Another question about Cable and DirecTV and HDTV

I did all the requisite searching, but still have some basic questions:

We are currently trying out a 61" DLP HDTV.

We only have basic cable, no Tivo, and don't have a home phone line installed.

For the first couple of hours, regular cable programming looked pretty bad - grainy, fuzzy, the works. After 4 or 5 hours, the picture seemed to get decidedly better, and I don't think it was my eyes adjusting to the PQ. Does the bulb break-in period affecting the actual quality of the signal? I assumed it would only affect color/contrast/etc?

Also, how much better is digital cable PQ on a set like this? And is DirecTV better than that? I'm more interested in getting my local HD channels (only $5 per month from the cable company) than I am Tivo, but if it makes a large difference in PQ I'd just get a dish.

Thanks in advance, I'm sure these have been answered before, but I couldn't find them specifically.

It's my understanding that standard def channels look better on big screen TVs coming from satellite over cable.

It really depends on how much compression your cable company uses for digital cable.

I have a 46" DLP and it took some time for the TV to break in. Some channels look good and some don't look so good via D*.

Are you able to pickup your local HD with an antenna? If you can, you might want to look into the satellite offerings.
