‘sup with the Dish ads DURING programs?!?

A crawl (LARGE) like a weather warning on Spike (during TNG). And a banner with a crawl during Jag on CBS.

Talking about how Dish/Echostar is losing some channels or some such nonsense. I didn’t get it all because, on Spike, I figured it was just something their brainless suits came up with. But on CBS? And during the friggin’ program??? (I don’t remember much from that one: I was too busy having a seizure.)

If you didn’t see it, maybe it was a DirecTV thing, although that doesn’t make any sense to me.

WTF, over?

Pac-Rat 03-06-04 12:23 AM

The whole CBS/MTV family is doing it. Likely to get viewers to pressure DISH to accept the rate increase/new contract. A month ago DISH warned of a possible channel loss.
DISH now puts a black bar to censor the crawl (or at least when they catch it), or they give the channel "the blink".

Story about the battle:

Wizdar 03-06-04 12:49 AM

"The blink"? :hscratch:

So Spike is a Viacom?

Well, I don't often use this word around here, but this is bullshit.

Living in SoCal all my life, I'm not used to weather crawls messing with programs, although they recently did some because it was going to rain (no, really!) So, I'm pretty much crap-your-pants mad.

Most of my programs are coming from Discover, Bravo, and Travel these days, if not DVDs.

Networks can bite me.

ClarkKentKY 03-06-04 01:20 AM

You'd figure they'd have some way of targeting their feed to that specific dish network, and leave the other 95% of us alone. Nope.

Pac-Rat 03-06-04 01:24 AM

"the blink"- That's what I call the signal loss where the picture alternates every second between a black screen and a stable picture. I don't think it was a coincidence that it happened when the crawl came up during Beavis and Butt-head, yet all the other channels were fine.
yeah, spike is in the family, along with some 15 others and then all their offshoots (Showtime Beyond, VH-1 Classics, ect.).

mikehunt 03-06-04 01:27 AM

as soon as I saw the title I was thinking "he watched TNG tonight"
I don't think I caught the one during JAG
funny thing about JAG, a couple days ago on USA they had the one where Harm pushes the plane with his canopy against their tailhook and I was thinking "it's cool that on this episode and the one with the C130 they had a historical precedent"
and then tonight was the C130 on a carrier

It that what the crawl actually reads?

joltaddict 03-06-04 07:17 PM

Spike did this during the Shield last night too.

freedexter 03-06-04 07:50 PM

Comedy Central is doing that too, even though I'm a cable customer.

The crawl is reading that over and over again, every 15 minutes or so.

Ive got DirecTV.

Scott27 03-06-04 10:23 PM

I saw that crawl on Comedy Central this morning while working at my internship...at a 24-hour news station owned by Time Warner Cable. Go figure.

Rypro 525 03-06-04 10:43 PM

god i hate that, was watching mtv (yes for videos) and that crawl really pissed me off. why should i have to suffer with that when i don't even have dish network.

johnglass 03-06-04 11:15 PM

I saw the crawl, except for the "switch to DirecTV" part. Did they just add that?

Just saw the black bar on an episode of Insomniac. I have Dish Network, and they did the black bar thing the first time, but missed part of it the second. I had no idea this was going on.

Chew 03-08-04 06:03 AM

I have DirecTV and saw it on Ebert last night (which is played on my CBS channel). It looked like it was directly from the affiliate though and not something Dish produced.

Draven 03-08-04 10:25 AM

I love seeing major companies behave like 5 year olds.

bboisvert 03-08-04 10:27 AM

Got it on CBS last night during 60 Minutes. And, as Chew said, it looked like something directly from the affiliate.
