If I'm ever in trouble with the local authorities, I'll remember the "I've got a plane to catch" manuever and just walk out. If Colin's taxi had made it all the way without the blowout, would he still have tried to pay him $50?

What is the deal with the Moms and taxis? Not that it really matters though, since after every event with a taxi, there's immediately a condition that catches them up to the group. And the whole show, they're moaning, "We're in last place again" over and over, yet at the pit stop when they come in fourth out of five, they're like, "We can do it, we can win this race." Ahhhh, sorry, but not likely ladies.

Not that I wanted it to happen to them, but I thought it would have been funny if Chip & Kim came in last and Phil tells them to hand over their money.

The stress of travel leads one Team member to say to the other, "I want a different relationship."
I was expecting to hear this from Christie or Nicole, but didn't hear this from anyone. Did I miss it or was it even in the episode?

Static Cling 08-25-04 08:10 AM

Colin should just change his name to "Ugly American" and get it over with. "I'm in a RACE!" *stomps feet and fumes* Like these guys give two craps about his race. Not that it would've been the first thing on my mind if I were him, but he could've done a quick once-around inspection of the car before he left the pit stop and seen the donut. Poor Christie.

Chip's vague karmic theory about his money annoys me just as much as anyone else's "race spirituality." "It's because I put out into the world... that's why it's okay that I stiffed the last cab driver." Riiight.

Re: next episode...
Spoiler:
I felt dirty watching the twins flutter their eyelashes for cash during the next-week-promo. And I burst out laughing about the hair-shaving fast-forward when they announced it.

taa455 08-25-04 08:15 AM

With all the emphasis on money this week, it was funny to see the twins pull out their HUGE wad of cash at the end. How is it possible for them to have so much while the other teams seem to all be broke?

silentbob007 08-25-04 08:21 AM

The "different relationship" line was muttered by Colin when he was throwing his hissy fit about Christie not supoorting him.

If I were Christie, I'd have it in my mind to dump Colin's butt after I won the million. I have a feeling if he weren't in front of a camera he'd be even worse. She needs to live with a little less stress. There are much better guys out there for a girl like her. Geesh.

I tend to agree. If Colin can keep his anger in check, I think they would be really hard to beat. I think there are times when standing tough is called for and times where it isn't. That was not a time - not in a 3rd world country where you don't know what their system of justice is like. Frankly, Colin was correct - the cab driver clearly did not deserve the $100. I don't know if I would only give $50 though.

Heck, without that blowup, the first half of that race was unimportant - just filler since the producers staged it so they all arrive at the offshore hotel at the same time, which was lame.

First time (besides when the moms were stripped of their money) where money appeared to be a factor. Been waiting to see that. It will be interesting to see the twins flirt their way through the next leg.

icondude 08-25-04 08:35 AM

I think I learned why so many cab drivers get shot on the job.

Will be nice to see if the twins flash their boobs for cash.

I was kind of wishing that Chip & Kim would come in last so when they were asked for all their money, they wouldn't have any to give. Kind of like a HA-HA to the producers. Otherwise I like Chip & Kim.

The twins did the right thing by doing the skydiving, I doubt that they could drive any better than the Bowling Moms (women drivers in autocross, right!).

Colin shouldn't have been pissed for paying $100 for a cab ride that would have cost him $100 from any other cab driver since it really wasn't his money and I figure that's why they gave them $200 in the first place.

That's a question I've had. Is the money given at the start of each leg based on what the producers think will be "just enough" to make it through that leg? If Colin had money left over from previous legs and the "just enough" applies, I don't see why he was getting all worked up.

As far as we know, all of those references could be from an interview that was taken before the race. How do you know that they are even talking about God during the race?

By the looks of the wads of cash the Twins were laying out at the end, they get more than enough. Which may be the reason for Chip's generosity, too. But by the looks of this leg, towards the end of the race, the excess margin is getting slimmer and that $20 tip doesn't sound like such a good idea. Since they're starting the next leg with just the money given to them, I'm sure Chip's going to be less generous.

Ah, that's why I didn't catch it because he had sooooo much reason to say that to her. -ohbfrank-

Good episode.

Colin acted like an a$$.
He should have checked the cab tires before they left.
I would have noticed a doughnut instead of a real tire.
After the cabbie called the police he should have just given him the $100 right then.

Even worse than his airport tantrum, was the way he acted when he got the flat and the Bowling Mom's stopped to help him.
He never "asked" them for their spare tire he just demanded it.
I wonder if the situation was reversed what Colin would do ?

The Bowling Mom's will be the next to go. They have been at the back of the pack almost every show.

I'm still rooting for the Twins. They are dumb as hell but cute.
Let's hope they get desperate for money next episode. ;)

Note to self: Never go to Africa

cdollaz 08-25-04 09:17 AM

I think that Colin was right in fighting the cab driver. They had 2-3 hours to kill so why not. He just went about it the wrong way. Getting beligerent is not going to get you anywhere. And browbeating Christie in front of the other teams was just wrong and inexcusable.

Everybody is bitching at Nicole for being tight with the dough, but obviously money can be an issue in this race (right Chip?). She is right for asking Brandon to not spend their money loosely. Brandon is just a non-confrontational wuss. All of Chip's money philosophy crap at the beginning of the episode almost came back to bite him in the ass.

I thought Brandon pulled another lame move this week when he joined Chip in dogging Nicole. That's pretty lame. Even if I disagreed with my wife, if someone else started ragging on her, I would immediately take up for her, not join in. He needs a little backbone. I can't understand how any woman can be with a man that will not stand up for them.

I can't wait for next week's fast forward. I love when they throw in oddball stuff like that.

Um, because you clearly see them in the middle of the race making the comments.

taa455 08-25-04 09:56 AM

Why fight over 50 bucks? It's stupid. It's not even his money. Everyone else has already paid $100.

shaggybrown 08-25-04 09:59 AM

I'd like to see Colin try to stiff these Africans.

Um, no. Usually it is voice-overs. Those comments could have been made at anytime and inserted in at that time.

Definitely agreed. It wasn't the time or place, and it wouldn't have been worth the effort even if he'd saved the $50. As much as the cab driver was in the wrong, sometimes you have to let that shit go.

And you'd think by now, they know the race to the pitstop is almost always determined more by who completes the roadblocks and detours first, not who gets to the airport 5 minutes faster.

Most of the time I hear it, it comes either during the race or at the pitstops immediately following each leg. Maybe a few are made before the race started, I don't know. It's not like I'm taking notes or anything.

I'm not sure why you're choosing now to make these comments, as people have been picking on those two since the first episode. Frankly, I don't even mind them all that much.

I do not mind it either. I just find it funny that people are constantly bitching about their God-talk, but at the most it is once per episode and even then, we are not even sure that they said it at that point in time. They could easily have said all of this in a pre-race interview and then the editors pull it out to use each episode. BTW for those of you who may be confused, the editors are also responsible for the angelic music that accompanies during these moments. It doesn't just ascend from heaven when Brandon speaks.

It was dark outside when they left. I don't see how he could have checked unless he had a flashlight. It's easy to say that you would have checked now but at the time and place I doubt I would have either.

Note to self: If ever in thirld world country, check tires of cab before getting in.

Money becomes very important at the end of the race as well. In past seasons you'd see the two remaining teams tossing money everywhere to get cab drivers to go faster, for people's help, etc.

Good point. It's not only going to get you through the current legs, but may help you get ahead at the end.

I'm surprised nobody tried to slip the desk clerk $20 to let them go up to the helipad. I don't know if it would have made a difference in the grand scheme of things -- the boats probably wouldn't have been available until the morning, and the sky-diving/off-roading definitely wouldn't have -- but it could have bought somebody at least a little time.

BDB 08-25-04 12:51 PM

I think the Burj-al Arab hotel looked sweet, as far as I know its the only 7 star hotel in the world.

It's on its own island, they have Maybach Limos

He did have a flashlight, he was wearing it on his head when changing the tire.
