So, are Janice and Bobby Bacala now married? Janice mentioned losing her wedding ring and Bobby and his kids seemed pretty comfortable in "her house" for Sunday dinner. Yet, no time seemed to really pass for the other characters. Tony and Carmela seem to be seperated, but not divorced, Furio is still being discussed...

I agree. Looking back it seems odd that they would just throw out that line and not have it lead anywhere. Which really makes me wonder.
At that point in the episode, I assumed a similar amount of time had passed for them as well as us. Janice & Bobby were now married and this was the writer's way of introducing us to changes in the character's lives. ie the news story filling us in on the 2 new family members and updating us on the NY family.
But, as the episode progressed, it seemed as if time had stood still for Christopher & Adriana, Tony & Carmela...
Maybe next week's show will shed some light.

Awesome premiere. Did NOT disappoint at all... Looks like this season is going to have a good balance of family and mob violence plot lines (which is good news after the family heavy 4th season). I can't wait for Buscemi either, and Robert Loggia is the man....

Janice does have a son (Harpo -- we've never seen him), but I don't recall offhand whether it's been established whether Janice married Harpo's father.
Personally, it wouldn't surprise me if Janice and Bobby are married.

The wedding ring comment was the writers' way of telling the viewer that Bobby and Janice have indeed gotten married since we saw them last.
I guess all it take is the ruthless murder of a waiter to make Chris and Paulie realize how much they mean to each other.
You just know it's going to blow up again sometime this season.

I had the same exact thought. No way was that her ass. Now the jugs on the other hand, those looked like they could have been hers.
And I love Valentina.

Mommy! Help! Mommy!
I was so disappointed Tony wasn't there to see that.
It was awfully nice of that waiter to intervene so Christopher and Paulie could patch things up.
I sure hope Melfy has recurring dreams. I'm voting that was really her and don't try to convince me otherwise. I always thought she looked good in those skirts.
I also think Bobby and Janice are married. Since they never followed up with anyone finding it, there wouldn't be any other reason to even put that line in. She's nuts and he was vulnerable, I'm sure they'll be very happy together.

I thought it was a solid episode, and the wedding ring reference and the canned clam chowder for dinner were enough to recognize that they were married and that he'd been duped.
Looking foward to the conflicts between the old and current mafia peoples.

A.J. getting all that stuff, $5,000 drum set, because Tony is guilty. My father was divorced 5 times and I got nothing but a new mom.
Very good episode, not a lot happens, yet it feels like a lot happens and it's completely satisfying. Brilliant writing and acting. Can't wait till next week.

Great, slow build to start the season. Can't wait to watch it all develop. Loved the way they broke AJ down. First they show him trying to act all defiant and in control with him mother, and moments later, he's a wimpering puss begging for him mommy. Excellent start, March ... keep it up.

The second weakest opener next to Season 3's, but still very enjoyable overall. The episode was kind of all over the place, in my opinion. I believe that they tried to pack as much stuff into the episode to get everyone reacquainted with the characters and what's going on in their lives. Things should settle down and begin to feel more Soprano-like next episode. Also, I may be the only onew that feels this way, but I hate that they mentioned what happened in Pine Barrens. It was better wondered about, than addressed...

"Two Tony's"
Directed by: Tim Van Patten
Written by: David Chase and Terence Winter
Synopsis
"Forget the way Tony Soprano makes his way in the world. That's to feed his children. There's two Tony Sopranos...you've never seen that other one...That's the one I want to show you."
As the fifth season opens, Carmela finds that in addition to Tony's resentment about the breakup, she's bearing the brunt of A.J.'s as well. She accuses Tony of withholding money from her while buying things for A.J. - like a five thousand dollar drum set - to relieve his own guilt. For Tony's part, despite his anger that "my wife was going after some ****ing immigrant," he worries about Carmela and A.J. being alone. When he hears that a bear has been foraging in the backyard, Tony has Benny Fazio and Little Paulie Germani take turns guarding the house with an AK-47.
Although Tony may be losing one part of his family, he's gaining others. He has a brand-new brother-in-law in Bobby Bacala, now wed to Janice, and his cousin Tony Blundetto, a wise guy incarcerated in the 1980's, is soon to be released. "I've missed the shit out of him," a delighted Tony tells Bobby. In addition, old-timers Angelo Garepe, Phil Leotardo and Feech La Manna have been freed after serving long terms. Feech, a feared capo in his day, immediately seeks Tony's permission to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, and Tony gladly gives him the go ahead.
Elsewhere within Tony's professional sphere, however, things are not so harmonious. When Carmine, Sr. suffers a massive stroke, Johnny Sack reveals that he's still bitter about Tony's refusal to hit the old don. "You want an apology?" an exasperated Tony demands, "****in' Whitman's Sampler?" Old hostilities flare up between Paulie and Christopher as well, finally erupting over a $1,184 restaurant tab that Paulie sticks him with after Christopher did not want to pay the last dinner bill. Their heated confrontation in the eatery's parking lot culminates in them murdering their waiter, who interrupts to complain about the tip. (Afterwards the two agree to put their differences aside. "One of us coulda got hurt," Paulie says.)
And Tony decides it's time to put aside his differences with Dr. Melfi, but not because he wants to go back to therapy. He tells her that he wants to take their relationship "in that other direction." But Dr. Melfi flatly refuses. In addition to her professional ethics - and despite admitting to her own therapist that she once found Tony "a little sexy" - she is repelled by the things he does. "In a personal relationship," she tells Tony, "I don't think I could sit silent." Hurt and furious, Tony storms out of her office and ends up at Carmela's, where he sits in the backyard, AK in his lap, loaded for bear.
