Firepower in the HBO arsenal

Tue Sep 28, 6:26 AM ET Entertainment - USATODAY.com

By Gary Levin, USA TODAY

HBO may never repeat last season's Emmy-dominating strength, but it's not going to stop trying. Here's a look at what's ahead.

December 2004

Life and Death of Peter Sellers, a biopic starring Geoffrey Rush and Charlize Theron.

2005

Early in the year: Lackawanna Blues, a segregation-era movie about tenants in a boardinghouse, starring Liev Schreiber, Jimmy Smits and Louis Gossett Jr.

Dirty War, a movie exploring the consequences of a "dirty bomb" attack on London.

January: Carnivale, the second season of the Dust Bowl drama.

Unscripted, a new comedy series about aspiring actors, produced by George Clooney (news).

March: Deadwood, the second season of the revisionist Western.

Entourage, the second season of the comedy about a Hollywood actor and his posse.

Spring: Empire Falls, miniseries based on the Pulitzer-winning novel. With Paul Newman, Ed Harris (news) and Helen Hunt.

Warm Springs, a movie about young FDR with Kenneth Branagh (news), Cynthia Nixon and Kathy Bates (news).

June: Big Love, a new drama with Bill Paxton as a Utah polygamist.

Six Feet Under, the fifth season of the funeral-home drama. (May be held until fall.)

September: Curb Your Enthusiasm, the fifth season of Larry David's improvised comedy.

Rome, miniseries about the building of the Roman Empire.

2006

Early in the year: The Sopranos, the Mob drama's sixth and final season.

A summary of returning shows next year!

Chris

So glad to hear Deadwood was returning. I figured it would be but you can never be to sure. It's the best show on tv since Soprano's season 1 & 2 even tho 5 was good imo.

I still need to see the first seasons of Deadwood and Entourage. Can't wait for more Curb Your Enthusiasm, and that Rome miniseries looks interesting.

I hope not! (And I hope that doesn't delay the Season 3 DVD)

Deadwood rules. I can't wait.

I hope HBO re-airs the first season again so that I can tape it, since I've worn out my original tapes from viewing over and over.

Looking forward to Entourage and Deadwood. I am hoping Entourage will have a longer 2nd season.

Deadwood seems like the type of show that was just made to be watched on DVD. Can't wait for that eventual release, although I can wait to pay the exceptionally high price that HBO usually charges for their one-hour dramatic shows on DVD.

FantasticVSDoom, I enjoyed Carnivale. It wasn't my all-time favorite show or anything, but I thought it was interesting and was definitely building momentum. Looking forward to seeing what they do with season 2.

I'm surprised to see CYE back for a fifth season. For some reason I thought Larry David was getting bored with it.

Carnivale was a love-it-or-hate-it show. It was very slow moving and character based with a lot of mystery to it. Some people found the mysteriousness to be pretensious crap, others found it tantalizing and mood-setting. Personally, I loved it.

I had Tivo'd Deadwood when it first aired but never watched it until now. I just finished watching them all since I've been home with the baby. It was cool to watch during those 6 a.m feedings. I went back and read all the threads and I'm really hooked it. I think it is definitely HBO's best show now. I hope it gets released on DVD soon.

I can't believe we have to wait so long for new episodes of CYE. Who does Larry David think he is, David Chase?

FYI Carnivalle's first season is being reaired starting October 9th on HBO2. I just got HBO so this is my chance to catch this show. I hope they reair Deadwood as I caught it half way and would love to see the first half of the season.

So Deadwood and Entourage are both coming back in March? That's awesome and makes it easy for me to cancel HBO until then.

Big Love sounds interesting too.

I've never seen Deadwood, hadn't heard of it until it was halfway through the season but it sounds great...anyone know if the DVDs would come out before March? Maybe they'll reshow the first season in order before March?

Anybody have any more information on Rome? An HBO style historical epic could be very cool.

Throw in Carnivale and HBO is keeping this guy happy for another year.
