Is Stargate SG-1 any good?

I have a feeling your definition of “arc-driven” is far too loose, and I stand by my statement, which also included the words continuing story arc as a central theme.
While not for everyone (again what show is
) if someone is into sci-fi it is certainly worth checking out.

I have to admit. They made an excellent character in Jonas.

To me, Stargate SG1 is the closest series in terms of style and tone to the original Star Trek of just about any other sci-fi series since.
It's got elements of hard science fiction, but the show is really more of an adventure series with a good sense of humor and fun.
Personally I like it a lot more than the movie. I love the cast, and the writing is just right considering what they are aiming to do.
At $35 I'd say it's a good blind buy (especially considering how much you get for that price). At $50 it probably wouldn't be, though. At that price I'd recommend catching it on TV first.

to what B5Erik said. That being said you can get season 1 for just over $25 through amazon.ca. WELL worth a blind buy for that price. Think about it, you get 24 episodes (one of which is 90 minutes long) all for just over the price of a new release movie like Kill Bill. $20 for a 2 hour movie or $25 for 17.5 hours of great tv?

Im a big sci fi and cult TV fan and like all the shows you listed, and like you I DONT like Trek, (except the Original series)
and I have to say SG-1 is one of my favorite shows. It doesn't have as much of a "story arc" as Buffy does, but it has a bit of an arc... if that matters to you. I like how they go into the Stargate and they never know where they are going to end up. The writting is fun and creative (almost, but not quite as good as Buffy as far as the writting and charaters go) It also doesn't take itself too seriously. It took a few episodes to get started, but by the end of Season 1 I was hooked... now Ive seen Season 3 on DVD and am looking forward to Season 4 when I find some extra money (where did you see them for $35 each by the way?)
Buy Season 1, see how you like it... I bet you will be hooked. if not, sell it on ebay. also, the Season 1 disks can be bought individualy at Best Buy for $9.99 each

the used price for season 2 is $32US at amazon.com
using amazon.ca is sounding like a plan. I see on their site that there would be no taxes, but there might be custom fees. Have you ordered from there before, and were there any custom fees?
assuming you're in the US

No custom fees. I've used them a handful of times. No problems.

I haven’t used Amazon.ca, but I’ve ordered from Canada before. No problems with the orders, as such. But I had floaters in B5 sets twice. Doing the exchange was a pain (no fault of the distribs).
BTW, Amazon.com isn’t charging state taxes (California). At 8%, distribs who do don’t make the price cut for me.
The only negative I can see about ordering from Canada, outside of maybe taking a little longer, is some of the titles have covers in both English and French. I know it’s silly, but it bugs me.

I've ordered about 1/2 of the seasons from Amazon.ca and they are the same ones as you would get from Amazon.com (aka no dual language covers). If you look for the ASIN and make sure it matches the amazon.com one you should be ok (atleast it hasn't failed me yet
).

sweet. once again dvdtalk comes through. I may start making a lot of my amazon purchases through .ca. Although not getting the supersaver shipping will kind of suck, if I buy a lot at once so that the higher per shipment fee only gets charged once I think I can save a lot of cash. Will my amazon visa gcs work there?

^^ that is what I thought too. But like any site the best deals are mixed. Not all box sets are going to be that cheap, but you will find some good deals.

nemein, great tip. Thanks!
I think it depends on if the studio produces discs there. By law, they have to have bilingual labeling. Paramount's one. Some of my Star Trek movies got this half-Frenchie label, and some don’t. Mon dieu!
