I felt the same way as well. It started off great. but i thought Mel was to over the top and that kinda ruined it for me.

Kyle's nightmare was quite amazing in terms of it's animation style - the quick shot of Alan Alda was a hoot.

Red Dog 04-01-04 08:08 AM

I noticed the Alan Alda shot too.

I'll go with a lot of the sentiment - 1st half of the episode was fantastic - very very funny. 2nd half was not as funny. Just when you think Cartman can't go any further, he does.

Only a couple funny moments, but overall, just not a good episode.

More often than not, I just wasn't laughing at the parts where they just went over the top with Gibson. Just went straight downhill and never recovered.

Agreed with the rest of you. This episode started out funny and then fell apart when they went to visit Mel. Then it picked up just a bit with Cartman and Kyle at his synagogue, but then fell apart again. Way too obvious and preachy and just not funny. It's a shame too, since I think we were all looking forward to this episode.

Alan Alda

I thought the entire episode was hilarious.

At least 10 times I thought to myself: "Can they really get away with that?" It seems like they have a little problem with Mel.

I definitely share their viewpoint on "The Passion" and the media circus that came with it.

"Mel Gibson if *****in crazy dude."

MrBob 04-01-04 10:19 AM

I need to watch this episode again, I was so drunk watching it, just trying to remember what I saw is making me sick.

crow3000 04-01-04 11:18 AM

i didn't like the episode to much, there were a few good parts, cartman walking away from the phone had me laughing, it was clever i will give them that, just not funny. it seems they just wanted shock value but this is south park so i wasn't really shocked

TheMadMonk 04-01-04 11:35 AM

My favorite part was the Baseketball line.

BlackCapTen 04-01-04 11:46 AM

Funny epsiode, I wish they took it further! I enjoyed the Mel Gibson stuff, a peak inside insanity. Also, I loved BASEketball!

SleepyW 04-01-04 01:54 PM

Damn...I'm mad now. I watched that episode mildly amused (as others, got bored when they got to mel's house), yet I missed the funniest line of the whole show (the BASEketball line).

FuzzyBallz 04-01-04 05:24 PM

Man, I wish I know german. Funny episode again. Gonna rewatch it tonight.

Deftones 04-01-04 10:36 PM

Did anyone see the quick flash of Alan Alda in Stan's dream?

Looks like you missed all the previous posts that said yes. Maybe they'll flash Woody Allen flashing under age asian girls next time.

"It's okay Kyle. It's okay. Just...say that first part again?"
"You...you were right?"
"Mmmm...one more time Kyle..."
"You were right."

"I don't care. You sound like a little bitch to me."
"Bitch, don't call me bitch! I'll pop your ****ing head open."
"Yeah? You wanna bring it you little *****?"
"I already brought it, bitch! I brought it, set it down on the table, and opened it, bitch!"
"Wait a minute...Cartman?"
"..."

 I can't believe what they can get away with on public TV. I'm fairly liberal, but holy shit...

Groucho 04-02-04 07:34 AM

Comedy Central is public TV?

"I'm Charlie Rose, bitch!"

No.

Now say you're sorry. Mel will forgive you.

;)

thecrazydude 04-02-04 01:22 PM

fantastic episode

MrN 04-02-04 01:45 PM

I thought it was a great episode. Yes, Mel Gibson was over the top, but in character - he seems to be tortured in quite a few of his movies. I was actually surprised they held back by not bringing Gibson's dad into the plot.

The Stan criticism of 'Passion' was right on - and of course Kyle and Cartman taking the extreme views. And the priest (acting normal for a change) kept a good balance.

I'd put this right up there with the Mormon episode.

Bust 04-02-04 07:08 PM

I kept wondering when they were going to bring Jesus in to this episode. I mean, he lives in South Park and does his TV show, "Jesus and Friends" there.

That got me thinking, Jesus died in Episode 617 "Red Sleigh Down" while saving Santa Clause from the Iraqis. Has he been seen on the show since then, or was that a permanent death? Let's not forget, Kenny was permanently dead too, until that very episode when he showed up at the end, out of nowhere.

I would have loved to hear Jesus' take (South Park style) on the whole "Passion" controversy.

Comedy Central is a cable network, not on the public airways. They don't have to beep out anything, but they do since it's included in most basic cable subscriptions and would piss off advertisers.
