Chris Rock's new HBO Special - 4/17/04
 

Well all I can say is that this is one remarkably unfunny show. It's 45 minutes in and i'm having a hard time figuring out why I'm still watching it. Mr. Rock has jumped the shark I guess.

Or maybe it's just that we watched an hour of Dave Chappelle prior to it and he is just one tough act to follow....

Okay, he JUST did a bit about married adult playdates and how you get put in a room with a guy who likes baseball...etc.

Anyway, YESTERDAY on a comedy central they played an old "young comedians" show with Dave Chapelle and he did that EXACT routine!! Am I going crazy here. I hole someone knows what the deal is.

I enjoyed it but I think married life and parenting has made Chris Rock a little less harsh than in the past. The marriage jokes got a good laugh out of me and my wife, as well as the Jackson bits, but he wasn't quite as controversial as he's been in the past.

Sort of an uneven show. Some parts I found funnier than anything from his last special, and some left me begging for the next bit. It WAS weird to hear jokes about Lil Jon and Rick James, though, after seeing Dave do them in the last few months (not sure when Rock's special was taped).

Totally unfunny, and even annoying in many parts. I hope he doesn't plan on doing more political comedy, because he has a laughably simple grasp on today's issues. Looks like Comedy Central better revise their list.

Like his last two HBO specials, he had his moments. I think that perhaps he had been better served cutting his act down about 20 minutes and tightening those things that worked. Still funnier than most crap on TV.

And not to drop race into the matter, but the truth is that if you aren't a person of color, you're just not going to fully understand what the man is talking about half the time.

I didn't see the beginning but i caught most of it. The part i watched from was the Janet Jackson part. Bigger and Blacker is no doubt better than "Never Scared" but this was a pretty good show. Chris Rock to me is never drop dead funny he is funny in a ha ha sorta way. I don't know i've never really laughed really really hard at any stand up comics. I will say this though nobody has consistently been as good as Chris Rock has at stand up.

Also i think Showtime is having a Dave Chappelle stand up special i don't know what's the exact date though.

Anyone know of re-air dates or times for this? Missed it.

Overall, I thought it was above average, thanks to great jokes about Michael Jackson and rap music. But a lot of it seemed too "preachy."

I rate it 3rd in his HBO standups, with Bring the Pain first and Bigger and Blacker following that.

I thought the first 20 minutes were great as well as the last 20, but the mid scetion wasn't funny.

No offense to fellow African-American DVDTalkers, but are you guys sick of hearing about slavery and "White- Men are evil"? I know some things still need to change and I all for everything good but as Ed Norton said in Spike Lee's 25th Hour, "Slavery ended 150 years ago, move the f*** on."

Bigger and Blacker was better.

I'm black and I'm not sick of hearing about it if a person can relate it today and has a solid arguement/or something to say about it.

I think WAY too many people think that just because everybody has the same rights and liberties means that most societal problems involving race don't occur anymore.

The first 20 minutes or so.....terrible. Then it picked up when he started talking about Michael, Janet and Jermaine Jackson. Then it sucked again for a while. Then I turned on "Six Feet Under" ;)

It wasn't fall out of your chair funny but Chris Rock has never been that type of comedian imo. I'm a black man and the slavey stuff is tired, but i can never get tired of it as long as Chris Rock is doing it. It was good stuff to see everybody in the crowd having fun even though some of the jokes may have been offensive to white people they still were having fun. All around good show the last 10-15 minutes was very very good. I'd recommend this to anybody.

In the showing I went to in February one guy sitting in front of me was angry during his black/slavery bit and walked out saying it was bullshit.

I for one lost all respect for Rock during this show. Rock is a racist, plain and simple. I'm sick and tired of how black actors, comics, whatever can make racist remarks about whites all day long and never be called out on it. I'm sick and tired of being blamed for ever misfortune that befalls blacks. If a white comic made a joke about blacks loving fried chicken (a joke many of them make themselves) he'd be labeled a racist and torn apart by the press. It's total horsesh*t.

Give him a break. He's black. That's a big speed bump in a black man's showbiz career.

Hmmm...you know, I might be off-base in agreeing here, but I can't think of a single Euro-American comedian that makes fun of African-Americans...

Of course not. You have to understand that double standards are in place because of history--whether you like it or not. It's acceptable for a girl to slap a guy but not for a guy to slap a girl. It's acceptable for a black comic to make fun of white people but not vice versa.

Only difference is that when the shoe used to be on the other foot, it was full of hate and malice. When it's done now, usually it's done in jest. I'm sure some black comics have a different perspective on race in America than a middle class white American watching his special on HBO on Saturday. Likewise, a person like Aisha Tyler, a black female comic who has always come from a middle class background, will probably not share the same sentiments as Rock does.

Yeah, but he's white. Do you see him ripping on blacks?

the only line of carlin's that i could think of that could be consitered racist is
"blacks like Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor can say ******, because thats exactly what they are." (it was a bit about taming of the language, like the word "bathroom" becoming now "restroom", and "wash room") i forgot what album thats on.
