Spawn Animated Series coming back to television!
From Spawn.com
Todd McFarlane Productions and IDT Entertainment have announced a multi-faceted development, production and distribution agreement to produce animated programming and merchandise based on Spawn and other TMP original intellectual properties. Todd McFarlane Productions is best known for its multiple Emmy-winning Spawn franchise. IDT Entertainment is a vertically integrated entertainment/animation company. The company includes animation and film production through DPS/Film Roman, Mainframe Entertainment and DKP Effects, and video distribution through Anchor Bay Entertainment. IDT Entertainment is a subsidiary of IDT Corporation.
The initial project is the return of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn: The Animated Series. Spawn is the story of a highly decorated U.S soldier, brutally executed by his own men. Reborn as a creature from hell, he fights a constant battle between the forces of good and evil. The first Spawn series aired on HBO from 1997 through 1999 and won two Emmy awards. Spawn, one of the world's best-selling comic books with hundreds of millions sold worldwide, has also been the subject of a live-action feature film released in 1997. Distributed by New Line Cinema, the movie has grossed over $100 million internationally.
"This agreement is better than marvelous," said Jim Courter, IDT’s CEO. "Worldwide, the demand for a new Spawn series continues to grow. The first series broke new creative ground for an animated series and was its generation’s most popular comic franchise. With IDT Entertainment as the animation partner the new series will be even better."
Grammy- and Emmy-winning Producer/Director Todd McFarlane will oversee all aspects of development and production, as executive producer. Terry Fitzgerald, senior vice president of creative development of Todd McFarlane Productions, will serve as co-executive producer and Sidney Clifton, senior vice president and head of programming and development for DPS Film Roman, will lead the creative development team on the IDT Entertainment side. DPS Film Roman is the IDT Entertainment company known for its award-winning production work on The Simpsons, King of the Hill and other popular broadcast television programs.
"Ever since the Spawn animated series left HBO in 1999, I have been asked -- almost daily -- when the show is going to return," said Todd McFarlane, Spawn creator and CEO of the McFarlane Companies. "I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to not only bring the show back, but also do it with the intent of making it better creatively than its first incarnation. Teaming up with IDT Entertainment’s DPS/Film Roman will allow us to take it to the next level of animation technology."
In addition to Spawn, McFarlane will create two additional animated properties. All three projects include animated broadcast television series, DVDs, feature films, video games, apparel and action figures, as well as other consumer products. McFarlane Toys, one of the world’s premiere toy manufacturers, is currently on its 25th figure line for Spawn action figures and merchandise.
"The long awaited new Spawn series provides the perfect opportunity to match Todd McFarlane’s legendary creative genius with IDT Entertainment’s innovative animation expertise," said Morris Berger, CEO of IDT Entertainment. "Spawn will mark the start of a long-term relationship. Together, IDT Entertainment and Todd McFarlane can revolutionize comic animation and develop franchise properties of enduring value."
The McFarlane Group of companies produces award-winning animated television, feature films and music videos. Past projects include Pearl Jam’s animated music video Do the Evolution, Korn’s mini-movie-style video for Freak on a Leash, Jodie Foster’s critically acclaimed The Dangerous Lives of the Altar Boys. Animation and live-action projects under the production of McFarlane and Fitzgerald have won a Grammy, two Emmys, two MTV Music Awards, and a Much Music Video Music Award. A leader in publishing and entertainment, the McFarlane Group owns the rights and trademarks to more than 250 intellectual properties and characters.
IDT Entertainment, a division of IDT Corporation, is a vertically integrated entertainment concern that develops, produces and distributes proprietary and licensed entertainment content, with a particular focus on high-quality animation. IDT Entertainment is in the early stages of production on two proprietary CG animated feature films, Gene Roddenberry’s Starpoint Academy and a feature yet to be named, directed by Christopher Reeve.

So will it be continuing the HBO series or a totally new one?
What I liked best about the HBO series was that it was for adults. I hope the new series has the same tone as the old one.

The header of this post is very misleading. No network has yet agreed to put this on TV yet, there is only a production deal. HBO seems to be waffling on bringing it back, according to what I read on Zen.

If it does managed to get done I wonder what story will be used, I mean the series was pretty far behind the comics even when it was on. Would love to see Spawn's meeting with God animated.

I'd love to see HBO bring it back. But, did they cancel it before or did McFarline just kinda give up on it? It was an awesome series. And yeah, Keith David must be Spawn. His voice was on the Xbox Soul Calibur 2 as Spawn so maybe that's a good sign, unless they just ripped his quotes from the series...?

I'm a big fan of the character but never really got into the series. I recently picked it up on DVD and I'm going to give it another whir.

The second season DVDs have a mastering error- S1 and S3 are DD5.1, but S2 is 2.0.
What I read is that if HBO doesn't pick it up it will go straight-to-video. Either way I hope it continues the original series.
Spawn was one of the more interesting mixes of eastern and western animation styles.

SPAWN ANIMATION PROJECT MOVING FORWARD
The Newest Details on the Upcoming Spawn Animation
May 6, 2005
Breathing life into Spawn through animation has been one of the highlights on Todd McFarlane's resume. For three seasons on HBO, Todd McFarlane Productions brought award-winning animation to the small screen. Winning two Emmy's for Outstanding Animated Program, as well as a Golden Reel Award for achievement in sound editing, were huge accomplishments.
TMP is thrilled to be back in action on a new Spawn animated project. The wait has been long, but for good reason. With major technological advances in animation over the last five years, we are now at a place where we can truly bring Spawn back to life better than fans ever expected. It's been a year since we revealed that Spawn's cape would once again be snapping in the wind and his chains would again echo through the alleys of New York City. Fortunately a lot has happened in that year and we are happy to announce that this week marks the beginning of our fan updates on the Spawn animation.
From now until the animation is released, we are going to keep fans abreast of everything we can when it comes to the progress of the much-anticipated Spawn: Animation.
As we have mentioned before, we are creating this new animation in partnership with IDT Entertainment and Film Roman, an IDT Entertainment company. The relationship between our two companies is something we are very excited about, as we will be able to create and distribute our product within the same family of companies. Film Roman is a leading producer of animation and special effects, including such series as The Simpsons, King of the Hill, X-Men: Evolution and Tripping the Rift, season 2 of which will premiere this summer on the Sci-Fi network. Sister company Anchor Bay Entertainment is one of the largest independent distributors of DVDs and videos to retail outlets. All parties are enthusiastic about the relationship and we hope to have another hit on our hands with Spawn: Animation.
Our plan moving forward is to bring spawn.com users a behind-the-scenes, first look at everything related to this project. You will be the first audience to see location designs, character sketches, designs and turns, color schemes and other visual elements of the animation. We intend to give you video footage of creative meetings and the process of Todd interacting with the artists and animators, discussing mood, lighting, perspectives and shadows among other things. In addition to this, we will provide updates on how things are progressing as far as soundtrack, casting, animating and more.
As we get deeper into production, we plan on sharing profiles of the artists and animators with you. When the time comes for casting, we will explain the process of selecting the perfect voice and quite possibly let you hear the voice tests. As often as we can, we will provide illustrations, photographs and video of production in progress. It is our hope that you will feel as connected to the project as we are and gain a good idea of what it takes to get Todd's unique vision onto the screen.
Something we are really looking forward to is hosting exciting contests related to the animation. We are still brainstorming ideas, but it's our intention to have some exceptional prizes for you, our loyal fans. We know you have been waiting a long time for this and we want to show you how much we appreciate your patience!
To start off we will try and get a few of the most common questions answered:
No. The new animation is not a continuation of the HBO series.
We have been working on a new story to go along with the new and improved look for a long time to make sure tonally it was something entirely new and edgy.
Todd along with Brian Holguin -- the writer of Spawn and KISS: Psycho Circus comic books -- have co-written the script.
The animation will be "R" rated.
Todd and TME president Terry Fitzgerald will be Executive Producing the animation. We are also thrilled to have a few of the directors and animators from the original HBO series returning to the animation team as well.
Todd McFarlane Entertainment and some of its executives will provide consulting work on this project.
The biggest difference you will notice is in the visuals. This time we'll be featuring a combination of 2D/3D characters on 3D backgrounds, as opposed to the HBO series where everything was exclusively 2D with touches of 2D CG.
Yes, we are trying to get Keith David back as the voice of Spawn.
Upon completion of the animation we intend to shop the project around Hollywood and are confident we will find a home on network or cable television for future installments of the animation.
Currently we are planning to release the 70-minute movie direct to DVD via Anchor Bay Entertainment.
The projected DVD release date is early 2006.

THIS RULES....
I just not two days ago bought spawn 111-145 . I had a lot of catching up to do. All my damn comics stores close to me closed awhile ago so keeping up to date kinda fell to the wayside.

Sigh. I really wish that if they are going to do this that they would have picked up where the last one left off. They were just getting ready to get into some good stuff (Angela, and all of that). Now, are we getting another new origin? And reintroducing Malbozia and the Clown and all of the villains that the other show did? Probably won't tune in for this one, unless they do something really impressive. I really liked the HBO show.

Although the casting sounds cool, I'm still not that excited about this project. Unless they pick up where the old series left off. I'm not interested in watching another Spawn origin story.

The preview looks a lot like the HBO series, which is a good thing. When it was said that the show would be CGI I cringed, but computer-based animation can be used for standard 2-D as well. Bototm line - I'm there!

Yeah, I can see your point but does Hollywood ever do that? Why do a new Superman:TAS when they could've started were some of the 70's shows left off? Perhaps they're looking for a few new fans.
