Well, there is a huge difference in having security to watch her and having security to protect her. They would probably keep a distance and didn't care when/if friends, etc. people visited her or she them. It's quite possible they wouldn't think it a big deal to mention even if she went directly into a English school, since they were never told to report on her, just to make sure no one snacths her up since she is a liability.

This is totally wrong and a false sterotype. It is totally possible to learn a language without a heavy accent anywhere in the world...and any language. Shoot, some Koreans in LA have been her 40 years and have accents thicker than the phone book while others I have met have been here for a year or two and have no trace of an accent.

Besides, just check out Dave's ESL cafe. Most English teachers in Korea (or at least a large portion) are native English speakers. Many schools wont even hire Asain Americans who have lived here their entire life.

But I agree with you that flying through Sydney makes no sense. I would have expected you to have to connect through Tokyo or maybe Shanghai, but I guess Soeul's airport is bigger than I thought.

It's not a false stereotype, it's my observation. I'm speaking from experience. My wife is Korean and hanging out with her family and friends it's quite obvious who learned English here and who learned English in Korea.

You really need to immerse yourself into an English speaking culture to entirely shed the accent, even moreso if it's your second language. And to support my point even more, Yoon-jin Kim became fluent by living in America and graduating from college here.

Northwest definitely flies Detroit to Seoul. I'm pretty sure there is service from New York, too. You have to look at a globe or calculate great circle distances. It changes the initial heading slightly, but the route really isn't much longer.

Daniel Dae Kim, the actor who plays Jin, is terrible at speaking Korean. I cringe all the time when he speaks. You can totally tell that Korean is not his first language.

I flew into Seattle when I left Pusan (layover in Kadena AFB ). And if Australia is so out of the way from Korea, why then, is it suggested to go to Australia or Japan on leave instead of coming back to the States - if its so far out of the way? I thought Australia was only a four hour flight from Seoul? Though it could be that Japan was only four hours.

Australia is closer to Seoul than the US; its just in a different direction, so if you're trying to go to US, going via Sydney is a huge detour, like going New York --> Los Angeles --> Miami instead of New York to Miami.

Japan is close. Tokyo is 783 miles from Seoul. Sydney is 5164, and Los Angeles is 5994.

Sydney to Los Angeles is 7488 miles, and I think approaching range limit of long-haul 747s.

Also, that is (as I also thought) a Willie Nelson song. From @ 1965, when he had short hair, was clean shaven and was making money mostly because people like Patsy Cline were recording his songs while his own records sold mainly to a small group of aficionados.

That was actually the first time I'd ever heard it. It's a wonderful song, kind of in the vein of Night Life and Funny How Time Slips Away (i.e., utterly and completely brilliant.)
