when i was younger i remember seeing something on tv where this family was fighting off these aliens that had landed around their home or farm but the cool thing was that it was all shot like a home video. the home video thing made it a bit creepier kinda like the birthday party on signs. anyone know what im talking about?

You could be talking about Critters. I don't think it was shot "Blair Witch" Style, but I think it was set around a farm.
