Superstar USA - or why the WB really does just suck

In The News: Idol Gets Spoofed, Lil' Kim and More!
Thursday, April 15, 2004

PAGING CAMILE VELASCO...: The WB has quietly wrapped production on Superstar USA, a bizarre version of American Idol that tosses out great singers while rewarding the William Hungs of the world. But in typical reality fashion, the contestants are not in on the joke. In fact, the judges must keep a straight face when they heap praise on tone-deaf singers and send truly gifted crooners home. "These people believe they're the next pop superstar, even though they're horrible singers," exec producer Mike Fleiss (The Bachelor) tells Variety. "This is about people who are clearly delusional and watching them butcher song after song." That is just plain cruel. I love it!
They're cancelling Angel to put on THIS kind of programming?! Ugh!

This sounds like it'll be sorta, kinda, mildly amusing... for about half an episode.

Reasons the WB doesn't suck:

Gave Buffy 5 years (would have given it more had they not been outbid) when no one else would have ever done a show like that.

Gave Angel 5 years, 2 without having Buffy with it, 1 with no Buffy on the air at all.

Gilmore girls, Everwood, Grounded for Life, JKX ...

Btw, I'll watch this too.

Now this I would actually consider watching instead of that waste of 90 minutes per week on FOX.

Well, if Groucho and das are in, it's gotta be good.

The reason why all the networks are jumping on the reality bandwagon is because those shows are so cheap to produce and the payoff is huge if they end up hitting. The downside for the networks is that these shows do poorly in syndication and home video.

Angel wasn't cancelled because of poor ratings - it was cancelled because its ratings did not justify its cost. Keep in mind that Angel was not produced by the WB, so they couldn't even justify running the show at a loss and making up the cost in syndication of home video - like they could if, say, Smallville started running in the red.

That being said, anything that takes a shot at AI is OK in my book.
