Try watching Robin Williams (if you can stay awake)

Damon Waynes said it best. "If it der is I ain't seen none!"

Hey Colossus,
Check out Tough Crowd on Comedy Central.

I was actually shocked when he made the joke about abortion rallies because you know the girls have sex. I mean that same joke was used in Dogma, a movie the guy was in.

I doubt Kevin Smith was the first person to make that joke, but if you're in the movie don't rip it off.

Rock actually did a variation on that joke on his first CD, BORN SUSPECT.

Jon,

I'm black and I'm not sick of hearing about it if a person can relate it today and has a solid arguement/or something to say about it.

I think WAY too many people think that just because everybody has the same rights and liberties means that most societal problems involving race don't occur anymore.

I agree with you on both posts PacMan.

I can understand people not liking Rock's brand of comedy, and his quasi-racist views on white america. But come on does anyone think he's a racist? Like I mean a real racist? The KKK are racist. Some black panthers are racist. Rock is a damn comic. Lets not be so sensitive. Comedians make fun about the most serious subjects to overcome and I don't believe he was trying to be hurtful. Jewish comics make Hitler/Holocaust jokes so why can't black comics joke about slavery(two very f***ed up situations)? Sure its over, but that wasn't some little thing, it was MAJOR and shaped this nation. If you don't think it doesn't still effect black people at all, then you're being a little naive.

Personally I don't think his standup is for everybody. It is geared pretty heavily towards brown people, and I think thats why a lot of the jokes were falling flat last night with the audience(who looked to have quite a few white people in it)...and some of it just wasn't all that funny. Do you think his "I loooove black people...but I hate niggas" is for white people?(my personal favorite bit of his). Sure white people can laugh at it, due to his great delivery and all, but I mean thats black comedy for black people.

Hell and I love white people, some of my best friends are white :P

mee2 04-20-04 05:50 PM

PLease, making fun of white peole is one of the few perks us blacks are afforded. Whites area allowed to join country clubs, blacks get to make fun of whitey during stand-up...:D

So if a white guy was making insulting jokes about blacks then he wouldn't be labeled a racist as long as he wasn't wearing a white hood and buring a cross on stage?

Chris Rock got on stage and made racist statements. On the movie that was show before the special (Head of State) he took a mostly white staff, with the exception of a hot white girl (ahem) and the campaign manager, and he replaced them with a all black staff. Now if John Travolta made a movie where he was running for President and he replaced the all black campaign staff with an all white one there would be an outcry from the NAACP, Jesse Jackson and the like, decrying the film as racist.

Rock is always making "fun" of white people and no one ever says anything. But I'll bet you a dollar he'd be pretty vocal about it if a white comic was making "fun" of the blacks. He's a racist, he's a hypocrite.

Most comedy is insulting, thats why its funny. Sarah Silverman gives it to all kinds of people (blacks included) and its funny when she does it. So does Dave Chappelle.

John Travolta made a movie where he essentially switched places with black people and made all the "black folks" into "evil whitey" and I had no issue with that, so that movie you're talking about wouldn't bother me either.

Now I'm not saying you don't have a valid point. Don't take my responses as trying to just write you off or argue just for the sake of arguing. Thats not what I'm about. I'm black you're white, we most likely see the world differently and most likely we won't agree on this, but I am curious as to what you think(run on sentence, WHOO!). What bit/bitsbothered you the most? I watched the special again and I really couldn't see what was bad about it. In fact I found a lot of the stuff he was saying to be true.

Also I'm curious if you watch Dave Chappelle? And would you label a white person racist for laughing at a Chappelle/Rock joke that was squarly making fun of black people?

Thanks in advance for letting me pick your brain.

PacMan2006 04-20-04 08:19 PM

^^Just our of curiosity, does anyone know what else he stated that was supposedly racist besides saying the "c-word" (and I don't want to speak for all of white America, but I'm sure that word doesn't get you all fiery and pissed off, but who knows). I'm asking because I cannot remember some of these other aspects people here are so upset about, so examples would be great.

I'll just try to say that double standards are in place due to history. Not just history that happened in the 1700's on a plantation, but history that happened 40 years ago. When a black person goes on stage and pokes fun at the majority of America--who happen to be white--it's taken in jest. When a white person goes on stage and pokes fun at the minority of America, and also knowing all of the historical baggage between the two races, then that is considered wrong or racist.

Like someone else said, it's sort of like it being acceptable for Jews to poke fun at Germans or women being able to belittle men.

RyoHazuki 04-20-04 09:02 PM

So a black guy stole my car, I can say ****** all I want because of "history"?

tsohg 04-20-04 10:34 PM

Some of you are too sensitive. I guess you all choose to ignore his n*ggas vs Black people routine or the part in Saturday's show about how black people buy rims and flashy jewelry or his rip on the Jackson family (yes they are still Black) I think he goes after blacks white or whoever equally.

Frank TJ Mackey 04-26-04 12:13 AM

It was uneven but still very funny in parts.

75 minutes is too long, and the sexually explicit stuff at the tail end was unnecessary for someone who writes stuff as well as he does.

let's not even compare Dave Chappelle.

i have always liked Dave Chappelle, he has a funny show, as a standup comedian though, Dave cannot hold Chris Rock's jockstrap.

the aftermath 04-26-04 03:03 AM

A couple of observations.

Chris Rock isn't as funny as he used to be. Maybe my sense of humor has changed a bit, but hearing the same old black people/slavery etc shtick from Chris is becoming really stale for me. In fact, a lot of what he said sounded old/recycled.

And he swears way too much. It seemed like he was forcing every f-bomb and was saying it just because he could. Practically every sentence contained an F-Bomb. It just seemed a bit unnecessary. The context in which he was using the curse words seemed out of place.

Come to think of it, the whole routine sounded forced and uncomfortable.

Have you seen Chappelle's HBO special 'Killin them softly'? Dave's special absolutely destroyed Rock's latest offering IMHO.

Chappelle is a much more diverse comic, and when he touches on "black issues" it's done in such a way that it's gut-bustingly hilarious.

uteotw 04-26-04 12:56 PM

Watched some of it, found it patently racist, turned it off.
Just not funny...

Hamburger3 04-29-04 03:48 PM

And I found the post before mine racist.

Rivero 04-29-04 06:02 PM

Rock's material is no more racist than Chappelle's material. I guess white guys tend to like Dave a bit better because he seems friendlier, you can hang with him, not as scary to white folk as Rock.

HistoryProf 04-29-04 07:41 PM

people love Dave Chappelle because he makes Bryant Gumble look like Malcolm X!

DJLinus 04-29-04 07:56 PM

I found it overlong and a bit preachy. Whittle it down to about 45 minutes and it'd be great. Not "Bring the Pain" perfect, but pretty solid.

It did inspire me to dig out my Chris Rock CDs and give them a few listens. There's one skit on "Bigger and Blacker" that I had forgotten about and it had me absolutely rolling (when Biz Markie does "When Harry Met Sally..." - "I love it that it takes you an hour and a half to order a salad").

Chappelle spreads it around more. He makes fun of blacks just as much as whites. He also isn't so much "I was a slave now give me reparations" kinda jokes.

Meaning Chappelle doesn't bring up the topic of slavery as much? That may be the case but 99.99% of his stuff is still race-related. I recall a hilarious bit he did very recently where he went on and on and on about how white kids and young white adults want to be black, try to be black and consider it 'cool to have a black friend'.....and yet deep down they still hate blacks and secretly say the N word indoors. I find it funny that so many people here are calling Rock more racist. They're not that different. Chappelle just seems like a nice guy, is more subtle about it. College kids love him. Rock is more open and matter-of-fact about it. White people don't really like that.

wmansir 05-01-04 04:29 PM

Rock isn't just "more open and matter-of-fact about it." He is angry. I can't comment on the latest special because I haven't seen it, but his past specials had a lot of anger in them. Some would say it's just his style.

movieking 05-01-04 07:25 PM

Just had a chance to watch this, and I was really dissapointed. Unbelievably so. I loved Bigger and Blacker and Roll With The Punches, but I don't think that I laughed once. Maybe a couple of giggles, but that is about it.

I'll take Chappelle any day.
