Question: John Stevens's Grandfather?

On his recent PBS special, political humorist Mark Russell commented that American Idol contestant John Stevens was his grandson. He said it in a context that I took to mean he was joking, but then wondered why he would have said it at all, since there wouldn't have been much to the joke. They're both from Buffalo, NY ... does anyone know if this is the case? I found ONE source on the web that backs this up but it is short on details.

I wondered why this wouldn't be included in any biographical info on Stevens, since Russell is pretty well known and might even qualify as a celebrity. It was pretty well publicized that former Idol contenstant Justin Guarini is the son of former Atlanta police chief Eldrin Bell, for comparison's sake.

Thanks for any info.

I thought I had read that Howdy Doody was his grandfather. That's why he was always so wooden when he sang.
