I haven't been this upset since Arsenio Hall was canceled when I was in high school.
|
I don't think Kilborn was too bad. I enjoyed his show when it started awhilea go. But he was getting pretty drowned by Conan. I'd be interested to see where he goes from here.
|
I just saw on CNN that there is "buzz" that they may go with a woman and the name at the top of the list is Amy Sedaris.
It was odd, though, because they all said how great she would be and that she was the perfect New York kind of person and yet I would think CBS would want to keep the Late Late Show in LA to get the Hollywood guests. There is already too much in NYC. Conan and Stewart are always getting Letterman's guests a day or so later as it is. Amy would be great, I think they also said Worldwide Pants is producing some new Strangers with Candy project and Dave clearly loves Amy. She'd be great, but would she go to LA?I also think celebrities really like her. Let's face it, other than a few people, and models Kilborn met at the Playboy mansion, there weren't a lot of big name celebs who wanted to even go on his show. One of the panelists mentioned Tina Fey, but I think she has a lot going for her in movies now to try and do a late night talk show. Bonnie Hunt would be good too if they really want a woman, but, again, she makes plenty of movies when she's free, so I'm not sure she'd want to do it. But she does live in LA and is also very good friends with Letterman. So, what do you think of the Late Late Show with Amy Sedaris AND, if it happens, should it be in LA or NYC? |
I'd love to see it coming out of LA, but with Kimmel out here now i wouldn't care as much as i would have a couple years ago.
|
I find it hard to believe anybody could actually watch this guy. I don't know anything about how well he did on the Daily Show, because I never had a chance to see him in that spot. Everyone seems to agree that he was good on that show. But he absolutely sucked on the Late Late show. I tried watching it a couple of times when Conan was doing a rerun and I couldn't finish one episode. I have NO DOUBT that John Stewart could do a better job than that.
If they put Conan and Stewart on CBS, I think Jay would need to start worrying a little. Jay has a loyal fanbase but he's not as funny as either of these 2 guys. |
Originally posted by dolphinboy So, what do you think of the Late Late Show with Amy Sedaris AND, if it happens, should it be in LA or NYC? I agree with you that is should definitely be an LA show. LA is the place to be for these types of shows and CBS would be shooting them self in the foot by limiting their two late shows to just NY guests. I don't know if Tina Fey could hack it. Co-hosting a 5-10 minute heavily scripted segment once a week doesn't prove she has what it takes. She has been a write on SNL for some time though, so perhaps some insiders know her work and think she is capable. Bonnie Hunt could work. Not as a 'good show' by my standards, but for a ratings move. A show headed by Hunt would be like the Rosie show, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, if they want to counter-program to Conan's audience and go after older/female viewers. I don't know how compatible that would be with Dave's leadin audience and Kilborn's current audience wouldn't stick around either. |
Tina Fey has a background in improv, so she may be a decent choice, but I'd definately want Amy Sedaris more as her appearances on Conan/Letterman are always great.

Originally posted by wmansir Interesting. Sedaris is funny, but I don't know if she has the stamina to do an hour long show 4-5 times a week. I haven't seen enough of her, especially outside of a scripted environment, to know if she can think on her feet and get out that much show. I don't know if Tina Fey could hack it. Amy has the stamina, but she's really quirky, so I wonder if an audience that might tune in to watch her might grow tired of her stories about her rabbit and her imaginary boyfriend. I think if Dave gives her the right producer she'd be great. She's got a pipeline of funny friends like Steven Colbert who'd probably be able to help her assemble some great writers. Tina Fey would just be hot. And there's nothing wrong with just being hot. |
Bring Back Arsenio!

Thank God....i can't stand that smarmy no-talent smug asshat.....I have never understood why he has a show.

I had read that Kilborn's last day is Aug. 27th.

If you had to make a list of people you'd like to see fill the job, what would it look like?
My list... Conan O'Brien Jon Stewart Bill Maher Dave Chappelle Drew Carey |
My list:
1. Amy Sedaris 2. Bonnie Hunt |
My uncle works on the show, he said Craiggers asked for more money, they showed him his ratings were lower than Conan's. They said, no....Craiggers got mad and basically quit.
|
I know it's difficult to do since most celebrities live in LA or NY, but why not try a late night show in some place like Chicago, Las Vegas, or Miami? The show would have a completely different feel from the others and a different line-up of guests.
They could also take a "Wheel of Fortune" approach, by having tapings on a regular basis in LA or NY, but be on the road once or twice a month with week long stops in other cities. |
I can't believe no one has mentioned Norm MacDonald. Letterman has more pull than most of you think. Its his company that produces the show. Norm has always been one of Dave's favorites. I still doubt it'll happen, but it would be great.
-No way of Conan coming, stop dreaming -Stewart is a possiblility because viacom owns cbs and comedy central, but I doubt it. -Solaris is a good possiblility, but I couldn't see it being anywhere but NY, and the show should be in LA -Fey has a contract at NBC for SNL, NBC isn't going to let her leave |
Originally posted by SPiRAL My uncle works on the show, he said Craiggers asked for more money, they showed him his ratings were lower than Conan's. They said, no....Craiggers got mad and basically quit. He asked for more money? He was lucky he wasn't working at an In and Out Burger. If they knew he wanted more and he might quit, without even, say, Dave placing a call to Craiggers to see if he could talk him into staying or staying till they got a new host, you see just how much they've realized he was a mistake in the first place. CBS is gonna wanna make a splash, so they might be able dent Leno and Conan's ratings with the attention. I think Stewart would make the biggest splash. Conan would only because of the leaving NBC drama. If they go with Amy or Bonnie, CBS will push the whole first woman host since it looked liked Rivers was in line for Carson's gig. Do contracts mean much? These people find ways to deal with things like that. If Conan was offered the job, for example, and he'd only take it if he was promised Letterman's job in about 5 years, wouldn't NBC look bad making him stay when The Tonight Show and Leno will be there till he drops dead on the desk? Conan's fans would be mad, Conan would be mad, so why deal why all of that? I think he could get out of it if they wanted him. I still think they want to "explode" this whole idea of a female host. Even if it's Amy and she turns out not so good, they'll still get a bump and they can go for Stewart or Conan later if they want a sure thing. I love Norm, but he rubs a lot of people the wrong way. You can't have him talking with Kelly Preston and have him ask, "So, how big is John Travolta's C*ck?" |
-Solaris is a good possiblility, but I couldn't see it being anywhere but NY, and the show should be in LA It's CBS so I can see them going for the older viewers with Tarkovsky, but it's late at night so they might want to skew younger with Soderbergh's hip factor and Clooney for the female demo. |
How about Jenny McCarthy?
As unlikely as that is, I bet her name at least comes up in the meetings they have. She's hot, men generally stay up later, she's funny, and she's already in LA not really locked into anything. Reason enough where she'll make the first list. But, if it's a woman, I'd have to give the edge to Bonnie Hunt. Her shows are always cancelled and, while she makes plenty of movies, they aren't big star roles and this gig would allow her to stay in LA and make at least 4 million a year. Amy would be great, but I don't see her as an LA host. Anyway, Dave had a segment with Les Moonves tonight, called More With Les, and Dave was asking Les who they were going to choose. Among other things he said, Moonves said that he and Dave needed to talk about it and that they want it to be a big surprise, so Moonves wouldn't even talk about any names he's thinking about. Although, he joked about getting Regis. Dave asked if Les could maybe get Jay Leno and Les replied, "No, we'd like to get someone good." |

I prefer Stewart, but Conan would be fun, even if it leaked out that he was talking with CBS informally, just for all the fireworks that could start. It's the summer, I need this drama right now. |
How about comedian Tom Ryan? I only say this because he is scheduled to be on Letterman Friday night and is the only guest scheduled. Could it be that Letterman will be announcing the new host of the Late Late Show?
|
Bob Saget? That would rule if he wasn't all cutsie like Full House and was more like his stand up.

Too bad Vince Vaughn's movie career is going strong, because he would be perfect for a late night slot.

Guest hosts start September 20, including Amy Sedaris, Michael Ian Black, D.L. Hughley, and :yack: Jim Rome.

Romey Van Smack hosting the Late Late Show? I'll tune in to see that. Just keep Jim "Chris" Everett off of there or else it'll turn into another brawl.

Originally posted by nny That'd be awesome. Kimmel rubs a lot of people the wrong way and his show seems to survive. Norm would definitely be my first choice. Hughley is a rotten guest, so I can only pray that he doesn't get it. Michael Ian Black can be funny and I like him, but he has a strange kind of sense of humor that becomes annoying quickly. Jim Rome is probably just one of those people they thought would be fun to use. He's used to being in control of a show and I like him, but not for the host of a late night show. |
1. I don't think it would necessarily have to be in LA.
2. Vince Vaughn wasn't great hosting Letterman. He was absolutely spectacular. |
Originally posted by leepyswetr 1. I don't think it would necessarily have to be in LA. 2. Vince Vaughn wasn't great hosting Letterman. He was absolutely spectacular. NYC is crowded and Conan and Stewart (so does Regis) both have a certain agreement with the people at the Late Show (out of respect), which is why you usually see someone on Dave one day and then on Conan and/or Stewart later in the same week. If CBS brought another show to NYC it would be a total mess, because there are only so many celebs in NY who are promoting something. If CBS wanted that same celeb to do Late Night With Amy Sedaris (my personal wish since Vince V. and Bonnie H. make enough $$ that this wouldn't be worth it), there were not only be a war for guests, but you'd see Tom Cruise on Letterman, Sedaris, Conan, and Stewart in one week. Amy is just so great and she really isn't working that often and this would be a great way for her to finally get recognition she deserves. But, I still hear that CBS wants Chris Rock. He really has proven he doesn't have much of a career in film and he'd still be able to do stand up and HBO specials if he took the job. He's a proven host and it's clear CBS wants a woman or a minority to try and make a splash that Kilborn never seemed to be able to make with his frat-boy routine. I was surprised to read he only made 1 million/year. If true, even as much as he sucked, he was right to leave. That spot behind Dave, especially in LA, should pay at least 2-3 million to start. |

Originally posted by uli2000 OK, I have to admit I am a huge Jim Rome fanboy, but I dont think he will work. A caller tried to bring it up on his radio show friday, and Rome totaly avoided it, but not in the good way of avoding it. I think he's getting because maybe of a connection with Kilborn (were at ESPN together, although Rome wasnt on Sportcenter) or maybe his boy Jay Mohr set him up. I seem to go with Mohr as a more likely reason, especially since Last Comic Standing was a big hit this summer. Did you read my entire post? Letterman isn't testing Rome out for the position. He and the people at CBS are mixing it up for fun. They did the same thing with hosts like Elvis Costello (who did a bang up job) and Luke Wilson (who blew) who guest hosted for Dave. They found that audiences like having different guest hosts and people you wouldn't think of doing that kind of gig. Jim Rome has ZERO chance of getting the LATE LATE SHOW. He's an interesting "personality" and I'm not surprised they're letting him host for 1 night. He won't be back until he's a guest. Jay Mohr and Craig Kilborn aren't having any influence on who Letterman and Moonves are using and as all powerful as Les is, he won't be making this decision. Letterman will. Unless Moonves absolutely can't stand who Letterman and his producers pick, he'll only be a small part of this decision. CBS has already said publicly that Letterman has nothing in his contract that allows him to pick his own successor, so, unless Moonves promises the Letterman gig to the new host, he can always fire the person after Dave leaves anyway. |
