I guess if there was one show I picked up, or was about to, it would be the Gilmore Girls. When this started to air, it was not on any of the channels that I received. With the first season out on DVD, and Lauren Graham in it, (along with praise from the board), I think that I will check it out.

Oh, and Sports Night. That was a combination between the board and critics. Thankfully, I picked it up. What a phenomenal series!

Although it is probably gone now, I started watching Wonderfalls because of this board.

Family Guy

I'd like to add to my list:

Nip/Tuck
The Amazing Race

Kal-El 05-18-04 01:54 PM

Definitely Scrubs. I totally missed the first season and got on board somewhere in the middle of the 2nd. Needless to say I've probably watch all episodes at least twice now. :D

bboisvert 05-18-04 02:45 PM

I had avoided Buffy/Angel for the usual reasons (looked like a stupid teeny-bopper WB show, etc.)

I saw some posts (and I assume they were from das, since I trusted them ;) ) saying how it was really a great show, good writing, etc. So I gave the Season 1 DVD set a chance. I've been hooked ever since.

(On a similar note, I also gave the Firefly DVD set a shot after bailing on the show during the Fox run. Glad I did.)

I discovered Farscape and B5 on my own, but I'm glad that so many forum members gave these great programs a shot.

Roto 05-18-04 04:35 PM

Forgot one - Las Vegas. Not a big deal if I miss it, but last night's finale was excellent.

Damfino 05-18-04 04:43 PM

Arrested Development - I hope they rerun this show during the summer since I missed the first 3-4 episodes.

Firefly - This was my first ever blind buy of a TV show on DVD. I completely missed the show when it was on the air, but I've read all of our threads on it and I'll be there for the movie.

PeMo 05-18-04 05:23 PM

Thanks to TV Talk, I have watched the following over the last year on DVD:

Sports Night (Both seasons - thanks das!)
24 (S 1&2, waiting for 3 on DVD)
The Shield (S 1&2, waiting for 3 on DVD or TiVo)

All three of these were definitely worth my time and money. I'm still bummed that Sports Night was cancelled. 3 excellent shows!

I would watch Babylon 5 strictly from das Monkey's recommendation, but a) that's a lot to catch up on and b) I'm not a big sci-fi TV fan.

TheBang 05-18-04 06:08 PM

CSI - During summer 2001, there was lots of extra TV viewing time for us, and after having heard lots of praise on the forum for how interesting and unique CSI was, I got a Season Pass for it. Fortunately, CBS was running multiple re-runs from both seasons that summer, and we got hooked on it.

Scrubs - In fall 2001, I was looking for something to fill out the recording schedule. I read a few threads that had high praise for Scrubs after only a few episodes, so I recorded an episode. I was blown away by how intelligent, witty, and funny the series was, and we've enjoyed it ever since.

Babylon 5 - This is one that I recorded on Sci-Fi solely based on the recommendation of those damn_"live nude girls" threads das Monkey starts. I have not had a chance to watch them yet, but I have them stored on my TiVo and gotten copies of the remainder of the series, until I have time to sit down and begin the series. Maybe there will be time this summer. When I do finally get around to the series, I expect to sufficiently blown away.

turned on to alias thanks to dvdtalk.

Todd B., if you do decide to watch them with some consistent frequency, I'm sure there are many around here who will support you with a discussion thread. Just let us know when you get started. Turst me ... you'll want one.

PeMo, is it time for me to break out the "Two Shows I'll Recommend to Anyone" speech? Hint: one of them is SportsNight, and the other ... well ... you know. ;)

For me it was The Amazing Race, thanks mostly to suggestions in threads about "The Mole."

BTW, even though it's a sub-forum on a DVD website, this truly is one of the best tv forums around. I've shopped around and it even beats the more tv-centric forums I've found.

How many among us have watched a show, and then immediately checked here to see what the rest of us thought?

mookiemeister 05-20-04 09:28 AM

For me it's Six Feet Under and Angel. So many people have positive comments on those shows, I end up checking them out and liked them.

JuryDuty 05-20-04 09:35 AM

24
Malcolm in the Middle
The Office

I have to agree with you there. I too have shopped around quite a bit, and it's really hard to find the level of coherent and often intelligent discussion we have here. I'm not sure why that is, since most of us came here because of DVD ... but perhaps that is why. Because we didn't come here exclusively for one show or an obsession over television, there's a very diverse level of interest and opinion, which fosters good discussion.

Whatever the reason, I do thank everyone here for making this place what it is. I think back to the time before TV Talk, in the long long ago, when there were some sporadic TV-related posts in Otter, and I never imagined I'd end up spending so much time here and valuing so many of your opinions and contributions. Thank you for that.

Shows that I didn't even know existed but now love:
Scrubbs
Six Feet Under (S1) blind buy

TheMadMonk 05-20-04 01:47 PM

I found out about Mythbusters here, and now I tivo that.

movieking 05-29-04 02:55 PM

Just bought Gilmore Girls Season One, which as I posted earlier, is greatly due to this board. I thought of some other shows that I have picked up due to this board, many of which have already been mentioned:

Scrubs
The Shield
The Wire
Nip/Tuck
Monk
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Chappelle's Show
Alias (I gave up after 6 or 7 episodes, but then picked it up again after reading things on this board)
Six Feet Under

In addition to Gilmore Girls, I am thinking about picking up Smallville, since the first two seasons are now out of DVD.

I love that show.

Obvious choices are

Alias - I had perceived conceptions about this show until I read so many comments on what a great show it was. Now I never miss it and myself as well as a bunch of friends I got hooked onto it had semi parties at my college apartment on Sunday nights when Alias was on.

Scrubs

24

Monk

Well, I hardly ever watch TV but have bought some TV DVD sets based on comments here.

24 (2 seasons)
Alias (2 seasons)
Smallville (2 seasons)
Stargate SG1 (6 seasons)
Buffy (First 5 seasons. Will not bother with 6 and 7)
X-Files (First 5 Seasons. Will not bother with 6-9)
Firefly (Series)
Sportsnight (Series)

All were purchased, watched, and enjoyed thanks mainly to the comments here. I guess I do watch a lot of TV :).

Oh, and part of the reason I have never watched a complete episode of Enterprise even though I own all 7 seasons of TNG is due to the lambasting it takes here weekly. Thanks to all here who suffer through that show so I don't have to waste my time.

movieking 05-29-04 08:14 PM

Why have you given up on Buffy? Granted the last two seasons were definitely not its best, but it would be worth the viewing anyway.

From what I have read about season 6, I won't like it. Just knowing that
Spoiler:
Buffy lives
is good enough for me. I don't care to watch
Spoiler:
her's and Willow's lives go down the tubes
. Some of the things I have read about the storylines in Season 6 I can't imagine I would enjoy watching once, let alone owning. From what I understand, the writing wasn't too hot either.

The musical episode sounds interesting though...
