Deadwood, 5/16

Pretty decent episode I thought but it seemed a little slow. I don't really get what's going on with the preacher, and I wish Hickock was still around...

another great episode. this officially the best show on television...easily.

but I thought this season was only to have 10 episodes? right before the preview for next week, however, they said "only 3 episodes left" - so there are actually 12? did they add two to the originally intended 10 when it was so successful? Or did someone lie in the early threads about the 10 episode season?

not that i'm complaining....i wish there were 52 episodes!

Good episode, and nobody even died. I liked all the one on one conversations. The ones between Charlie and Jane were pretty depressing. Robin Weigert has done a hell of a job. In a matter of a few episodes I went from hating Jane to loving her, and I really hope she comes back

Since he's having numbness, vision problems and he's smelling illusory rotteness, I think he has a brain tumor. What exactly the doctor thinks he can do about it is beyond me, and I could very well be wrong.

"If I bleat when I talk, it's 'cause I just got fleeced."

"You and me! It came to me in a vision...ya stupid bastard."

Swearengen is The Man.

Same thing he offered to do for Trixie last week: put the man out of his misery.

Spoilers for what happened to Reverend Smith in real life
Spoiler:
He was shot and killed about three weeks after Hickok was killed while walking in the woods. They never figured out why he was shot -- he wasn't robbed -- so maybe the producers of the show have decided that he was shot as a form of euthenasia.

To the original poster: I miss Hickok too, but if they stay true to history, there are some other interesting real-life characters coming next season:
Spoiler:
Wyatt Earp came to Deadwood briefly; he was looking for a job as a sheriff, but left when he found out Deadwood already had one -- highlight the next spoiler block to find out who it's going to be. There was also a famous black cowboy named Deadwood Dick, whose popularity was due in part to his own self-promotion.

Super spoiler for what happens to one of the Deadwood characters:
Spoiler:
Seth Bullock becomes the first sheriff of Deadwood

This is a great show. I went from watching out of curiosity, to watching because I absolutely love this show. Even when nobody is dying or getting the shit kicked out of them, this show still flies by. The preacher is really annoying, but I guess a tumor could do that to a person. I hope Jane comes back too, she became one of my favorite characters.

Thanks for spoilerizing these. It's hard to keep from reading them, but I'm going to try.

Keep in mind, the show has deviated from history in a bunch of ways so far. For example, there' sno evidence that Bullock and Hickok knew each other -- the real Seth Bullock didn't come to town until the very day Jack McCall killed Hickok. Bullock and Charlie Utter didn't arrest McCall, either -- he was arrested because a judge heard him bragging about being the man who killed Hickok. And Reverend Smith was pointedly not asked to speak at Hickok's funeral, despite the fact that he was the only minister in town.

So who knows if the HBO Smith or Bullock or whoever will have the same fate as the real-life Smith or Bullock or whoever, but just in case, I like to spoilerize any historical information that we haven't gotten to in the show yet.

But they have stuck with the major points, specifically who lives and dies. That's what I'd prefer to see play out on the show without knowing ahead of time. I'll probably give in after the first season is over though because of how long we'll have to wait for season 2.

By the way, I read Bullock came to town 2 days before Hickock was killed, not the same day. F'in hooplehead historian c-suckers can't agree on anything. Now I wonder which is right. I think I read it on that Deadwood tourist site someone posted after the first or second episode.

Yeah, looking at it again, I think I was wrong -- Bullock came to town on AUgust 1, 1876 and Hickok died on August 2, 1876. I think I got confused because one of the sites I was looking at said Bullock showed up in Deadwood less than 24 hours before Hickok died and my brain turned "less than 24 hours before" into "the same day."

I hope the Season 1 DVD set has some good historical documentaries on what really happened in Deadwood during the time covered by Season 1.

does anyone know if Swearengen was a real person or is he made up for entertainment purposes?

Swearengen is based on a real person

History tells us that as a local gambling maven, sleepermaster, opium dealer, gold swindler and conniving killer, Swearengen earned a staggering $5,000 a day in the lawless Gold Rush town.
"No one seems to know exactly where Swearengen came from," McShane says. "So Milch decided to make him a Brit, with speech patterns different than everyone else's. Calamity Jane describes my character in the show as 'a slimy limey [bleep].' Which is one of the great 'Deadwood' haikus."

I feel the same way, and I'm glad it's official!

Now for the bad news, how long are we going to have to wait for Season 2? A year? More?

Something I found funny is when that guy asked Al if he could tell the other guy about their deal and Al told that guy sarcastically not to tell the other one about the deal they made together and then when the other guy asked him what was going on he wouldn't tell him.
