Is there any honor in THE BIGGEST LOSER?
Based on the title alone,
this sounds like another cheesy reality show.
But the concept, of having 12 people work hard to shed the pounds, sounds kinda like a noble premise to me.
I dunno,
Do you think the show's premise is respectable, or do you think it's pure exploitation?

Like any reality show, its probabaly pure exploitation.
I heard a sound bite and one of the contestants was talking about people eating doughnuts, etc.
I don't know if the show will be providing all kinds of foods and trying to get them to not eat it.
If this was on a channel like Discovery or TLC, I would be easier to convince its respectable.
But, being on a major network and being hyped up so much, I have to say the network probably isn't looking out for the best interest of each person.
But, until it airs, no one can actually say.

I could tell it was exploitation when the commercial showed one person exercising, and when he jumped, the show added the comical *THUD* and shook the camera like it was an earthquake. Classy.

If exploitation wasn't the primary focus, this wouldn't be on the air... at least not on network prime time. However, unlike something like Average Joe there actually is some good being done as an end result. I do like that the focus isn't on plastic surgery like the other makeover type shows.

I have this in the Tivo, haven't watched it yet. I was mainly interested in watching this show because I always thought a weight-loss show would be a great reality show. I remember once on "Extreme Makeover" they had three people who all had to lose about 30 pounds before they could have the plastic surgery. They all lived together, struggled on the diet and did an exercise program. I found that process much more interesting than the standard plastic surgery makeovers. Anyone can go under the knife, but it requires a lot more discipline and hard work to re-sculpt your body through diet and exercise.

Honor, perhaps not. Humor, most definitely. Not in the "LOL FATTY" sense, but in the way the show is edited. First off, you have the female trainer who is really putting the red team through their paces, yelling at them, trying to motivate them, and then all of a sudden, you cut to... the male trainer, literally sitting around a pond with the blue team getting to know the team members.
It sucked that people were upset with Maurice (the fattest guy on the show) for "only" losing 13 pounds in the first week. Sheesh. Even the people with the lowest amount of weight lost per week were at the high end of what might be considered a healthy weekly weight loss. I'm really looking forward to seeing the before & after pictures of the finalist at the end of the season.

I hated that one lady on the red team... the one who whined about everything throughout the show, then had the nerve to give the older guy crap because he was torn up about having to vote a teammate off.
I wonder how are they going to handle the inbalance between the teams next week. With one less person the blue team will probably be forever screwed unless they find a way to even it out.

I watched this last night and thought it was a pretty good show. Not as exploitive as the promos led me to believe, and I really found myself rooting for the contestants. I'm glad I heard wrong about the "ambush" angle.
I'll admit that I blanched a bit when they revealed that both diets were "low carb" (
). Of the two trainers, I prefer the guy's methods to the girl's.
The elimination element is a little questionable...on the other hand the girl eliminated last night lost 15 more pounds since leaving the show, and looked pretty good in the picture they showed of her.
So hopefully the show is enpowering, not only to the eliminated contestants but to the audience as well.

I might give it another week or two. I laughed that instead of their torch being put out, the light in their personal ice-box went out. Silly.

I believe the weight loss should be a PERCENTAGE BASIS...Of course a 167 pound woman is not going to lose 22 pounds in one week like some guy who's 300 lbs...This is VERY unfair to the lower weighted people...

I think getting rid of the "overweight" versus the "obese" is a good stategy. The "overweight" people only have so much to lose, while the "obese" have a lot they can get rid of in total.
I wasn't expecting much of this show, but my wife wanted to watch, and it actually was pretty decent. Gonna set up a Tivo Season Pass.
