If he had gone there to "change her mind" and ended up killing everyone, I could have dealt with it. But he planned to kill them all - for no real reason whatsoever.
