well, there have been other manufactured pop stars on SNL who've done a fine job of holding their own in the live spotlight... I don't watch SNL that often, but I remember seeing an ep a while back where Avril was on... she was singing that "I'm with you" song... and she was obviously actually singing... and it sounded damn good. I remember being impressed by her belting that song out.
That said, as a music engineer who's done live sound before (including some multimedia instances with a guide track)... this is probably what happened. First off, when a guide track is being used for vocals, a band (or at least the drummer) is getting a click track in their monitor mix to make sure the tempo stays locked with the parts where the guide vocal is supposed to accompany the live vocal. And some live artists prefer to actually not have any of the live mic in their mix (gee, i wonder why). Anyway, as has been said somebody cued the wrong guide track... the band realized what was going on and started playing along... so it isn't actually their fault. The best Ashley could do would've been to get up there and fake it but without starting the song on time, she probably had no idea where the band actually was, and didn't know how to come in. Regardless, if the band respected her at all as a musician or if it actually was HER band rather than a bunch of talented professional musicians hand-picked to make her look good, they probably would've done something to help the situtation. I think that they were laughing their asses off like most of the folks at home probably says a lot about what they think of her "music."
On a sidenote, pop-stars have the tightest bands. It's really a shame. Christina's is amazing, though at least she has the musical talent to merit it. Anyone ever seen part of a live N'Sync show? I caught some of their HBO special and was blown away (by the band, not the singers.) You seriously have to be a badass mofo to get a gig supporting one of the top pop artists.

This fits SNL perfectly!
SNL is real chickens**t when it comes to their choice of musical performers. They almost always go to whoevers popular at the moment. They're about as cutting edge as any top 40 radio station. Just another reason why the show is so lame.
At least they've finally supplied me with some laughs.

This statement just seemed too enticing, so I naively ignored your advice (I'm at work) and clicked on the link. After my head hit the desk and everyone wondered why I was shaking all over with laughter, I now realize I have no one to blame but myself.

I just thought of something: There's an improv group in NYC that watches SNL and quickly puts together a show for Sunday night that spoofs the SNL show skit-for-skit. They MUST have done something on Ashlee. I'll see if I can find some info on that...

Just heard about Simpson. Is this really a big deal? I figured that all performances on SNL were lip-synched.

This chick don't even know the name of her band
She lip-synched and now she wants them all canned
They played the wrong song what hell was that dance
Had to blame someone so why not blame the band
When she's on stage she don't need a mic
But Live from New York it's Saturday Night
"What up America my sister's mad hot
I'm living proof platinum albums can be bought"
She scored a big hit with Pieces of Me
Now a bigger joke than Milli Vanilli
Seemed like the right time to throw a hodown
Just like Sinead she'll never live it down

Why do people compare her to Sinnead? Sinnead didn't screw anything up. She went on there to make a political statement and she did exactly what she set out to do. Ashlee wouldn't know a true political statement if it hit her on her beak. Her accomplishment was screwing up, embarrassing herself, and then not being able to play it off in any sort of professional or clever way.

Anyone remember many years ago on one of the first MTV VMAs when Poison started to play their new single, except CC Devile was so fucked up, he started playing a different song? The rest of the band stopped playing the right song and played along with CC. It was awkward and embarrassing, but the band played on.
