I'll echo others here and say that Babylon 5 and Farscape are fantastic and completely worth buying on dvd if you can't catch them in order in syndication.
I also love genre shows, and Buffy, Angel and Xena are by far my favorites.
Shows that were fantastic but killed before their time include Odyssey 5 and Firefly.
I also loved the original Star Trek and ST: TNG, but never cared for DS9 or Voyager, not to mention the horrid Enterprise.
I liked Jeremiah season one, but didn't think it was worth the cost of premium stations to see season 2, so I'm waiting for dvds. Likewise, I plan on watching Carnivale when it is released to dvd.
Oh, and if you don't mind a bit of teen angst with your sci fi, I also really enjoyed Roswell.

The mini-series, on the other hand, is pretty low budget all around. The first one was certainly worth watching, if only to compare to the movie. The second one bored me, but was still watchable.
Not exactly ringing endorsements of all three, as they all have their positives and negatives.

Hello all!! I am a newbie here as well but a long time lurker! I will echo the majority opinions in this thread and give a big thumbs up to Babylon 5 and Farscape. Just do a search here on B5 and you will find volumes and volumes of threads with high praise for the show! Farscape is just freakin awesome!! My best friend got me hooked on the show when the first season was originally wrapping up on the SCIFI channel! Ben Browder who plays John Crichton is just a pleasure to watch. This is a very quirky show and can be a bit much to new viewers but stick with it and you will be greatly rewarded! I have all the episodes on dvd and they sit in a place of high honor on my shelves! I also recommend Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Buffy is great especially in the early seasons. Have fun picking out your new series to watch and enjoy!

more on Doctor Who...
Amazon.com is selling off alot of the Doctor Who stories on VHS Video for $4.95 each with free shipping. Even some of the double tape sets are $4.95! I know this is the DVD forum, but at this time they are only releasing about 8 Doctor Who stories on DVD a year and with over 150 stories (making up over 700 episodes) it will be a long time before we see some of these stories on DVD, so if you want to see them I suggest picking up these VHS Tapes before they sell out. Some of the Doctor Who stories that sold out on VHS are going for over $50 on ebay now, so pick them up while you still can.
I suggest these $4.95 classics...
Keys of Marinus
Time Meddler
War Machines
War Games
The Mutants
Colony in Space
Frontier in Space

I picked up 3 double-tapes.
Time to dust off the VCR.
