I'd rather see more product placements, "pop-up" ads and "sponsered by" stuff than commercials.

Ultimately, I think commercial, network, television will die off.

We'll probably have to pay for nearly everything we watch.

I wouldn't. I can skip over commercials. The pop-ups, particularly the ones with audio, are extremely annoying.

I don't know why advertisers don't advertise on DVRs. For example, sometimes when I pause one of my Replay-TVs, there is ad for some Replay-TV promotion. They could easily set up print-like ads for 3rd parties.

ER does this regularly. I have to switch frrom CSI the second the episode ends, skipping scenes from next week to catch start of ER.
That's because The Apprentice is scheduled to end at 9:59 EST every Thursday instead of 10:00.

I have no problem paying for HBO and Showtime. The networks can die out anytime now as far as I'm concerned. The commercial breaks didn't used to be nearly as bad as they are now. It gets worse every year. They overfed the golden goose so to speak and will end up killing it.

Any program that screws up the time gets pushed to the bottom of my SP list. That way if there's a conflict it's the first one to get dropped.

ER has been starting early for a lot more than just two years (I'd say at least five, probably longer). But I think it has always been one minute early, not two.

They do this for a reason. Now that Video on demand/TiVo systems are getting more popular, it's to keep people from watching on those tivo systems and watching it live. This way they secure your viewership for the paid commercials that is the life blood of Broadcast television.

Ad companies think you aren't watching, they don't pay stations as much to put the ad on the program. Something along those lines. They want you viewing it live, when it airs. All in an attempt to throw your tivo viewing a bit off.
I didn't watch tv at all until I got Tivo (well, less than an hour a week). What advertisers should do is make their ads more visual--as a Tivo subscriber, I SEE the ads in fast forward. They can get a quick message in to me, and if the ad is appealing enough, I might press play to watch it (I usually do this for movie ads or ads that look humorous) Or they could put a small written ad at the bottom of the screen that runs during the show. I think advertisers should work with PVRs rather than against them, but if they make it too hard, I'll go back to dvds or try a torrent of other viewing options.

Here's a DirecTV TIVO question that I will probably get the answer to next weekend, but I thought I'd ask it here.

Here's the scenario:

Let's say I have Desperate Housewives set to record from 8-9:02 PM CST (to account for the ABC overlap).

I have another program setup in my Season Pass Manager to record at 9-10 PM CST on a different channel.

If I'm not watching 'live' television at the time, will TIVO record both programs?

If you connect lines from your dish to both tuners, yes, it will. And you can watch live TV on a different channel before and after the two minute overlap.

But if you record something on both tuners from 8-9 and on both tuners from 9-10, you won't be able to pad either of the 8-9 shows.

Make sense?
