Definitely sucked. But it is mid summer, maybe a lot of the usual fill in guest hosts (Bob Ryan etc.) are also on vacation. I'd imagine a lot of big time sports writers would be taking a vacation now as most will probably be covering the Olympics next month and putting in a lot of hours.

Kaiser Soze 07-27-04 11:00 AM

The thing that this show has going for it is Wilbon and Kornheiser. Without them, the show sucks. ESPN can scour the depths of the TV markets to try and find fill-ins for them when they're gone, but it won't help.

I can't even watch the show if just ONE of them is gone.

Dave B 07-27-04 05:18 PM

I agree that the show is at its' strongest when both Tony and Mike are there, though I still find the show watchable if just one of them is around depending on who the co-host is (ex.s- Tony and Bob Ryan, TK and Norm Chad)

As for the current guest hosts, Steven A is alright in smaller doses, (like the 5 good minutes segment) or if he is paired once in a while with TK, but pair him with a douche like Bayless and he becomes a bit too much.

On the other end of the spectrum, I remember at one point last summer they had David Aldridge and Michelle Ta Foya paired up and that was pretty bad as well. I don't really dislike either one as reporters, but neither of them are the right fit for a show like PTI. I felt kinda sorry for them watching them try desperately to be funny and cute only to have their jokes continually fall flat.

Like others have said some of the usual guest hosts like Ryan or Chad may also be on vacation and Le Betard(who I agree has gotten somewhat better since he first guest hosted and would defiently be an improvement over Bayless) may be too tied up with the Ricky Williams story right now.

Hopefully either Tony or Mike will be back within the next week.

And on a related note when did D.A.'s contract with ESPN run out? I remember him being on PTI just a couple weeks ago. Anyone know where he's going?

I think Tony said something last week about him being in Venice so it's not surprising he's been gone the past week. (and probably won't be back until at least Monday)

Actually, both TK and Mike seem to have hung around more this summer than they did last summer. Last year it seemed like they were both gone the whole month of July.

Red Dog 07-28-04 08:31 AM

Didn't take me long to delete yesterday's episode. Are these same idiots on all week?

Achtung 07-28-04 01:32 PM

Couple of idiots... yesterday was four days before the baseball trade deadline, and the "big story" in baseball for them was whether a guy who interfered with a ball in play should have been ejected from the stadium. Meanwhile let's talk about Kobe some more...

Whoa, sad to see Aldrige go. Even sadder to see Stephen A Smith take his place. Terrible :(

Achtung 07-28-04 04:53 PM

Yeah its becoming pretty clear that Smith knows pretty much nothing about sports that aren't basketball. And even then I have to question how much he knows given his disdain for Euro players.

Kdogg 07-28-04 06:08 PM

At least TNT has an offer on the table for DA if ESPN don't pick him up. Their NBA coverage is already 100 times better than ESPN/ABC. (Just look at how ESPN's draft cover was compared to the old TNT coverage) Having DA will only improve TNT sports.

SteveOVig 07-28-04 07:05 PM

I'm curious as to why Tony Reali/Stat Boy isn't doing any co-hosting. He seems like he'd be an awesome fit as he is a regular on the show as it is.

He's already taken over Around the Horn duties. If he has two shows ESPN might have to up his salary.
