Very good episode. I hope that Berman realises that things are better without him being so involved.

He's still involved. All that talk of him being taken off the show was false, I believe.

check out the Drawn Together thread!

As for Enterprise, I thought Brent Spiner's appearance was going to be just another cheap stunt, but I have to admit the episode was good. Soong's a convincing villain and he reminded me of Lor.

Yeah, he still has the job of overseeing the overall production, but he is now no longer in charge of the writing staff. That falls to executive producer Manny Coto. Berman and Braga still have veto power over story ideas, but I doubt it's something they'd really exercise.

Btw, this is probably the most positive Enterprise thread in a while. I remember a period a year or so ago when I was basically the only positive voice and was accused of being a studio shill. That was fun. :)

Chew 11-01-04 05:58 AM

Yup, I'll jump on the bandwagon: that was pretty good. Now that the "stink" of Berman and Braga isn't popping up everywhere, the show seems to be coming out of a deep darkness.

Finally saw the episode and I enjoyed it. Loved how snarky Soong's character is - a nice change of pace for Spiner to be sure. Nice to see Hertzler as well (always nice to see some DS9 cast members hanging around).

Does anybody know if Enterprise got a full season order or if it's still in half-season limbo?

das Monkey 11-01-04 09:50 AM

This episode frightened and bewildered me. Not only did it not suck, but it was ... um ... something else? I want to say "good" but that can't be right, can it? I fear I'm stuck in a mirror universe. This is most disturbing ...

I hate to say this but this show sort of suck. Although it's an improvement but re-hashing old original star trek stories or any of the past shows in my opinion is not good. I'm really tired of these re-hash ideas and alter them a bit.

I'm pretty sure it has a full season order. They've already written scripts through at least Episode 12 and most likely past that and have already started production on Episode 11, so they would have had to know sooner.

Plus, UPN doesn't really have anything in development for midseason except the Missy Elliot reality show. It seems like this season UPN is giving all their shows a chance at surviving a whole season.

They have to. They probably don't have enough money to get any midseason replacements. I'm still shocked that UPN has held on this long.

Did anyone else's UPN do a spoiler bumper before coming back to the show from commercials? In the commercial break just before the Orions abduct crew members from Enterprise there was a 5 second bumper that said "Enterprise will continue...." at the bottom of the screen. The video showed people disappearing and Tucker saying that two crew members just disappeared from engineering. Very annoying... especially since the show then continued and we almost immediately see the exact same thing happen.

George1962 11-01-04 11:48 AM

yes my UPN here in Rochester did the same, very odd & annoying. But what a great episode with Song's sarcastic comments to the crew and the funny moments when the huge slaver guy was starting to collaspe. Great writing too when T'pol came across the other kidnapped Ensign and she didn't know his name. By far the best episode in the entire run of the series.

I think Manny Coto is doing a great job. I think he's found a nice middle ground between TOS and the B&B syndrome of humanity getting it's ass kicked every time until the very end when they win.

It happened here too. Hopefully it was just a network glitch.

riley_dude 11-01-04 03:11 PM

There was that whole episode that took place in the 90s on Voyager with no Eugenics war so anything can happen I guess.

I enjoyed the episode as well. There are a lot of people out there, including myself, that want good Trek and bitch because they havent been getting it but this is a step in the right direction.

Joe Molotov 11-01-04 03:59 PM

Wow, it's almost like they're making these episodes to appeal to Star Trek fans, of all people. WTF is going on here? ;)

Was that big guard WWE's Big Show? Certainly sounded like him. Is Enterprise going to bring more (Rock was in the 1st season).

Yeah, that was Big Show. Actually, the Rock was in the 6th Season of Voyager.

Superman07 11-02-04 09:48 AM

I finally managed to catch this last night. It was a pleasently surprising episode. I think I had a mentality to hate it because I thought it was going to be Brent Spiner as a gimick for ratings, but his character actually fit in very well. Seems odd how a guest character can have more background and use than the "main" characters (Reed, Mayweather, Hoshi)...

There were some aspects that I did not like.

1) Enterprise was getting beat on way too frequently and to easily for the plot. Maybe not easily because it's good how that ties into the low tech plot line.

2) Something about how Bakula acts is getting to me. Take the scene where he was talking to T'Pol in the cell. He was almost yelling as if it was the most urgent of situations. Don't get me wrong - I like Scott and I love Quantum Leap, but something's just off here.

3) Like you're really gonna dock with a ship (Klingon or not), if you haven't seen anybody on the screen...

4) For the first 20 or 30 minutes I didn't even think last weeks episode had happened. Even though I know I didn't miss a week I thought I had missed a week.

Also would have been good not to have a "To Be Continued..." at the end. Just leave the suspense for what it is. We can tell it's to be continued without you telling us.

I did enjoy Spiner a lot and there were some good jokes. Always good to see jokes about the chair (ala Trek movies). However, I really think they could have played with that for another 10 seconds or so. Could have been hilarious - maybe just me though.
