Trainwreck Alert: The Nick & Jessica Variety Hour (ABC; 9/8c)
America's favorite young married couple, Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson, multi-platinum artists known from their hit MTV series, Newlyweds, star in their first-ever television special, featuring a fun-filled variety hour of music and comedy.
In a throwback to the days of Sonny & Cher and The Carol Burnett Show, the beloved Nick & Jessica breathe new life into the variety format, showcasing their singing and comedic talents in a series of sketches and musical performances with such guests as Jewel, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Kenny Rogers, baseball Hall of Fame star Johnny Bench, Mr. T, and The Muppets stars Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy.
The musical performances include a duet with Jessica and Jewel, who sings her classic song, "Who Will Save Your Soul," and a duet with Nick and Babyface singing the Stevie Wonder classic, "For Once in My Life." Jessica will also perform "Islands in the Stream" with the legendary Kenny Rogers. Comedy sketches include a hilarious skit with Mr. T, and Jessica and Nick dropping in on Kermit and Miss Piggy, who are taping their own variety show. Also, Nick's hometown hero, Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer Johnny Bench, drops in to teach Nick & Jessica how to hit like a pro. Jessica will also perform her new hit single, "Take My Breath Away."

Having seen every episode of The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour and The Sonny and Cher Show, I was joking with a friend last year that they should do something like this. Now that they've done it, I have to watch.

So is this show based on the SNL skit? I think it's funny that when Nick & Jessica hosted SNL, they did a skit just like this and now they are doing an actual show.

To be honest, I liked it quite a bit. It brought me back to the days of watch Sonny and Cher, The Carol Burnett Show, Hee-Haw and the other Variety shows.
If it airs again, I'll watch it again.
I've got no problem looking at Jessica (but I can't stand looking at her as she sings; can't she hold still?)

I guess I've got a target too, because I enjoyed this as well. Of course it won't win any awards for acting or writing, but its not trying for them either. They didn't take the show or themselves to seriously and had fun with it. I'd watch it again if it was on.

I thought it was Ok. I wished they had tried some newer ideas for the 21st century rather than trying to recapture the feel of a 70s variety show. The Sonny and Cher song at the end capped it for me that they were not trying anything new and just trying to rehash an old format nearly 30 years old. That said, I did enjoy it for what it was, and I have a great desire to see this kind of show take off and become successful. Not because I really want to see this week after week after week, but because if something else comes along on TV and is successful, maybe the TV execs will cancel the horrible reality shows they have on now. And I would take Nick and Jessica's show over any reality TV show any day of the week.

Since it was tongue-in-cheek--it was more of a tribute or parody

The writing wasn't that great, but living through all those Sonny & Cher moments, it gave me a good chuckle. Jessica's spazzing during her songs is pretty annoying, but they're pretty likeable people, and it was all in good fun. The mini JT was great, as was much of the Mickey Mouse Club skit.
It was fun as a novelty thing, and I'd probably watch it again, but the concept would wear very thing very quickly.

They are very likable. I don't know if Jessica and Nick have enough personality to keep it up week after week. They are OK but a far cry from Sonny & Cher. Writing could use work. Singing with a car is akin to 'jumping the shark' and this was the premiere episode.
