The other thing I don't understand is they spend all this money to fix up the exterior of these 10-20 year old cars and yet do nothing to the engine. The car will probably break down in 6 months.

Hey it's all for the show. Investing all that time and money on the engine does nothing for the show since the results won't really be visual. They do what is necessary for a good 'pay off' on camera and that's about it.

I have a feeling they(MTV/West Coast) could care less if the car breaks down in a week or two after the show.

Or - it's possible they do give it a tune up and change all the rubber parts, but don't show us all that during the 20 minutes worth of show.

Does anyone know how they go about choosing which rides to pimp? Do people submit videos or something? Or do they send out interns looking for hoopty rides?

man, i should buy a piece of crap ride for cheap and get on the show. then sell it for profit.

It's a real shame I'm too old to be on Mtv - I would've loved if they had this show 6 or 7 years ago when I had my 1980 Volvo 240DL Wagon - they woulda pimped that out like whoa. Or did I already say that? :hscratch:

I just caught the Tanjello pickup truck - one of the best ones yet... how is he gonna deliver parts now though? They didn't leave him any room for that stuff.

What I wonder is does MTV give the cars alarm systems, too? Those cars would seem to be really big targets for car theft now especially with the bright colors and shiny rims.

I'm surprised this show is becoming part of the sunday stew. It doesn't really seem to fit in with the other shows in that line-up.

I think almost every car has had an alarm system of some sort installed on it. If you've been watching the show, you would have seen the alarms mentioned on several of the episodes. In one episode, they installed an alarm on one car that had a pre-recorded voice warning by X.

And in the most recent episode where they redid the Ford Ranger, they installed an alarm system that controlled the remote door openers (because they removed the outer door handles).

I think this show is awesome. It would be sweet to have my car "pimped." I'm sure they could do something with an 89 Pontiac LeMans :lol: Too bad they don't have a Kansas edition of this show. Of course they would probably call it "Hick My Ride" and would raise the wheels, put fat tires on, take off the mufflers and use open headers. Every car has a different look by the end of this show and it's cool. I like how they aren't just making "Fast and Furious" cars. With that being said, I will have to pimp out my Civic after I get it ;)

Yeah, I know it's old, but I've never done it before so I had to take my shot. :) It's all in fun. I've got an Xbox, just so ya know, and I think it kicks ass.

Pimp My Ride is addictive....since the 1st episode it's the only TV show I watch regularly...

Can't say I would want those cars but they are definitely better off....If I had to chose I would rather have the friggin' money but that would make for a boring show....

As for no Xbox being installed in the pimped rides...well, I have an Xbox and that damn thing is huge...to install it in a pimped ride you would need to eliminate the entire backseat....hehehe

FYI, they installed an Xbox in the Chevy Luv on tonights show.

I was looking forward to the episode all weekend, since my first car was a Chevy Luv of an indeterminate year. I couldn't even fathom what they could do to make that car cool, and it ended up being one of the better jobs they've done.

it was a nice job. i'm not a big fan of the body-style of the truck myself, but what they did with the back cover/tent was pretty cool.

I like the "camper shell" they did on that '74 Chevy with the rising tounneau cover. Very cool. Although with the woofers and amps on either side of the truck bed, it looked a little snug back there for two people to sleep... :p

also - that big dump truck pic as a candidate for having an xbox installed isn't really that funny since the truck they put an xbox in was one of the smallest vehicles they've had on the show.

Oh - and on OverHauled - they did an El Camino for this kid who had a good reaction finally... only caught the end of the show, but it was the first time it was interesting.

I know the guy who owns and runs West Coast Customs (we have some 'history' together). He's a little creep and he used to have his shop in Mission Viejo. When he did have his shop in MV, and I spent A LOT of time there, I saw the kind of work they did on their cars. And almost every time, it was a half-assed job and they were always looking for 'shortcuts' and the jobs would take twice as long as he would quote people. He's just plain devious.

He moved up to LA a couple years back and started a new shop up there that has apparently taken off quite well. While in MV, he somehow got connected with Warren G and a couple other rap people. That, in turn, hooked him up with Shaq and Shaq became a huge promoter for them. I'm sure eventually, his connections hooked him up with MTV. I believe he does it solely for the exposure that it brings to his shop. And I'm sure that there's a TON of editing done on the show as to not show how they're really screwing up people's cars.

he still does things half-assed... end result still looks nice on tv though. The last one, with the truck, they modified a honda hood scoop to fit by using bondo as spackle.

I'm from M.V. and actually live in the same development as Warren G. His rides are pretty nice and there are a lot of nice others in southern OC.

Anyways, a friend of a friend of mine was on the show last night...Ezra or something. Here is the real truth: MTV lies about the whole thing.

1) He barely DJs
2) He doesn't live in L.A.
3) Those 'friends' they showed at the end ooing and aaahhhing at his car are fake. He never knew 'em, it was all BS.
4) His car runs like CRAP now. They do nothing to the engine, obviously.
5) It looks much better on TV. The apolstry inside is crap, paint is chipping off and pretty much some of the car is going to crap already.

Funny stuff...there was a lot of other stuff to that was way fake.

I think this show does a 1,000,000,000 times better job on the cars than PMR ever will , but then again you have some of the TOP GUNS of custom cars doing the work. But the show itself needs to be overhauled.
First they need to actually detail the finished product. The show is an hour, use some of that time wisely and show us what was done in detail, they hardly ever show the interior and never the electronics portion.
Second, stop using people that can do the work themselves, this is why PMR is better, these kids can not do this themselves. I just saw the episode where they had that twit from BH90210 on it. He has some money, he can afford to have his car completed by Chip Foose.
Third, stop showing us every second of the big "deception". We get it, get to what anyone cares about, the car.
Fourth get some better hosts, maybe some actual car people, like perhaps Chris Titus (who showed up on the first episode).

That is all I have for now. Hopefully TLC will tweak this show and get it to be the winner it is.

They did a nice job on an old 70's FJ40 Landcruiser in the last episode I saw. Put in a nice bamboo wood floor in the back. And even though the girl that owns it will never take it off-road, they still put big-ass knobby tires on it and installed a snorkle air intake for the engine.

Apparently in the next episode they find a kid that's driving around a Ford Escort made up of two halves of different Escorts welded together... Yikes.

The preview also pretty much gave away the ending:


I'd also like to know how some of the earlier cars they pimped at the beginning of the season are holding up. :p

I thought it was funny that they put a snorkle on the FJ40 for deep water off-roading, but at the same time, put a big monitor in the floor in the back floor.

I dig this show a lot. I've attempted to watch Overhauled, but it's soooo slow, and the payoff at the end isn't worth the time. Of the two I've seen, both are like "Oh. Well. I'll be." I think it's a bad idea to trick people because their reaction is confusion rather than excitement over their new wheels. I like PMR's formate much better, mainly because it's fast and interesting. Plus, X to the Z Exzibit is a hoot.

I agree with the pace, but OH does a much better job on the cars, although you would never know it as they do not show much of the finished product.
