FOX's 'Swan' Not Going Away (2nd Season)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - TV and cultural critics will have a second season of "The Swan" to kick around sometime in the not-too-distant future.

FOX says it will begin searching for candidates for the second season of the show, which in each episode takes two average-looking women, isolates them from the outside world (and mirrors) for 90 days as they undergo extensive cosmetic surgery, fitness and diet training and "life coaching," then shows them what their new selves look like.
Then, the show's team tells one of them sorry, you're still not quite good enough and sends her home, while the "winner" goes on to compete in a beauty pageant with the other winners at the end of the season.
The network is touting "The Swan" as "the most popular makeover series in America," which, thanks to an "American Idol" lead-in for its premiere, it is. The show is drawing about 10.5 million viewers a week thus far. (Since moving to its regular Monday home, though, it has averaged about a half-million fewer viewers than ABC's "Extreme Makeover.")
"The Swan" will conduct auditions for the show's second season in several cities in the coming weeks, on top of the thousands of applications FOX says it's already received. Further details on the casting process are at www.swancasting.com.
Though her after picture looks pretty good!

Some of them have made miraculous changes. The pics on Fox's official site are kinda rough, though. Most of them look like really pretty transvestites in the 'after' pics there.

Realty shows also are really only good for as long as it is fresh. Once it gets old it is hard to keep that audiance. Sure there is that rare Survivor, but as you can see through the years the ratings have been slowly slipping.
non-scripted shows need a year or two to catch itself. Imagine if Sinfield only had one season? The first season was pretty bad. Nothing like what it had when it picked up in the years later. Then you have Fox Friday night of doom. How many shows have survived on friday night? X-files seems to be the only one that lasted long. They even moved that later on to keep it stronger with ratings. Harsh Realm, Mellinium, John Doe, Firefly, Wonderfalls. It's proven that Friday night is not a night to schedule new shows.
Fox may fall to the reality shows for a quick buck, but it's those series they make famous and support that bring in the bucks down the road. Syndication for reality shows is terrible. It's not fresh, no one will want to see it. god those before and after pictures are scary. Out of the group Racheal and Cindy are the only ones who don't look terrible.

And there's also matter of timeslots... Fox seems to air all of their quality shows on Friday. I bet if Wonderfalls had started out in The Swan's timeslot, 9pm Mondays, it's ratings would be fairly close to what Swan is now pulling in.
So I'm not unhappy with Fox because they cancel low-rated, quality shows... I'm mad because Fox basically sets them up to get those low ratings.
*edit* I just remembered Forever Eden could actually verify what I said about time slot... Since Forever Eden had both the Swan's timeslot and WF's, it's actually an interesting comparison: Looking at a single showing, Swan pulled in a 5.8 last Monday. Wonderfalls a 2.3 on 3/26. Forever Eden pulled a 1.8 on 4/9, Friday, and a 3.9 on 3/8, Monday.
So bottom line, if Wonderfalls had started out on Mondays at 9pm and the Swan at Fridays at 9... This thread likely would have been talking about Wonderfalls second season and the Swan would long have been cancelled. Of course WF might have failed regardless, but I like to think this country isn't so pathetic that it only watches ridiculous crap.

Yes, but why would Fox intentionally sabotage any of their shows? Do they want their scripted shows to do poorly and thus lose money? I wouldn't think so. Like I said, they are a business. I would think they want all their shows to succeed.
I think success is more related to "what's hot". Right now, reality shows are hot so everyone jumps on the bandwagon. The same has happened for drama, sitcoms, etc. It seems to be cyclical. Reality will be gone in a few years and crime shows or something else will take over. I don't really understand it but it happens time and time again. Many of the copycats in the "hot" genre are crap yet people watch anyway. They probably won't even watch good reality programming (if there is such a thing) in a few years if sitcoms are the hot genre. Some very good shows are sometimes just the victim of bad timing.
Also, many of the shows people get upset about will never catch on or at least take a long time to do so. Take Alias for example. 4th year, still no audience. Enterprise, Smallville, etc - ditto. These are good shows (well, um, maybe not Enterprise
) Some do catch on (Seinfeld, Cheers, etc.); however, the networks just aren't as willing to risk it when reality seems to be a sure thing right now and its cheap to make. Its a shame but it's true and in a way, its understandable from a business perspective.

Fox has sabotaged them before on purpose. Think Futurama. Many reasons come to mind. Creative control of the show for one. Bad scheduling is another. How many shows do you have to cancel to realize that friday night is not a good night to have shows. Remember that reality show that the chick had to figure out which guy was gay? yeah. it was canned on it's friday night time slot.
Alias is bombing for a reason. It's up against some heavy hitting programs in it's time slot. Not only are the networks not willing to risk it and renew it for a year to develop and audiance, if it doesn't get the huge numbers others have they cancel it before people even realize it aired.
From a business perspective it's not entirely understandable. Those reality shows will bring home the big bucks for the here and now. Those scripted will bring in revenue long after it is in syndication. They are taking the lump some amount to show a quick profit.

omg, I finally checked out that link and saw the pics. Just look at the pictures of that girl Kristy G. by clicking GALLERY to the left. She was a hottie BEFORE surgery, just needed to fix her hair. It's like they purposely try to make them as unpleasant looking as they can for the beforehand pics and video. I'd burst out laughing at her post-cutup pic if it weren't so incredibly sad. They changed Cindy I from an Indian to a Chinese-Indian, lol!

Alias rating is not good because ABC is not doing well across their whole lineup. Not just Alias is doing bad. Also, Alias is competing against other good shows at the same time, so it's hard to get better rating. But as long as the quality of the show doesn't deteriorate and ABC is willing commit to the show, why do we fan need to have it get really high rating?

It really doesn't surprise me that they are giving Swan another season. Come on, this is FOX we are talking about. They even go ahead and give the one reality show that really couldn't have been a sequel (Joe Millionaire), and give it a sequel.

Thanks to FOX perhaps the death of "reality TV" will come sooner than we think.
Honestly, the concept for this show was really bad. (like all thier reality shows)
