in hd on abc i'm seeing a bunch of greenish lines slashing through the image.

story starting out a little slow but i expect it to pick up.

i never saw the lars von trier version.
who was given credit in the beginning, as this being based on that work.

ravan 03-03-04 09:15 PM

I kinda stayed where I was.. Didnt hate it, didnt love it. Perhaps it will pick up.

Not saying they are not aknowledning the source material in the credits, but come on.. 'Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital' all over the title.. Kinda hints that its 'his thing' in my book :)

Highly recommend people to check out The Kingdom by the way - its great once you stop having a headache over the funky handheld camera and weird color video.

Goldberg74 03-03-04 09:38 PM

Dr. Massengill!?

(Bruce Davidson's ride into work made me think he was going to be a patient.)

Michael Corvin 03-03-04 09:44 PM

Missed it, my college team was on had to watch that. Any chance of a repeat airing?

DocBrass 03-03-04 10:27 PM

earthquakes in Maine??

A little slow for me. was this a typical King story/pacing? what's the deal with the aardvark? was some of this suppose to be scary???

I was wondering if this was based on the original Kingdom series. I read a few articles about King, his wreck and the Kingdom series. I'm glad he is giving some credit. I remember trying to watch one episode on IFC (?) a few years go. are these on DVD yet?

Sunday Morning 03-03-04 10:31 PM

I liked it.

Although it kinda fizzled towards the very end. I was kinda annoyed by the repeating of events after the accident. Seemed a bit redudant. I suppose it was keeping in line for the reality of the character. Some of the scenes did seem to say the same thing over and over, but I suppose that is the nature of television.

Didn't care for the opening title sequence. It was waaaay derivative of six feet under's titles.

The whole bruce davison parking the car bit was pretty great. It was tense & funny and totally stephen king.

Looks like there is potential for some interesting characters and diabolical situations. I'm game.

ravan 03-03-04 10:33 PM

The Kingdom is on dvd yes.

I'm giving it a few weeks at least, so we'll see ;)

mookiemeister 03-03-04 10:41 PM

I tuned in 2nd hour of this show (was watching Angel first hour). Not too bad but didn't follow everything. Will continue to tune in and go from there.

Anyone watching this.

Being from Denmark and a big fan of The Kingdom (Which is from Denmark) I'm kinda watching with a fearful eye.

I usually like King but was surprised to see that he 'sold out' and rebranded someone elses work as his own.. Ok strong words, he can mold it in his own direction of course, but a lot of elements are close so far (and seem off to me, having seen the original).

Anyway, no strong feelings for or against yet.

I am familiar with The Kingdom and I also was surprised to see King repackage this as his own with radio spots stating How it's a story close to him because he lived it after his car accident (more like walking accident)

I watch with a fearful eye and I hope folks don't see this as the way it was were as the kingdom was more then this seems to be packaged to be.

Groucho 03-03-04 11:14 PM

I'm not too impressed, but I'll give it another shot. They're going to have to do better than giant aardvarks and little girls though.

Thrush 03-04-04 12:05 AM

Creepy little girl- Check
Psychic old lady - Check
Spaz - Check
Obnoxious authority figure (with optional brown noser)- Check
"Mentaly challenged" who possess insight into the unknown - Check

Yep its Stephen King all right.

Yep its Stephen King all right.
all ripped off from another better source.

ClarkKentKY 03-04-04 01:09 AM

What happened before the Jogger got hit bt the car? Like MichealCorvin, I was watching the UK game. My VCR started late cause of Smallville, and i think i may have missed the first 5-10 minutes (no doubt containing an explanation of why there is an earthquake and why I can hear a giant ant eater talk.)

It better wow me over the next episode.

Jackskeleton 03-04-04 01:35 AM

hmmm before he got hit..

They just explained that the hospital was built on the grounds of what used to be an old factory that made cival war cloths. it burned and not all the childern got out before the fire killed them.

My HD connection was top notch!!! Enjoyed the show for the most part....about as much as you can for a viewing which is not complete due to the story playing out in future episodes. Will definitely give the show a chance. :)

Good to see Andrew Mccarthy back in action.....what else has he been doing lately?

Groucho 03-04-04 07:13 AM

I wouldn't call this a "rip off" considering full credit was given to the original source, and Lans Van Trier even got a token "Executive Producer" tag.

kramdenfan 03-04-04 08:17 AM

I enjoyed it, and am looking forward to the rest of the series.

EXCEPT- I absolutely, positively HATE the way ABC airs it's mini-series. Why is it that before every commercial break there needs to be "preview scenes" of what's coming? I can understand doing the teaser before the show, and previews after, and previews during the week to try to grab viewers.... But DURING the show? That's just annoying.

Sorry for the rant. That's all I have to say about that.

Goldberg74 03-04-04 08:25 AM

According to TV Guide, its a 13-part miniseries.

The only reason I watched it last night is because L&O was a knock-off (read: stripped from the headlines) ep about that millionaire that cut up his neighbor... that didn't appeal to me.

Last night was ok. I like the way Hook (McCarthy) defied the lead doc (Davison)... that's gonna be trouble.

I understand why the little girl was there, but not the vampire dude and the ardvark (albeit I thought it was a good model and character).

I'll give it another shot next week.

Rypro 525 03-04-04 09:00 AM

f*** missed it, anyone know if abc is gonna re air this?

cheapskate 03-04-04 09:19 AM

I watched the first hour and a half... then lost interest. I don't think there was enough there to keep you watching for two hours in a row; why did they feel the need to show two episodes back to back?

If they'd kept it at an hour, they probably would have lured me in for another week.

For those asking about the ant eater, there was a quick look at the artist's latest painting as his wife left the house... a large, snarling ant eater. If that helps... ;)

And, according to an interview w/King I read this weekend, ABC is leaving the door open for this to be a regular show in the fall. (Although King's involvement at that point would be minimal.)

I read a couple of mediocre reviews of this and decided that I'm too busy to invest 13 TV hours. Let me know if it picks up and I'll grab the inevitable DVD release. ;)

javanut 03-04-04 10:34 AM

According to Zap2it, Kingdom Hospital won its 9 pm timeslot, which is a big coup for ABC, and then slipped a little to 2nd place at 10 pm.

I liked it. Andrew McCarthy I loved, which was completely unexpected.

The Downs Syndrome kids are WAY crazy.

I haven't seen the original, but I thought this was great, especially for network tV.

renaldow 03-04-04 11:27 AM

I'm a big fan of the original, so I watched this with some trepidation. I was pleasantly surprised by it. Yeah, there were some Kingisms throughout it, which are fairly easy to spot. But over all I was impressed with how faithful it was to the original. After seeing ABC plaster 'Stephen King's...' all over the place I was also glad to see the credits acknowledge it was adapted for the US and that Von Trier got an Executive Producer credit. It didn't surprise me that ABC had King's name all over it, that's what they do. I can't hold marketing against the material.

We'll see how it pans out over the next few weeks, there may be enough that happens to make me want to delete anything admitting I liked it. I do hope they bring in some of the side storylines from the original, like the racing ambulance drivers and the doctor that transplants the tumor into himself so he can grow it.

Will we see Dr. Stegman shouting 'Maine Scum!' from the roof of the hospital? One can only hope.

ClarkKentKY 03-04-04 11:43 AM

I have no idea if you're serious, but you might want to spoilerize that renaldow. :(

ravan 03-04-04 12:05 PM

He's serious.
